the way the moon beggins so suddenly in the glow pt.2 always reminded me of how suddenly beach life in death also starts. like you know the vocals and instrumental kick in at the exact same time. also the song afterglow from nervous young man kinda seems like it could be takjng inspiration from phils album. so i guess im trying to say i always felt tjere was a connection between the two artists and this cover is cool to see
I drove up to the city at night And found the place where you grew up And then where you stayed And then we walked around And stayed up late Under city lights And I spent the night Next to you in the house where you grew up Next to you I miraculously woke up In your parents' house I lied in bed with you I went out to feel alone there I went back to wipe it clean I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams We went all the way up to the small town where I'm from With foggy air And the wind And the mountain top And we clung to rocks And we looked off. You held my hand You almost got to start feeling me I finally felt like I was breathing free And under swaying trees we fell asleep and had the same dream The stars were bright We dream the same every night On my island home I spent some time with you I went back to feel alone there I went back there by myself And gave up on everything that we'd felt We found a precious place in the sand Right out in the wind And lied under a blanket And heard the furious sound The roar of waves The pounding surf Two bodies on the earth It was intense just getting to be there next to you And you were trying to get me then And I was happy to let you in I went back and wished I hadn't I went back and felt regret I went to the beach and I stared west Every night when the sun went down In the town where we live The empty streets were lit up By reflected light From a distant sun Bouncing off a glowing ball of rock We just lied on the roof and watched The moon The moon! The blue light of the moon! We didn't talk and silently we both felt powerful Like the moon my chest was full Because we both knew we're just floating in the same space over molten rock And we felt safe and discovered that our skin is soft There's nothing left except certain death And that was comforting under the moon I went out last night to forget that I went out and stared it down But the moon just stared back at me And in its light I saw my two feet on the ground That was The Moon by Mr. Microphone 🧍♂️
this cover does a really good job highlighting how unique Phil's lyrics are. Like, even though I could see Will writing a song with a similar subject matter, lines like "we felt safe and discovered that our skin is soft" has such a bizarre, earnest, and distinctly Phil Elverum-y cadence to it that it'd be hard to mistake this for an original CSH song. Obv not a slight on Will, who's a brilliant lyricist in his own right, just an interest observation.
There is an acoustic version sung by Phil Elverum in the microphones album song islands if you want to actually hear the lyrics from the original artist
One of my favorite songs off the album. The whole thing is a masterpiece, so I've anyone here hasn't listened to the thing all the way through yet, I'd recommend it.
I love the original version of this song, and Phil's later stripped down acoustic version that he did under the Mount Eerie name, but I feel like this cover really allows the true beauty of the songs lyrics shine through. holy cow.
I drove up to the city at night and found the place where you grew up and then where you stayed and we walked around and stayed up late under city lights, I spent the night, next to you in the house where you grew up, next to you I miraculousy woke up. In your parents' house I lied in bed with you. I went back to feel alone there. I went back to wipe it clean. I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams. And we went all the way up to the small town where I'm from with foggy air and the wind and the mountain top and we clung to rocks and looked off and you held my hand. You almost got to start feeling me. I finally felt like I was breathing free. Under swaying trees we fell asleep and we had the same dream, the stars were bright, we dream the same every night. On my island home I spent some time with you. I went back and felt alone there. I went back there by myself. I gave up on everything that we'd felt. We found a precious place in the sand right out in th ewind and we lied under a blanket and heard the furious sound, the roar of waves, the pounding surf, 2 bodies on the earth, it was intense just getting to be there next to you. And then I went and had sex with you. And you trying to get me then. And I was happy to let you in. I went back and wished I hadn't. I went back and felt regret. I went to the beach and I stared west. Every night when the sun went down in the town where we lived the empty streets were lit up by reflected light from a distant sun bouncing off a glowing ball of rock and we just lied on the roof and watched the moon, the moon, the blue light of the moon. We didn't talk and silently we both felt powerful and, like the moon, my chest was full because we both know we're just floating in space over molten rock and we felt safe and we discovered that our skin is soft. There's nothing left except certain death and that was comforting at night out under the moon. I went out last night to forget that. I went out and stared it down, but the Moon stared back at me and in it's light I saw my 2 feet on the ground.
How does one have such things? I did the mind blown emoji when I saw this 🤯 One of my all time favorites covering another one of my all time favorites yo
This is amazing. Thank you to the dude who wrote and recorded this and to the other dude who covered it and made it even better. Good job, guys. Really nice work.
Honestly, i feel like this cover would've fit extremely well in twin fantasy if will just decided to chuck a cover song into his concept album. the song and the album are about very similar things and share a lot of themes.
