There are three reasons why a winch rope should be under wound; A) less stress on mounting hardware. This is only really applicable when the winch is flat-mounted on a horizontal surface, this is not really applicable if the vehicle is vertically mounted, like in this case. B) avoid damaging the cone brake. The brake is designed to function in one direction only. If you overwind your rope/drum, the brake may fail off (and not work at all) or fail on and seize the drum, rendering the icy unusable. C) avoid people telling you “it should be underneath the drum”. People will stop you in the street and lecture you about how you don’t know out to install a winch, that you are not a real 4WDer, you don’t know what you are doing, blah blah blah. Sometimes I is better to conform to the convention.
