Somebody please explain me what does the word carcinoid tumor mean?? I mean like when it occurs in GI its the tumor of argentaffin cells which secrete serotonin and when it occurs in lungs its a different cell which secretes ACTH, So is it simply a tumor which secretes some sort of hormone but there are other tumors as well which secrete hormones and not all such tumors are called carcinoid tumor. Or is it so that a Carcinoid tumor is the one which secrete hormone but does not normally contains cells which should be secreting that hormone, eg , Carcinoid tumor of lungs which secrete ACTH. But then theres small cell lung cancer which secretes ACTH and ADH and is not called carcinoid tumor. Or is it so that a carcinoid tumor is the one which secretes 5HT. I am super-confused. Please help!!!!!
Carcinoid syndrome is a functioning tumour that produces hormones . Depending on where they are they produce different hormones ie stomach may produce histamine . I am experiencing this now and waiting for tests
