Hey Claus - OMG! It's finally happened. An entire video with which I agree absolutely 100%, No exceptions whatsoever. At my age I have to be careful getting out my slightly elevated BED for those late-night trips; can't imagine what it would be like trying to find my down from a perch like those car-top tents! Great PSA!
Piss out of the tent. Hope you don't get dribbles on your car or a golden shower if windy. Wait, a golden shower, a tent on the roof of your car sounds kinda sexy! Keep up the good work Claus.
I outgrew tent camping much less car top tents a long time ago, I'm like you Claus I have a trailer and guess what...it has air conditioning and a heater because in Texas we camp year round
Couple of points, first as for the pissing, nothing a funnel and a small length of garden hose wont fix.😜, second some people bring their bikes and park the car for the week and ride their bikes into town and usually ya just have to get small stuff from town as ya already brought 90% of what ya need. third that rocking motion could be fun (when the car is a rockin don't come a knockin😂. Also some places in the united states have tarantulas and no way in heck am I sleeping on the ground with those running around!😬. LOL just poking some fun, personally I also would not buy a car top tent either. Seems like just too much trouble. I'd rather put down the seats and sleep in the back of the car if I had to.👍
I thought that it was stupid when I saw one on the net yesterday. My first thought was the weight on the car and my second was what happens when a very strong wind hits it.
I have one! It's not for everyone, sure (especially not for seniors who can't climb a ladder). Personally, I don't need to piss during the night so I don't have that problem. Also, for those who are wondering, it usually takes 5 minutes max to pack and unpack the tent once you know how to do it. So yes, you will "waste" extra minutes if you want to drive somewhere. As I said, not for everyone. The thing Claus does not mention is that it can cost a lot of money (mine was about 2000 CAD with the rack). There are cheaper ways to camp. I still enjoy it anyway tho.
For people that have bought a van to make it a camper, such as a VW, the price of a "pop top" in Germany is about €9k, the price for a roof tent is about €3k. That is a big difference in price. Sure there are some that would have a problem getting up but it is a solution to some people.
OR, get this, spend 300 euros for a regular tent. Germany has zero bears, in Romania, sure, it's another thing, we have bears freaking everywhere because they are "endangered" (more like, danger to us humans, but who cares about humans, am I right) and anyway a freaking car top tent wouldn't protect you from bears they can climb with ease, so what's the point of car top tents anyway?
@@crimsonlightbinder Some places where you go the camp site is small or the ground is difficult for tent pegs. Also if you use the truck rest stops it can be used too. It all depends on the usage model and the style.
I pull a trailer with a toilet because I have to get up so much at night. Although I would stand at the edge of the tend and go. No need to crawl down.
When i had a fall i bruised my ribs bad ( a stretching sound) and i could not sleep in a bed for a month. I promised my sons scout group to help them on a camping trip sleeping in tents. i slept in a lawn chair in the tent in severe pain getting in and out. I had some dehydration the next day because i did not drink much water so i would not have to get up in the middle of the night to pee.
I agree with your reasoning, but unfortunately your historical reference is inaccurate. One of the options Henry Ford offered on the Model T was a car/tent.
Claus....some of us go deep into the forest and stay there as THAT is our destination to smooth things out. No need to travel from the camping spot. For that matter, you might as well get a motel room to travel from. Pack your vehicle with Supplies, lots of Supplies, and smooth things out. Your rant on camping seems like a motel room would have been the better choice..
... Laus ain't ascareda no ground dwellin' venomous varmints! He'll be singing a different tune when he's living in that Subaru down by the river ... #Matt Foley SNL
... ... I have to admit I'd love to see the swarm of cicadaZ gnawing on CK's "stuff" while he's campin' on the ground ... ... daddy, why dem insect-lookin' thingies chewin' on yer Special Purpose, daddy?
If you don't want to sleep on the ground, save yourself thousands and buy a $70 cot or inflatable mat, lol! And also for the reasons in the rant video. I'm getting up twice a night, FYI.
Lol I'm a young person not a balding oldie like some of you. I don't need to piss 50 times a night. Also who the fuck would leave their camping gear at the site while they leave??? Insane take. It's 2024 and anything not tied down will be stolen. I'd rather set up 1 minute before I sleep in only one minute and then close it in a minute after I wake up
