Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle Watercolour Pencils Full 76 Set Review! Are They Worth the Money?

Here's a video I've been meaning to film for a long time! Today I'll be reviewing the full set of Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils. This is the 76 box set plus two Technalo graphite pencils, and it comes in a sturdy cardboard box, to match the Luminance set. These are the top tier water soluble pencils in their range, and therefore they are pretty expensive. Are they worth their hefty price tag? Let's find out as I swatch out all of the colours and do some artworks!

I can't seem to find the colour chart! Here's a review by Kimberly Crick which has a chart, and also goes into depth with their lightfastness: www.kimcrick.com/pages/museum...

I have had the Caran d'Ache Aquarelle pencils on my amazon wish list since 2019, every year I send the list to my family and every year they buy me something else lol, they are expensive though, I loved your pigeon and parrot!! Such a wonderfully bright and colourful artwork! :D

Hi, Becky! What beautiful birds!!!! My earlier comment (I actually beat aw to it!) was about my longing for the full sets of AD and Museum, and should I watch the video. However, watching the swatches has helped enormously, as with my mongrel set of 13 different brands and 81 colours, I have all but 5 of the colours I need, all in a neat, zipped wallet. These 5 are from cheaper sets and not available open stock or are discontinued colours. I have to contact the big boys (AD, Cd'A and Derwent) to see if they can match those, as so far, I've failed from swatch cards. The majority of the 13 brands are now those 4 'major' players - I have both Supracolor and Museum, as well as AD & Derwent, as I'm gradually needing to replace things and taking the opportunity to upgrade as I do so As for the activating? I think primarily, it's the paper, but if you add two drops of vegetable glycerine to about 100mls of your water, you should get 100% pigment activation first go. Don't add more than that, or you'll end up with a shiny result! I usually get mine from the local pharmacy, in 100 or 200ml bottles, which is plenty, but you can buy it elsewhere, and there are other uses for it, other than watercolour pencils and paints. You can use the same amount in your w/c water and it'll help the paint to flow more freely, and adding a drop into paint that tends to crack (burnt umber, anyone???) when you're filling pans from a tube helps that, too. Add the drop first, so if you accidentally drop more, you can sort it out, and then stir it in well.

I slept in this morning, so I'm wayyyy behind when it comes to answering comments, eep! I was going to say that maybe it will help to choose which set to have between these, Supracolors and Albrechts. I am planning a showdown video at some point, to compare them all directly but it probably won't happen for a little while. I might try the glycerine trick too - it hadn't occurred to me to add it to the water pot. 😊

@@awatercolouristHi, aw! How're you? I'm in the early recovery stage of Covid. After almost four years, the bug finally got me, and well, frankly, this is frustrating, as I'd been following events and decided _literally that weekend_, that it was about time to put the mask back on (being in a highly vulnerable category, I only stopped wearing it in shops, church, etc, 5 months ago...).That was Monday, 20.09.23, and the last time I went out. I love your collage painting you did with these. How beautiful, especially with the addition of the butterflies, etc. Your swatching prompted me to check those two potentially swapped colors in my set of Caran d'aches Aquarelles I found that my set is also like yours. The Dark Phthalo Green and the Dark Sap Green pencil labels appear to be reversed. I've also had mine for a while so not sure if it was caught in more recent sets. I was in the middle of swatching my 100 Luminance set when your video appeared. Boy did I underestimate the time it takes to swatch 100 pencils! They are finally done. Thanks for the tip on the two greens labeling and sharing your work.

It takes absolutely ages to swatch large pencil sets! That's why I speed up my footage because everyone (including myself) would die of boredom at real time. 😂 I wonder if those two greens are still mislabelled - I might try to look at the single pencils the next time I'm at The Art Shop.

I just watched your Albrecht Durer set swatching video, then this one, and I will look at the Supracolors next. I like the speeded up swatching videos, real time takes long enough doing it myself. I think of these colors as being "softer" or they remind me of antique colors compared to the A.B set, but I haven't painted anything yet other than the long swatching. I love your artwork that you create after each new art materials swatch. Thank you.

I feel like there are more opaque colours in this set, compared with Albrechts which are mostly transparent. I really need to do a full side by side comparison. Your birds are lovely!! I like these kind of spreads, especially for trying out new art supplies! I have only a few of these pencils and I do like them, though I prefer the Albrecht Dürer ones as they seem more transparent to me. I like using watercolour pencils washed out for a base layer and then dry on top, which gives the colours so much depth.

Thank you SO incredibly much! I have wanted to comment all day but my comment was quite long! I think I may write it when I’m not so exhausted and it’s not so late. Your drawing / painting turned out absolutely stunning- I love how you did this piece ! The vibrancy of the pencils really is incredible! As for your funny purple- I have seen a few people mention about the purples ( including Lisa from lachri fine art), and that some colours feel different ( & I’ve always felt there are variations in all sets, probably due to the pigments used) … so it may not just be due to wetting it 🤷‍♀️ or perhaps a combination of both. I have a few odd colours I think… Will check which purples & others & let you know ☺️. I noticed that when you activated the swatch, did you have a few , almost bits of pigment or granulation ( wouldn’t expect that with pencils but they are like actual watercolour in the pencil if that makes sense, which is what makes them unique from all other watercolour pencils, and someone mentioned that it can occur with these 🤷‍♀️)?. I had a bit of a panic the other day when I commented on your Albrecht durer video… I’m so sorry!
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear 9 месяцев назад
It's all good, I appreciate your thoughtful comments! So, from what I'm experiencing, it seems like the Museum Aquarelles are heavier and often quite opaque like gouache; whether that's pigment load or granulating ones I'm not sure, and the Albrechts feel a bit more transparent. I think Albrecht might dissolve a bit more easily? I need to do a full side by side comparison and use them both at the same time to get a really solid opinion on them both - I like both sets of pencils though! And yes, that violet is being recalcitrant - it's the only one which is like that so I don't know if it is just the pencil itself, or that I dried it out with the water.

@@BeckyTregear thank you so incredibly much and sorry it took a while for me to get back to you. I actually purchased new/ unused box set from fb market place at an insanely cheep price(less than 1/4 full price...). I just cant help but wonder if some of mine are a bit odd or perhaps they are just different (most seem amazing tho! I do know they are quite old however, so...). Or maybe its in my head- cant believe i could get that lucky and im analysing every detail! lol Surely nothing so lucky could happen to me... May i ask, do you find that some colours dont seem to quite 'flow' as much as others and do feel a bit heavy- i guess that is the gouache type thing you mentotioned? I found that some didn't dissolve as well as the durers too and I thought it would be opposite . And im so sure one of my colours (umber i think) granulates a little 😂. And so sorry- another question- my 640 feel quite dry, may i ask does yours? I think a few that feel dry . As i said above, i did notice variation among them but expect that to some extent anyway . LOl. Im going to get some open stock to see how they compare... but they are amazing! Agree the durers are more transparent and I think would e easier to use and layer perhaps? I think i prefer them on cold pressed although i know most people prefer hot pressed for watercolour pencils. Thank you so much and so sorry for my long and late reply edit- really lookinging forward to seeing your comparison between the AD's, supracolors and Museums :)

Hi Becky, great video. I've always wondered about these pencils. I started with Derwent Academy and they were ok, not very pigmented. Then my daughter gave me an old set of Derwent watercolour pencils that my stepfather used to have and they were so good, I decided to buy the 72 set but to my disappointment they were not the same as the old ones, they felt very plasticky and did not layer at all. Then I bought a 36 set of the Albert Durers and was blown away. They completely dissolve, without leaving any marks, they are more pigmented dry than any of my colour pencils, including the Polychromos and Derwent Coloursoft. They are even more pigmented than Prismacolor Premier but not as creamy. If I had to start all over, I would probably first buy the Albert Durers and then probably the Prismacolors. I am interested in the beige range in the Supracolors, I'll have to try them some day but I wonder if they are like the Prismacolor French Greys. I would love to try the Luminance one day but they are so expensive. I recently got a great deal on the Lightfast but haven't had a chance to use them yet. Have a great day Becky. Pretty pencils. I still need to really learn watercolor pencil drawing (well all water colour mediums honestly). Although I've only got Inktense and kids Faber Castell water colour pencils. The Inktense are obviously fine to try and learn with, even if they aren't exactly water colour. At least they wont reactivate, which might be helpful for learning. @@shadowguard3578 😂 my mistake. I had meant to say I didn’t know that you were into water-soluble pencils 😄. I think it’s an open secret that we are all into watercolours 😆😆.

I made a research about lightfast test including the Caran d'ache Museum, more than half of the colors are still lightfast is it should be few are completely wiped out or had fade/changed. Sadly Albrecht Durer pencils aren't featured
@BeckyTregear

Yes, they often say lightfast and then independent tests prove otherwise. I think I'll try and get a big test going for different watercolour pencils.

@@BeckyTregear and I forgot to mention that the colors were also activated with waters and are also compared to the dry looks of the pigments. The test was done in Israel within 12 weeks but it should be enough for the test because the conditions were too extreme. And based on what I saw, it would seem that activation with waters has nothing to do with the lightfastness because the waters will soon evaporate on the paper while the melted pigments will stay on the paper when it dries.

Hi Becky, can you give your quick thoughts on the differences between the supracolor softs and the museum aquarelle, other than the lightfastness? Are they less pigmented, harder, or more difficult to rewet? Thanks!
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear 9 месяцев назад
From memory, Supracolor are a little firmer than the Museums, and Supras also have a much larger colour range with a lot of bright and pastel colours that I don't think are very lightfast (but they're very pretty!). Both pencils rewet well but I really need to do a side by side comparison to say which is better here. I've got a bunch of future videos to make on this subject! 😂

Sarah, I don't have the full set, but of those I have, I have had for quite some time, and use them alongside Supracolor and Albrecht Durer. The Museum are definitely softer than Supracolor, which can be frustrating, as it can be hard to get detail without a very sharp point (and consequent loss of pencil to get that sharp point, unless using a knife) . Otherwise, I think it's pretty much on a par, as most of the less lightfast Supracolour are missing from the Museum set. What is truly, utterly frustrating, though, is that Cd'A have chosen completely different names for most of the Museum range, so it's really hard to make the cross-over! I think what we're really paying for - and it's worth it, I think - is the thicker core size. Supracolor lasts well, but I'm guessing that Museum will make its main gain for us from that thicker core and the subsequent more even lay-down. Hope this helps a bit? 😊

It sure does! I'm doing my best to work my way through stuff in my studio...this year has been a bit more successful when it comes to that, though I did get sent a fair bit of stuff as well so that doesn't help! I've been giving stuff away to arty friends.

I finally have them, at least 13 colors from Open stocks. BTW, what's the difference between those two Black? The other is just a Regular Black while the other is "Ivory Black"? What's the point of Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle for having two blacks with different titles?
@BeckyTregear
@BeckyTregear 4 месяца назад
Going off memory, Ivory Black is usually warmer toned than Black (which is maybe Lamp Black). So one will be slightly browner than the other. The subtleties of blacks. ❤

Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook - the paper is nice but it seems to work better for watercolour pencils than actual watercolours as it doesn't like heavy washes, lol.
