The achilles tang is often described as on of the most difficult fish to keep in the reefing hobby. I disagree with that statement, but they do have some very specific needs that has to be meet for you to be successful with keeping them.

Many people want to keep this fish, but not many are willing to minimise their scapes to allow for more open space for swimming and feed the fish 6 times a day. I just subscribed and can't wait for more videos. Your fish are lucky to be in your care.

Thanks man! You are indeed correct about that. Trying to fit a square peg in to a round hole just won’t work with these guys!

6 times a day? I only feed once a day.

Great Video! It might be good to include tips on choosing a good specimen that will have success in the tank. Also for food is there any specific other thank Nori and algae pellets? Do you know of some products you have had good success with? How do you keep their color looking bright and healthy? Really interesting to hear how important aquascape is for these fish.

When it comes to choosing a fish I would say the number one thing is that it’s not emaciated. Look at its face for pinching behind the eyes. Number two would be to check its skin for any scrapes or signs of disease. If the importer housed these guys together there’s a good chance they’ve been trying to kill each other. My guys have eaten mostly everything I’ve offered: mysis, krill, clams, oysters, angel formula, masstick, nori, formula two flakes, different NLS pellets, brine shrimp, frozen formula one and two. I believe algae plays a key factor in them keeping their color. Yeah, the aquascape bit is way to often overlooked in my opinion, not just for this fish.

Real interesting topic, please go through all of your fish like that. For how long have you had this specific fish? Was he tiny when you got him? Did you just look out for Achilles Tangs and when they had them in stock you would check out if they were interesting to you or did you order them and then say you weren’t interested if you didn’t like the specific fish? That’s a tough one. I feel like if I ask the local fish store to take in a fish I need to take it… Do you plan on adding more fish to your new tank or just let the ones you have continue to grow? When you do get new ones, do you quarantine them? If so, please make a video some time of how you quarantine your fish. Great video by the way. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve had it for a little over a year I think. It was about 2/3 the size when I got it. I ordered it but I wouldn’t accept anything that looked less than 100% I will definitely add more fish. I’ve got som interesting species planed hehe. I don’t do a traditional medicated quarantine but I do have a observation/conditioning tank. However, sensitive fish will go straight in the DT as that’s how I’ve had the most success.

I concur, specifically the idol. Ive had success with 3 in the same tank but never 1 by itself. Getting them to eat is always rough

@@dcsj30 interesting, I’ve never managed to keep several together without them eventually trying to kill each other.

Good tips. I want to get one for my new 400gallon sps reef. Flow and space shouldn't be an issue though I feel a 1000gallon+ would be more ideal

Nice fish. I have a powder blue. Wish I had a copperband too, but afraid the blue will fight it. Tank looks great.

Thank you! There will definitely be some initial chasing that’s for sure but I think it could be done using the mirror trick and perhaps rescaping a bit to change the territory.
