Like the car it came out of, I think this will be another tough one. This Philco automobile radio D3AA was never built for easy repair. This one suffers from volume fading after 5-10 minutes. I'm hoping to separate the major parts and still be able to operate the radio for troubleshooting. First trouble to shoot is how to take it apart. Looks like I won't find a schematic easily either. Oh boy.

I like these older video's more than the recent ones.

As mentioned by others the sliding thing at the bottom is stereo balance. You set the tunning presets by pulling out the buttons, that's why they have an indent in the bottom. You then tune to the station you want to set and once there push the button fully in. BTW I would recommend that you edit down your videos to a more digestable size. Take Care.

That control was not too much of a mystery to me. On editing my videos, I can't afford the time to do that so I am focused on improving the live result. Maybe someday I'll go back through my videos and edit out short versions. For now, I've got more stuff to fix. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Jim.

Jim Lindenas Understandable. I hope my comment doesn't come off as rude. Just a bit of constructive criticism.

FelixTheHouseFreak I took no offense whatsoever. I appreciate that you took the time to comment and hope you'll comment more on my videos. Jim.

That old Philco am fm radio is an exact match to the one in my 1972 Lincoln continental MARK IV. The one in my car has lincoln/thunderbird printed across the top.

Hi Jim. I had two transistor radios, that had the same problem. I checked and checked and it turned out to be a bad antenna, of all things. Replacing the antenna fixed the fading. Why the did this I have no ideal. One reason many people want to have them repaired is to keep the car has close to original, has possible. It's a car restorer thing. I am that way about my Mustang. :)

That's not the best news for me. If the radio is good, I'll find that out with my shop antenna then return the radio and it will exhibit the fading with the old antenna on the car connected. Phooey on that.

Jim Lindenas Ah the joys of vintage radio repair. Now if it fades with your antenna. Then the fun begins.

I've been thinking about how the antenna could lead to fading and here's my crazy idea. Perhaps there was enough corrosion between the antenna ground point and the car body that there was no longer a metallic connecting path. Instead an electrolytic cell would exist there assuming the steel car body and the metal of the antenna were different metals. With some moisture in the rusty area, the cell would produce a small DC voltage of maybe .2 or .4 volts. If there was some zinc involved, the voltage might be closer to 1V. This voltage is then impressed on the radio circuitry causing the fade. Maybe a front end transistor's bias would be thrown off. How's that for imagination. I have no idea if such a hypothesis would prove in anyway true. Oh, it's fun to dream. The truth is probably much more mundane.

If the antenna coax (especially noticeable on FM is not grounded properly on both ends, the FM stations can drift out and appear weak. The coax will act as an antenna itself and could possibly be out of phase with the car antenna signal cancelling out some of the signal strength. I learned this from experience myself during the days of 8-tracks and plug in FM multiplexers that had external antenna outputs. Start with simple stuff.

I believe the silver slider is for the stereo balance. I think I heard a slight click when you put it in the middle. I believe the way you get the buttons to remember a new position on the radio is to pull the black buttons out a half inch and then push them all the way in. I once had a 1968 Fastback Mustang. However, I never used the stereo it came with. The car was in average condition and I had to replace almost every part on the car. I eventually used a Dremel tool to cut 6x9" holes in the sides of the rear deck to install Sony speakers. I installed a newer type cassette radio with an electronic readout and 6 push buttons. These older cars used the "shaft" type radios, named for the left and right adjustment shafts in the front. These older type shaft radios I think are now very hard to find with electronic readouts. I haven't really looked though. You might be able to buy a schematic diagram from a Mustang parts dealer. I sold my Mustang in 2005. Because fewer people own the original Mustangs, all 4 of the parts dealers where I lived went out of business or moved away.

I think a lot of local dealers of used things like car parts are being replaced by internet based businesses that are accumulating large stocks of old stuff. Car themselves are too large and need to be local. Just about everything else can be moved by mail. Change is good - just not for everyone during the change. If I felt an alignment was in order, I might pursue the schematic at a cost but that doesn't seem necessary.

Jim Lindenas I bought my 1968 Fastback Mustang in 1986 and I kept it until Dec 2005. It was my daily driver. When I first bought it, there were 4 general auto parts stores and 4 specialized Mustang parts stores near me. The 4 general auto parts stores were Chief Auto Parts, Trak Auto Parts, Kragen Auto Parts and Pep Boys. Every single one carried parts for my '68 Mustang. Most of these stores had very generous parts warranties, either 5 or 7 year or lifetime warranties. I could just go and get any part I wanted. Because my Mustang was so easy to work on, I did nearly all the work myself. My Mustang cost virtually nothing to maintain once I got everything running. I even bought performance parts from the Super Shops chain. If I had wanted to, I even could have bought a rebuilt steering gear box. Out of the 8 parts stores, all except Pep Boys have gone out of business, including Super Shops. It is now difficult to find new or rebuilt parts for classic cars. What you can find will not have longer than a 1 year warranty. With today's cars, you practically need an automotive degree to work on them. They are very expensive to maintain.

I feel a little dumb commenting with all these "smarter/older" people, well I am only 13, but, anyway, I watched the 160-in-one electronic project kit AM Radio, and I was going to comment that I had my old dad's kit, but the comments were disabled. (my 160-in-one kit has not been touched in a long time, and it is in really good condition.) Anyway, I was wondering what the Probes are in that kit, were. Also I watch your videos in my free time, ALL the time, and I really enjoy watching someone with the same interests as me. When I grow up, I want to be a Robotic Engineer. Great, now I really do sound young. :)

This is not originally from a 1968 Mustang. The D3AA prefix identifies that it was originally engineered for the 1973 Ford Full Size models, although it could be used in other models.

You may have to tune the radio to a point to get the mechanism to release the face and the top go forward off the control shafts I think

Do you think Robert is right. It's crazy to try to fix this radio when you can buy them working off Ebay so cheaply.

Well It is a very good point If you can find a working radio for 30.00 + about 15.00 shipped I don't think that a bad deal. Test it well before installing Car radios have a lot of down sides to being repaired " Cost, parts. INFO, Compact size, tape decks " all downers Now Some old car radios are over the $150.00 mark for asis stuff I sometimes fix car radios "KEY word SOMETIMES" I have a long list to check off before I will touch one. Now If you trying to learn something... well that is a new can of worms

I have a 1967 Ford Mustang AM radio. It powers up but I am getting squeals and oscillation sounds across the dial with the exception of 1 local AM station and its not strong. I am using about 6 feet of wire for an antenna. If I connect a longer outside antenna it kills the reception as though it might be overloaded. Just getting squeals and oscillation sounds. I can't find the schematic for the radio. Its AM only and I believe its the original from a car my brother just purchased and was told the radio did not work. Any tips would be appreciated

FYI D3AA means this was from a 1973 Ford.

It might be cheaper in the long run just to buy one off of E bay working for 30.00!
