The Lansky Eraser is also excellent for rubbing off rust and stains. It has silicon carbide particles in the rubber compound. Flitz polishing paste or a competitor to do the final polish.

Use a little machine oil (3in1) with the wet and dry sand paper as it works better and wipe a little 3in1 oil on the blade before you put it back into its sheath and it’ll stay in better condition.

I was told by a old,old blacksmith , many years ago . . ." Always put grease on your blades to prevent oxygen getting to the metal" . . . I always use Vaseline, and always take a tube/tub of it with me when going into the woods. Additionally , tons of folk dry their knives but put the knife away in a damp leather sheath. Always dry a leather sheath and wipe out and dry plastic sheaths. Happy Trails Folks.

Hello, great video,on my first pukko 140,I experienced some rust not much,I stuck mine in a glass of vinegar, worked perfectly, then washed off my blade an coated it with frog lube I ordered, nontoxic an biodegradable, just wipe off blade before use food prep wise an other stuff,if you use it after wiping blade down an gets wet, you'll notice water repels off exceptionally well,so just to know, also steel wool will when using on your blade is safe an won't scratch your blade unless your not worried of that,I try to take care of my knives an skrama,I love these tough blades I got from Finland much like yours,ty just thought I'd share some info with you.

I'm right there with you on carbon steel.....which I call a "working man's steel". I use baking soda and water formed into a paste with some copper or steel wool to get the rust off. I also put a thin layer of Ballistol on the blade if I'm going to store it away for a while. A nice enough patina on carbon steel mitigates most of the rust as long as it's kept dry when not in use.

i have had a knife that would start rusting in under and hour of getting went, .... i got fed up and soaked it in vinegar to force a patina ... after which it no loner rusts.

My Jaakari puuko's edge chips like crazy.. I've reprofiled it, same results. I reprofiled again, removed more steel, still chips like crazy, even if I only make feathersticks. I know the nature of the scandi edge, I'm also make money sharpening knives for the last 20 years, so I'm 100% sure, I got a really poor heat treated blade. By the way, nice tips there! Ballistol oil is a good option to avoid rust.

Lol I bought one of those hefty Smith and Wesson border guards. It's painted black in some sort of special paint or coating. I think it's this same metal in the video, but I'm not sure, But whatever it is, it might be worth looking into cause I live in nova Scotia and the salt in the air is INSANE. I left a bunch of tools in a bag most of them were "stainless steel" and they all had rust/corrosion on them, but not the border guard Smith and Wesson knife. It was completely covered in salt. I could not believe it, but there it was. I brushed some salt off and it was fine underneath. Completely preserved. The knife was fine, but everything got rust on it. That was absolutely insane. I still got that knife. Even lost a couple other folders in there lol

I always carry steel wool when I go hiking. Since you can use it to start a fire, believe it or not. I guess though, I am lucky to live in a dry climate. Mostly I have to quickly clean my knives after I use them in the kitchen. I don't even like patina on my knife. I'm strange that way.

Good job Simon! My favorite pocket knife is the Spyderco Pacific Salt with the H1 steel for its corrosion resistance. Using the finer grits of carborundum sandpaper is what I use also. If one wants/needs to add oil, it should be vegetable based especially if using the knife for food prep, Balistol is also a good choice. I always force a patina on my blades to further protect it from rust.

Nice video man. Personally, I consider stainless steel to be the superior material compared to carbon steel for this very reason, especially considering that modern types of stainless steel can surpass many varieties of carbon steel in performance, so IMO, using carbon steel only leads to wasting time on maintenance.

I've got a few cheap (but tough) Schrade survival knives in 1095, that pretty much never rust. Take the scales off (if you can), and soak the blade in really hot vinegar. You'll get a nice patina on it, very quickly (and a lot more uniform, than trying to use mustard). Oh, forgot to say, to take off the coating, first. I put a bunch of jasco on it, then scraped it all off, then washed it before doing the vinegar thing. Just do it outside, folks. It smells really bad.
