Careful! 2012 (2012-2016) Subaru Impreza Crosstrek Front Differential Fluid Change - You can really cause damage. I really learned why in this video: • Subaru XV 2012 - Be ca... - one problem, he says driver's side - that's the passenger's side in the US. Good Luck!

8mm with 3/8 x 1/2 adapter and a few long 1/2 extensions laid on top of caliper. Give it a few good raps with a big hammer to shock the plug. With your breaker bar in the 9 o clock position and the extension supported by the caliper crank down on the breaker bar. It will snap loose. Same with the drain plug underneath. Pretty loud snap noise when they give. By the way, the drain plug is a T70 torx, make sure you have one.

Thank you for sharing this video, I was able to perform these services front and rear differential gear fluid change and avoid the potential big pitfall on the front with the guidance you provide for the 2013 Subaru Impreza of my daugthers, and save some money in the process. Most appreciated!

Great video. Did the same on a 2015 Crosstrek yesterday. Could not get the 8 mill fill plug open even with an extension and a breaker bar. In the end we used a plastic pump to fill the cavity via the check port...just fed the tube up the cylinder as far as possible and pumped the fluid in until it was obviously at the top of the check cylinder...about 1.5 quarts on the Crosstrek. In the future I’ll just do it the same way - then there’s no need to mess with that hard to access fill point.
@Den4Nk
@Den4Nk 5 лет назад
I tried to open 8mill Fill plug today and had no luck, it's too tight . I will try to do it the way you did it. Fill it thru overfill plug and leave Fill plug alone.. Thank you for the information btw, I wasn't sure if I can do it this way. For everybody's info, I got 2017 Outback 2.5 and it got the same exact design.
@speedracer9627
@speedracer9627 5 лет назад
Denis Tiscenco. Good luck. I found the alternate procedure quite easy - so it can all be done from underneath. The plastic tube from the pump goes up into the cylinder maybe 4 or 5 inches then you’ll hit the “top”...where the shaft curves 90 degrees into the cavity at that point. As you pump you might get some small % run back down the tube that you can maybe recapture in a clean pan. It’ll be obvious when it’s full - that’ll be when everything you pump comes right back down...:-). Hopefully this simplified procedure works just as well with your make/model as it did with the 2015 Crosstrek xv.

I love my 2010 outback setup. There is a drain plug, check plug n under the hood the left side of the engine there is a vent hose (used to be where a dip stick was) with a rubber/plastic fitting that says diff when u pull it out that looks almost like a pcv valve but obv hollow. U yank that n fill until it drips out of the check n ur done. Dont jam it in through the check hole theres no need

Sludge on the plug is normal. I always scrape it off and rub it around with my fingers to feel for large/gritty deposits.

Our mail carrier had a Subaru but with the driver's seat where the passenger seat would be like it would be in Australia and other places than the USA. She has used that vehicle since 25 or 30 years ago when we first moved here. Now they are using the white trucks that many people may see.

Its a good thing to know. It is stupid they did things this way but people need to pay attention to model changes every year. Those people that automatically do a job without consulting their manual need to stay way from cars. Any good mechanic worth is salt reviews his work. As far as torque. The plug should be tightened as nessary but the check plug on the side can just be snugged. As the Austrialian said, its a fill plug it shouldnt need to be real tight anyways.

@IronAndDiesel
@IronAndDiesel Год назад
Fair warning about over tightening, over torquing the plugs! You are dealing with steel plugs and an aluminum case. Many have stripped the differential or CVT threads. I almost did trying to torque the front differential overflow tube plug to spec. Not worth it. Tighten enough and call it good.

Thanks for the great video. Just did my wife’s car this weekend. Getting those bolts undone for the first time was fun. And the big cut on my knuckle appreciates it but never the less it’s complete. Where do you find the best jacking point is on the front? And then putting the stands after. I jacked it up on the punch weld but then obviously couldn’t use that for the jack stand.
@haywoodyoudome
@haywoodyoudome 4 года назад
On the Impreza there's a jack point behind the oil pan. You'll need a low profile high lift jack to get to it. users.sisna.com/ignatius/subaru/mods/jack/frt_jack.jpg

is the camera a tad funky or does that extension have a slight bend in it? I noticed it around 2:35. That one on the CVT that appears to be differential should be marked like the other ones. I have never seen such a confusing vehicle. I wonder how many people do the differential and accidentally kill the CVT.
