+Ashley Yates Great question, Ashley! Yes, you can work in a cardiologist office after you graduate, however, many offices I've seen prefer at least 1-2 years of clinical experience (aka hospital experience). But this totally depends on the preference of the office. Job training in a hospital and office will be different because the hospital environment will require you to provide 24 hour bedside care that will be intense at times (this will involve starting & maintaining cardiac drips, monitoring EKGs, assisting with bedside procedures etc.) At an office job you will help with procedures (if the office performs them) like stress tests, stress echos, EKGs, heart monitoring etc, collecting health history, take vitals etc. I highly recommend if you want to go into cardiology that you work in at hospital for at least 1 year to get experience and then get a job at a cardiologist office. I hope that helps :) -Sarah

I just want to thank you for this video. Been a nurse for 27 years and along the way I was the one who would be thinking "something's not right here" with my Post-CABG or CHF patients (in rehab or or skilled nursing environments) and would get on the phone and get them taken care of, even saving lives with early recognition. Now I have my own heart problems after I had a massive PE. Having rhythm issues afterward. Hoping it's treatable and reversible. I'm very lucky to be alive and working again.. If I make it, cardiac is definitely where I want to work. Your video is just the ticket. ❤ I've just been floored by the care the cardiac and other nurses who took care of me and I will never forget them. The ones who gave me a bedbath and a shampoo cap in the middle of the night after days without a bath; the ICU nurse that took the time to talk to me and told me she's seen people like me go home; on day #2 when I was on a regular hospital floor and they were debating whether sto just send me home and someone stood up for me and said "he needs an IVC filter, like now" and "he needs to be in the ICU area to be monitored closely...." When I worked hospice, a couple of patients told me "this is heaven being taken care of by you people." I didnt understand at the time, but when I was the patient, I totally understood them now.

I love getting to hear your southern accent in all of your videos (have learned so much from you while studying btw!). I have one too and find it comes out a lot when I'm talking to my patients because I like to get to know them and it seems to comfort them! People in the city I now live in don't get to hear it often haha. I'm a care partner on a cardiology floor and am really considering becoming a nurse on the floor when I graduate next year because I love the patient population.Usually all the patients are over 60 years old, but about 30% are under I'd say. It's so rewarding learning about them and having them share their experiences they've had with the world. They teach me a lot about myself honestly. Plus, the nurses work so closely with the doctor's and stay on their toes watching for slight changes and working to solve problems. They definitely stand out from nurses on most other floors.

I like cardiac and I believe that's what I'm wanting to do. I really want a unit where I'm going to get skills and experience. Thanks. Also, I took a phlebotomy course for 6 weeks. Will that be helpful as a cardiac nurse? Also, while in clinicals what kind of job do you I should partake in? My program only has clinicals during the day. what kind of job should I take that won't be overwhelming? I'm currently a dental Assistant, and trying to get a job in phlebotomy.
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 лет назад
+Latece Keyes Yes, phlebotomy is so helpful as a cardiac nurse because many times you have to draw a patient's blood to check cardiac enzymes, electrolytes, and drug levels. In clinicals, you will work with another registered nurse or your clinical instructor and learn how develop care plans, give medications, perform assessments, chart, perform procedures (IV insertion, NG tube placement, insert foley catheters, change wound dressings etc). Any job will be good during nursing school (of course I would try to pick something that require you to work in a hospital)...phlebotomy is a great job for nursing students. The key to not getting overwhelmed while working and going to nursing school is to make sure you don't work too much. I suggest you work either part-time or PRN (as needed) so you can give the most time to your studies.

Hi Sarah! I'm trying to get some experience in nursing fields I'm interested in since I know it will help for job applications later on after I graduate. I'm considering mainly between cardiac and labor/delivery, but leaning towards cardiac only because it's more of a "general" medicine than l/d. Would you agree from your experiences? I just dont want to go into l/d as a new grad if I'll end up moving specialties, since I feel like I'll only really know the female reproductive system (at least in cardiac I would still see other types of patients).

ok. Also what is the difference between step down nurse in cardiac and nurses in the cardiac care unit. I think I'm leaning more forward on to being a step down nurse. Am I able to work as a step down nurse I finish school? and I start my cna classes in September, after I finish my cna can I also work in a cardiac unit as a cna?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 лет назад
A step-down unit is a unit that cares for really sick patients but they are not sick enough to be in the ICU. A step-down unit will provide with you some excellent experience, and yes you can work on it after you finish school and as a CNA. A cardiac care unit is a unit that takes care of specifically cardiac patients (everything for hearts attacks, to congestive heart failure, to heart valve problems).

I would do the following: perform cardiac stress tests, place heart monitor, assist the doctor with transesophageal echocardiograms, cardioversions, and tilt table tests, and perform cardiac stress echocardiograms. I have to say it was one of the best jobs I've ever had. Hope that helps!

Thanks alot..I'm now in school for nursing. so you're saying when I get into my clinicals that I should focus on cardiology?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 лет назад
+Latece Keyes You're very welcome :) Yes, definitely! Try to absorb everything you can while in clinicals...paying attention to common cardiac drugs, drips, procedures ordered, diseases and how the present clinically. You will notice that while doing clinicals that most patients have cardiac problems. I don't know if your program does this but usually during your senior year you get to pick where you want to do your clinicals (senior practicum) and I suggest you try to pick a cardiac ICU or progressive care floor as your top choices.

do you know the name of the nurse that takes care of the patients after open heart surgery. I think that's what I want to do..i want to be the nurse that takes care of the patients after surgeries.

These nurses work in intensive care units that focus on caring for open heart patients. You will not only care for open heart surgery patients but other types of cardiac procedures like carotid endarterectomies and other vascular procedures They are cardiac nurses with critical care experience. So, look for jobs in large hospitals on intensive care units that specialized in open heart or transplant surgery. Note, not all hospitals perform these procedures so make sure you apply to a hospital that does.

Are you still a noninvasive nurse, or are you in another specialty in nursing?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 лет назад
+Latece Keyes No, I am now teaching and absolutely love it. Noninvasive is a great career though and you would probably find it very interesting! If you plan on going into it I recommend that you first work on a cardiac unit to develop a foundation for cardiac nursing because working noninvasive requires you know a lot about the heart. For example, you will need to know how to interpret rhythms, analyze EKGs, be comfortable with sedating patients, how to handle code blue situations, and how to administer and monitor cardiac drips. I hope that helps! Happy New Year!

Thank you very much for watching the video. I suggest that you contact NCLEX directly by visiting their website...it has a lot of information that will help answer your questions. Here is the website: www.ncsbn.org/nclex.htm If you look at the left side of the site, you will see "application and registration" and that should help you figure out how to apply as a foreign student. Best wishes.

so which do you think is better after school, working in cardiac care unit or step down nurse?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 лет назад
Personally, both are absolutely great and it really depends on what you want to do. During nursing school, I would try to get placed in one of these settings and see how well you like it and ask yourself "Can I see myself working here?" Best wishes, Latece :)
