Purchased a 2014 Fusion Energi with 61k miles recently. Example of my real life numbers from my last driving time while doing Uber: 59.5 Miles 31.3 EV miles 7.8 Regen Miles 42mpg 1.40 gallon(s) Brake Score 91% This is the best car that I’ve ever owned so far and the fuel savings in REAL driving is insane. ONLY complaints, battery has lost a chunk of its charge, it will charge to about 13mi and the seat belt gets stuck if I fold down the back seat which is apparently a common defect and I personally had to take it apart to fix.

I have the regular hybrid version and love it. What makes the Energi unattractive isn't the price, but the severely compromised trunk. I already sometimes complain about the 25% reduction in trunk space for the regular hybrid vs the gas-only version. The Energi's trunk is simply unsuitable for my lifestyle :( Bring the European Mondeo Estate to our shores, make an Energi version, and I'm sold. Or redesign the interior such that maybe the battery cuts into the rear seats and turns the middle seat into a large armrest, like the first generation Chevrolet Volt.

and what are you going to do with all the waste, OH bugger that, leave it up to the following generations to deal with!
@MaZEEZaM
@MaZEEZaM 10 лет назад
no, we have many other viable renewable energy options such as geothermal, Wind, wave, hydro. and others forms such as using biofuels an example being in Australia the sugar cane producers are now using the sugar cane waste material as a biofuel and not only covering their own farm use but covering the towns use of electricity also. Solar is just one of the options we have which btw can now offer base load energy via the Molten Salt Reactor.

MaZEEZaM i meant fusion, which is still in ddevelopment thers also other very promising forms of nuclear safe energy that could grant unlimited power. These are in development but public money tends to got to things like wind, which just seems like a huge waste as people are scared of the word Nuclear.

If only Ford can use aluminum in this car… That would help fuel economy and performance numbers increase significantly! Plus, I think a 1.0L Turbo or even a 1.6L Ecoboost would help

Common Cooley you didn't even factor in the replacement of the battery, or the fact that the car will depreciate faster because it has a battery.
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 9 лет назад
+TheTCOLL As long as you keep the battery plugged-in every day, it will lose capacity (about 30% over a decade), but never completely die. Hyundai uses the same Li-Ion battery & they give it a life warranty, because they know it will outlive the engine .
@TheTCOLL

electrictroy2010 Id love to see a link to this lifetime warranty. No lithium ion battery will last that long.

So add in the extra charge on your electric bill and the result is .....?????
@Hebrew42Day
@Hebrew42Day 5 лет назад
not a significant amount. If you charged it everynight it would cost $120.45 / year. That's for 8395 miles, using no gas during that period. To travel that far in the average car where you're getting ~25 mpg on average you're looking at using 336 gallons of gas, and paying $1309.62 / year to go 8395 miles Ten times the cost at current gas prices. Gas prices are likely to rise again as they did before the last recession. If they hit ~ $5 / gallon you're looking at $1680 / year. In six years, the average loan for a new car you'd save $7500 dollars. If you drive more conservatively on the electric you can get even more range out of the battery. I have the CMAX energi and it's rate at a 20 mile battery range. I drive in a way that my battery range is 34 miles. I also get 54 mpg in Hybrid mode, not 43.

Brian, when you say it's a no-brainer to choose energi over other versions, you fail to mention battery depreciation cost-of-ownership.
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 9 лет назад
+inboxnews Depreciation is irrelevant if you never trade-in the car (i.e. both hybrids & normal cars eventual die & then you tow them to the jnkyard) .
@inboxnews
@inboxnews 9 лет назад
The battery's last about 6 years, and cost $8,000. In order to get total value out of a car, you need to own it about 12 years, and drive appr. 200,000 miles. So yes, battery depreciation matters.
@logoturn
@logoturn 6 лет назад
battery depreciation? it depends on the car. prius batteries have been going right past 250,000 miles. im not sure about the longevity of this particular battery they are using, but do some research and you'll find that volts teslas and prius batteries are going the distance with near zero range loss after hundreds of thousands of miles. the reason is that if the battery cycles are properly limited by the manufacturers, they stay in a sweet spot for the life of the car. again though, not quite sure if energi is employing this quality battery construction, but so far, the jury is back on batter tech longevity, and they are standing the test of time.
@ALMX5DP

Pardon my pedestrian-hybrid ignorance, but the total power output had me do a double take. Why is the Fusion Energi only rated at 195hp when both units are rated to produce more? Cars such as the 918, P1 and La Ferrari all have hybrids which are rated by simply adding together the ICE and electric motor. Are mass produced grocery getters wired differently or is there trickery in their power implementation that makes them different from the latest round of hyper cars?
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 9 лет назад
+Alan Bowers The engine has its peak horsepower at around 6000 rpm, but the electric motor at that speed is only producing 40% of its peak horsepower. So the total hp at that rpm Not just simple addition .
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 9 лет назад
+electrictroy2010 Holy late response! Well I figured something like that would be at play. Just figured that an automaker would want to embellish their performance figures, however marketing could be at play (can't out power the "performance" models).

I don't see the big savings of the tax break, your still paying 40,000 for the car. It's 37,000 but with taxes (at least up here in New york) it's 3,000 so the car comes out to 40,000 out the door.
@EdgarRenje
@EdgarRenje 10 лет назад
Finally Ford releases a hybrid car, but as they do this "one Ford"- strategy nowadays, they should also align the model names for the particular cars. For example this one is called "Mondeo" here in Germany and I think also in the rest of Europe. "Fusion" was a little SUV, when this class wasn't even trendy... Nevertheless I'm looking forward to see this car - and engine combination - here, too. Just with any other transmission...please, Ford, please...
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 9 лет назад
+Edgar Renje It won't work without the CVT. It's integral to how the motor & engine conenct together. As for the nane, Ford USA has an obsession with "F" names: Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Ford Fusion .
@EdgarRenje
@EdgarRenje 9 лет назад
electrictroy2010 I thought the same for a while, but Honda released a Hybrid with manual - so, it is possible.
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 8 лет назад
No you misunderstood. I meant the FORD DESIGN has to be a cvt, because it is based around an automatic transmission. (If they released a manual version, then they'd have to create a whole different hybrid, designed from scratch.) .

Great video and nice job with the breakdown at the end. BTW - I detest hybrids. Love normally aspirated and all-electrics...hate hybrids. And government incentives are pathetic. These cars are beyond the reach of lower middle and down class people...probably a lot of middle class as well. So you have the masses paying more tax dollars so that upper middle class and up people can drive hybrids (the Volt - in 2013 - had the 2'nd highest family income of ANY car sold in America). And forget the 'it's not tax dollars, it's tax credits'. Wrong. When the government takes in less taxes from one person, it has to take in more from another to make up the difference. That is just wrong.
@electrictroy2010
@electrictroy2010 9 лет назад
+McRocket No when the government takes-in less money from a Hybrid driver, it makes up the difference by asking the Federal Reserve to print a bunch of dollars (see 2008 and 09 for prime examples) .

Can you explain the difference between plug in hybrid, normal hybrid and electrical cars
@MaZEEZaM
@MaZEEZaM 10 лет назад
Dan lee not necessarily the case, the best ones are the engines like in the Mitsubishi PHEV where it has a petrol engine that generates electricity for the car when needed but otherwise runs on electricity, that way you don't require being plugged in, it still has a huge distance to fuel ratio and always has the backup of pure petrol engine use if required :)
@faizanjoyia
@faizanjoyia 10 лет назад
MaZEEZaM Phev stands for plug in hybrid electric vehicle
@MaZEEZaM
@MaZEEZaM 10 лет назад
is it plug in LOL, my error, Im pretty sure its optional though given you can charge it using the petrol engine. Also the pure electric distance was pretty poor but the combined fuel economy is still really good.
@branot89
@branot89 10 лет назад
1. Mild hybrid (Honda Insight) can't run on electric alone 2. Normal hybrid (Toyota Prius) can run up to 1-2 miles on electric alone 3. Plug in hybrid can be charged from a power outlet and can run more on electric alone (in this case 20 miles) 4. Extended range electric vehicle (Chevy Volt) is always running on electric power. Gasoline engine is not connected to the wheels, it is used as a generator to charge the batteries. 5. Electric vehicle (Tesla Model S) doesn't have a gasoline engine. It has big battery and electric motor.

I have driven one and its no way a better car than Fusion,specially handling and brake feel is shit compared to Ford fusion energi which despite its weight is kind of fun to drive,and fusion bein an energi model dosent look alien like the volt needs to, I drove the volt at Germany and there were some ill fit plastic panels inside as well,the air conditioning sucks big time compared to fusions as well Maybe u havent driven both of em.
@logoturn
@logoturn 6 лет назад
this is a tough call. the volt is hands down the better electric technology because you can run electric as high as 60 miles on a charge, even 70 on a good day. this is by far the more efficient car. the fusion is more comfortable. both cars are a no go for families anyway because the rear seat in the volt is awful, and the trunk in the fusion is non existant. if i had to choose one id go with the volt simply because it has a more functional trunk, and bangs out literally twice the ev range. for older buyers, the fusion wins because it is vastly more comfortable. speed and handling are about the same for both. to the guy who said volt is poorly constructed, he doesnt know what he's talking about. the first gen at least is one of the most reliable and well made chevy's in history, and boasts a 94 percent customer satisfaction rating, the highest gm has ever had for any car it has ever made save for maybe the corvette.
