Let's talk cardstock basics + how to cut card base and layers and get all your questions answered! This is part 3 of my Card Making for Beginners series.
Knowing cardstock basics is the 3rd essential item when making cards. We have already talked about stamps, ink...and now on to cardstock!
I get asked all the time, “how do you make card bases?”, or “How do I cut cardstock for cards?” Then there are the questions about the difference in Stampin’ Up!’s ‘regular’ whisper white cardstock vs. thick whisper white. Let’s chat about all of that today.
Cardstock Basics: How to Cut Card Bases, Layers & More ~ This video is filled with cardstock cutting tips that will help all of you beginner card makers, and hopefully teach you something new if you have been paper crafting for awhile. I throw out lots of numbers, and it may be confusing, but watch to the end as I think it will all come together and make sense.

I am still binge watching only because we are leaving our snowbird S. Texas home for our Missouri home this week. We live in a house in the woods on a river and do not have access to intranet, barely any phone service. So I’ll miss your upbeat videos but will watch when I can and look forward to catching up this Fall. Thanks so much for all of your tutorials. Time to pack up my toys for the trip back North.

"mountain in the middle" is the only way I can remember that the ridge goes inside the card, Jackie. Thanks for the great tips, as usual.

I'm anxious to go find your other videos. You always manage to explain things well (even if in this case it took a minute to get around it). I know I'd get myself tongue tied trying to talk it through. I have to say it's nice to see you have an imperfect moment, because it just helps to show we're all human and it can happen. I have to admit, some rulers confuse me with lots of lines in between vs just a few. And I don't read them well. I usually count X number of lines past a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4.

This has been so helpful, thank you so much. I haven't made cards for years, and thought I'd start again, and for the life of me, I couldn't work out how to measure for the bases and layers. And the folding after scoring was helpful too, as I think I used to fold the wrong way. Awesome, thanks so much.

To make a 5X7 card you would ned a 10 x 7 piece of cardstock. That is not a size I typically make, but I am working on a blog post showing lots of different cards size options.

Oh my goodness. I have never heard that before. But I can't stop laughing now!! 😁😅🤣🤭
@hollylowery26

Because the whisper white & lvory card stock are designed to be much smoother than all of the other stampin up cardstock. Your little saying is only true for the cardstock. The whisper white and ivory get to hump outside. It is a much denser paper but that's all I remember.

I have always had issues with the fold. I usually just score then fold without flipping so it folds towards the valley, however I find depending on the cardstock I sometimes get cracks on the fold. I just paused your video and did a few folds on dark cardstock and folded to the mountain side and valley side. I found that folding to the mountain side does seem better. I must remember to take this extra step. Thanks.

I never seem to have even edges when I fold my cards even with correct measuring and scoring tools - what am I doing wrong?
@KlompenStampersJackieBolhuis
Gosh, I don't know. Make sure you are measuring correctly. Maybe try not scoring and just match the edges when you fold it over, then use the bone folder to get a nice crisp edge.
