I went to this museum in Rome and spent long minutes in front of this work. There were no visitors because it was still the end of Covid and many borders were still closed. In the room, it was just me and this canvas. I'll never forget that experience.

I actually went to Palazzo Barberini in 2018 and was very excited to see Judith and Holofernes live... only to find out that it was on loan to an exhibition in Paris... #sad #fail haha. Thanks for this wonderful video, I am preparing a presentation on this piece for my last uni project!

Aw haha, bummer!! The little 'on loan' tag can be disheartening. I think you'll have to plan another trip to Rome to celebrate your final university project. Good luck with your presentation. If you are still working on it: Sebastian Schütze's book on Caravaggio is really excellent.

Very informative video, thank you, it will help me with my master study of this beautiful painting. Although my version will be deconstructed over 3 canvases. Oh and you have a great speaking voice. Again many thanks....

My favorite paintings of Caravaggio are Saint Jerome who Writes, Saint Francis in Meditation,Flagellation of Christ, The Crucifixion of Saint Peter, The Unbelief of Saint Thomas, The Burial of Christ, The Capture of Christ, Judith and Holofernes, The Ecstasy of Saint Francis,Victorious Cupid,Medusa and Bacchus. Undoubtedly the greatest painter of Christian themes in history followed by El Greco. Caravaggio's influence goes beyond painting, also in cinema, theater, scenography

Interesting how their clothing would be rather modern for the time (16th century), perhaps this is to give a more modern feel to it so that it is relatable, or perhaps it is because Caravaggio didn't have any frame of reference for historically correct clothing of the time for want of archaeological knowledge. If it's the former it's amusing to think that had de Caravaggio lived in our time, Judith may well have been depicted wearing a blouse, blazer jacket, or even a hoodie.
