cnet.co/W2RhwX After years of neglect, VW finally brought the Golf R back to U.S. shores, but was it worth the wait. CNET's Brian Cooley takes a ride in the 2012 VW Golf R.
RR evoque starts at $44k. You can buy basic mondeo or accord for that price. But this is the best speced golf you can get. It's ment to be exclusive a little.
Also, I totally agree that knobs are better for controlling the audio settings. The original head unit that I took out of my 07 GTI had knobs and I miss them with the touch screen. The screen would be substantially smaller if the knobs were brought back, though, and I'll take the greater real estate over quick access to settings that I rarely change.
I don't understand the hatred for SD cards in these reviews. I just stuffed that head unit into my 07 GTI partially to get the SD card capability and I find it great to store a ton of music in the car without having to deal with iPod connectivity (plus having to buy an iPod) or AUX cables. Maybe Bluetooth audio will change my mind, but I'm still waiting on getting a replacement adapter harness from Germany before I can hook up the Bluetooth module.
33,000! that's crazy I always thought golfs were supposed to be low market cars you know 15k-25k. I guess you really pay for that AWD and good performance
I used to be a dub head. I owned an 86 GTi, a 82 Scirocco and a 92 Jetta. The A2 cars wore me out. After the constant repairs on the A2s I kinda chilled on the VW scene. My Scirocco was not bad. Sold it because I could not find parts for it here where I live and prices for parts out of state were very high. Then I discovered TTTuning AFTER I sold the Scirocco....I was hella mad. Dubs still catch my eye when they roll by.
i LOVE the fact that this is AWD. I think its the best part of the car actually. as for the head unit goes, id take the rcd510 over the rns315 anyway (thats what i did in my own VW) but yes the rns510 is the best of the best
I won't make any other comments about the reviewer .......the thing I like about watching his videos....HE PICKS OUT THE FLAWS....that many other review sites don't.
2:00 Stop... stop right there. the VW (mine is GTI) has Bluetooth capability. therefore, you can listen and stream all music or video content via Bluetooth on the media tab on the stereo. so its not an issue if you know how to use Bluetooth, as most iPhone users do.
It's pretty close to the STI hatch... but the STI handles a lot better but you get a lot of more luxury in the interior while the STI is much more minimalistic.
Might sound stupid but I think this car should also came with frond wheel drive only option direct competition with speed 3. With almost perfect power match and 0-60 time
Which is typically what I hear from GTI owners who wish they could afford an R. It isn't overpriced if people are paying money for it, it's simply basic economics. After an ECU upgrade and new intake I'm pushing 310+ HP and blowing the doors off most cars.
*but you get a lot of more luxury in the interior in the Golf R The evo X is probably the best of all of them, since has more of all around driving characteristics... such as it acts as a better street car, while it can still offroad just as well as the STI
I agree with Cooley; why not just get the GTi? It has more usable power, looks the same, and costs less. I also agree with most if not all of you that VW should bring the Scirocco over to the U.S.; I love the style of it and the GTi motor in it is perfect.
This is a 10 year old comment I'm replying to, but as an owner of a GTI and an R, the R comes with a bigger turbo from the factory, and a simple tune pushes it up over 300hp. More useable power is definitely in the realm of the R. The GTI gets overwhelmed with the front wheel drive only. The GTI engine also had issues with the timing chain tensioner and plastic intake. In my opinion, the EA113 engine in the R, is actually more reliable than the early EA888 engines. The only downside to the mk6 Golf R, is no DSG transmission in the U.S.
"they also got a 4 door; that doesnt make sense to me with a *Golf* R, but its your money" ......aaand then Volkswagen releases the new "R", and only offer a 4 door in the USA.... WTF VW !?!??!
Also, it's not really a track car - the stability control is undefeatable, so I don't see you driving this hard on the track. Just do what I did - get a GTI :)
so you get the R for $33,990 and we in the UK get the R for £31,770... exchange rate these and we pay $49,259.40... now it makes me wonder why us Europeans have to pay full whack and get screwed over, but they send them over the sea on boats with all that shipping cost and you STILL get it cheaper than us Europeans....... and toyota4life *post below this* said (this car is a waste of money.. you really have to love golf cars to drop cash on this).... he has a toyota, that explains his comment
