Eva B is a Train Driver for First ScotRail. It's not something she planned to be, in fact she went through university and into a job without having any plans at all. But her boyfriend persuaded her to apply to be a train driver and she took to it. Now she's thinking of becoming a full-time instructor. Highlights at icould.com/vide...

I've always wanted to be a train driver ever since childhood but it was bullied out of me in school, for some reason liking trains is 'weird', but now at 27 and never having a real job or knowing what I want to do in life I'm coming back around to the trains and putting some serious thought into chasing my dream job from childhood. The training is very long, 9-12 months I have heard, but the great thing is that even as a trainee the pay is excellent. Should I chase my dream job and try to make a huge change in my life?

That was such an uplifting comment, thank you. I am in the interview/assessment process for my first real job now but I am already seeing it as only temporary until I figure out what I really want to do, hopefully if I keep applying for jobs on the trains I might get lucky! I think bus driving would suit me too, it's in the blood, both my parents and most of their friends were bus drivers. I've seen the Swedish railways on TV, the scenery is amazing. I say if you still want to do it when you turn 21 go for it! Good luck to you too.

MickMaan interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover how do i get a job on the railway try Elumpa Railroad Jobs Alchemist (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got cool results with it.

VandaliZm Does anyone have an idea of how likely is it that Train Driver will be an obsolete career and how soon in the future as an estimate? With driverless cars, trucks, transport in general to come in the near future, this might be a very likely issue to face.

WCephei77HD Very true! The London Docklands light railway is automated. No drivers. Automation is killing jobs all over the place. My guess is within a decade only the low-profit rail companies will be offering people jobs.

Yes that is correct the training is about 9-12mths.I work for southeastern in Kent on the hst,Ramsgate to St pancrass

I need a new career and train driving is something that I keep coming back to. The only real concern is whether it becomes boring very quickly after qualifying. Does driving the same stretch of track (albeit 100's of miles worth) become too monotonous.

WCephei77HD also they will most likely be introduced overtime as drivers drop off from retirement ect due to the massive cost of firing your work force.
