#ISSIMI #JasonCammmisa #DerekTamScott #CarmudgeonShow
It’s car week! Or rather, it was car week when Jason and Derek recorded their first in-person Carmudgeon episode since before the pandemic. In this episode, they catch up on recent automotive happenings, as well as discussing Car Week and whether it’s worth making the pilgrimage to attend. Jason shares his impressions of both Derek’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce and the Ferrari 288 GTO that he drove, and Derek shares some observations about the future of market for collector and enthusiast cars, including which ones are likely to move in the future, and which ones whose best days may be behind them in terms of market interest. They discuss why a Jaguar D-Type is worth less than a McLaren F1 and this of course is logically followed by a discussion of BMW E30 vs 944 and then the VW ID4 because these two cannot stay on the same page for more than a few seconds.
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
ISSIMI is an enthusiast-owned, full-service specialist offering sales, consignment, collection management, service, and consulting to discerning enthusiasts and collectors. Specializing in complex transactions that include international services for exceptional cars, ISSIMI’s San Francisco Bay Area and Europe-based teams of experts pride themselves on transparency and knowledge.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on RU-vid alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

I had a Honda Beat and loved it! I sold it to buy a Cappuccino, which is a bit more practical and quicker, but has less personality. The Beat sounded amazing, went through the (very short) gears super quick, and was just a blast on the backroads. Kept up with much faster things as long as the road was tight enough. So yeah...I might buy another Beat someday. FYI Randy Pobst even drove my Beat around Pitt Raceway...the video's in my channel!

@@joeleonard9965 I'm a euro M40 316i E36 owner, it's a dog. The best BMW 4 banger for the E30/E36 is the M42 318is engine so it makes sense you like, great top end. Depends on what you're looking for. Noise alone I want to feel like I'm in Ronin so I'll swap a 6 cylinder someday soon, probably a euro 328i engine, the best E36 6 cylinder apparently. I was literally commenting this morning on another video that it would be cool to see a comparison between a well sorted 944 S2 and a new BRZ/86. The dimensions, weight, power figures and even the side profile are similar. The main differences being the wheelbase and the transaxle. Would be awesome to see Jason doing a video about that.

Can Jason and DTS do a video on competitive markets and the rule of 3’s in automotive markets? Examples like Mercedes-BMW-Audi, Ford-Chevorlet-Dodge, Toyota-Honda-Nissan and how Hyundai/Kia replaced Nissan. The Hyundai Genesis Coupè started out as a simulacra of the Infiniti G37, yet now Sonata’s and Elantra’s are outselling Altima’s and Sentra’s. The push and pull of market leaders like Mercedes, Toyota-Lexus, and Chevorlet being least innovative; while BMW, Honda-Acura, and Ford being focused on performance and quality; while Audi, Nissan-Infiniti, Hyundai-Kia, and Dodge being focused on incentives and value pricing.

Dear Jason and DTS, what do you think of this rambling i had inspired by yall?: What Happened to Subaru’s WRX redesign? The Answer: Honda happened. Here’s what I think was going through Subaru’s mind when they developed this new gen CVT-focused Subaru WRX: lean in on the AWD off-road wilderness angle with weird plastic *because Subaru straight-up cannot build a better daily driver STREET Car than the Honda Civic Si.* I mean the writing’s been on the wall since the Subaru Impreza WRX STi vs Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution days. Mitsubishi would always have the sharper car that’s more livable on public roads, while Subaru was a bit more of a loud brute due to the boxer engine rumble. In the Post-Group B rally era after 2002: Mitsubishi was much more able to integrate the economy car based Lancer Evo into a Skyline/Lamborghini-killing street performance than the more understeery Symmetrical AWD Impreza STi. When the Ford Focus RS hatchback came out, it immediately took the 2016 Subaru WRX STi sedan’s lunch money. And so Subaru now needs to play to its strengths in the face of a 306hp Honda Civic Type R. What Honda is doing with $35K FWD is beating MK5 Toyota/BMW Supra’s at tracks. The Naturally Aspirated VTEC Honda Civic Si has been beating the turbo Subaru Impreza WRX in the manual sedan market ever since 2006 with the 8th gen’s. The Honda Si has a better manual shifter, way better MPG’s, better reliability, better handling, better interior, is a better daily driver, is a better family car, and is usually a more fun car on twisty back roads. Subsequently, the 9th and 10th gen Si’s have just been refining each year to be easier to live with. The amount of development costs to get a performance Impreza to handle itself like a Civic Si does would be ridiculous. And that’s to say nothing of the Volkswagon GTi/GLi, Golf R, Hyundai Veloster Turbo/Elantra N-Line/Kia Forte GT, and Hyundai Veloster N. All of them have built a more livable car than the current Subaru WRX. Sure, they are not as loud nor exciting as the Subaru Boxer Rumble/Exhaust with Winter tires and AWD; but usually they are more reliable (mostly applies to Honda), have more MPG, and cost less to maintain too. Even the Mazda 3 Hatchback Turbo came back with AWD because they knew there was an open market niche that Subaru wasn’t filling correctly. Now there are rumors Toyota wants to make a new GR Corolla? So what is Subaru to do? Keep development costs extremely low by using a cheap global platform, put worthless plastic body cladding to tell everyone that the WRX is rugged and signal as the only AWD option in the segment. And, Well they put 300% emphasis on the CVT WRX because Honda is still refusing to put an automatic transmission option on their enthusiast oriented Honda Civic Si and Type R’s. Volkswagon did the same marketing with their automatic DSG to appeal their GLi/GTi/R to the 98% of US population that don’t know how to drive stick shift. Now Hyundai did the same for their automatic DCT buyers of the Veloster Turbo/N and Elantra Sport/N-line/N. You can’t even get a manual GTi or Veloster Turbo without special ordering one one many dealerships. Yet Honda still insists on no automatic Si’s. 😂👍

The special-production fettled-by-Porsche 500 E is indeed named that way, not E500, which is a totally different normal-production M-B (and of a different generation, if I recall). The SL500 of his generation was the one where they reversed the digits and letters, so it also is correctly "SL500" (as opposed to the 500 SL of the generation prior)

at 8:36 someone tried to get in. You can see it in the reflection on the TV in the background. (I only noticed because I was wondering what the strange green thing on the TV is at this exact moment) At 9:15 they are two guys now. When i hear the "Slow car fast" thing i always think people should add what they mean with "slow car" for the non knowledgable. I have driven many slow cars, actually most of the cars i have driven, you two would consider very slow. But almost none of them was fun to be moved "fast" or better said, in a spirited manner/ at full throttle. On the other hand, driving in an old E63 (pre Turbo) still feels special to me even after 7 years, no matter if slow or not slow in the dry, in the snow... (And i think it could be considered fast in the dry)

40:19 did Hyphen just call the Conquest "FWD"??? Pushup-earning misstep for certain 😅 41:30 the 944 turbo here is described as "not all that fast" yet the 88+ (power bump from 217 to 250) were comparable in speed (on street and on track) to the _930_ , much less a standard contemporary 911. A decent exhaust system partially solves the noise problem (as much as can be solved while still having a 4-cylinder). The crazy prices now don't help the 944/951's cause, but they are nowhere near as stupid as the money/experience ratio for a something like a 911 SC. If the 951 prices were still similar to what they were just a handful of years ago (and let's be honest, what they had been for the past few decades; my dad bought one with some mileage and paint issues for a 4-digit sum in 1996 or 1997), I imagine it would have been more appealing. 47:33 I imagine the rationale (to VW bean-counters, at least) was that the energy regen on the rear axle reduced the need for discs? Still weird 😆 Great to have the show back! Looks like a I have missed an episode (or two 😬) since this one came out, so it's a good thing I've got a few spare minutes this weekend to watch the new ones 😁

Speaking of transporting cars on other cool cars: There's a custom built VW transporter, double cabin up front plus long bed welded together, that used to carry a whole Formula V (Formel Vau) race car - and is still used today (now with a later transporter engine) to carry an Enzmann 506 spider, also VW based. That's badass.
