I'm a retired Home Health Aide, you only get basic training it's not easy. I don't know how things are now but we had in-service once a month and got paid. Personal care aide once a year and Home Health Aide twice a year, mandatory. But we went every month to get the training we needed. We we're blessed to have excellent NURSES, they were our biggest mentor and I going back to the late 1970,80 and 90 some things has changed in training not to much. I enjoy working with my patients and so family members. I took care of Teachers and Teachers Family members, Doctor's, Nurses and Lawyer's. I learn so much from my patients. But what I love the most getting advice from the Doctors and Nurses and the respect. One nurse told us she wish she was a Aide first then went to school to be nurse, she told us to take advantage of the exposure and the written test would be easy. The Dr told me to never change because I had patience and never change I had one nurse her mother inlaw had DEMENTIA and she taught me how to work with her mother inlaw. That's why I love my job as HHA.😊

If the patient can do that much for himself the transfer is easy. I need to find tips on how to transfer them when they’re NOT able to help.

Currently providing home care for my wife who has already been in a wheelchair with a disability. One point you MIGHT have included was to assure that the patient's FEET are on the foot pedals. True, some patients might not need them; they might either 'walk' along as they are being pushed or rolling on their own, but they might not be able to.

I use pedals for my mom as she easily slides and the pedals "somewhat" provides that support or hold.

i think you need to check the wheelchair if its lock before you procced and also on the lower part of the patient while in the wheel chair check the foot rest if its the leg is in the right position..

YOU LEFT OUT TWO MAJOR STEPS; FIRST , MAKE SURE WHEELCHAIR IS LOCKED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TRANSFER, 2ND MAKE SURE FOOT RESTS ARE OVER TO THE SIDE AND OUT OF THE WAY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TRANSFER

Ummm... there definitely weren't any foot rests on the w/c. You definitely want to make sure the wheelchair is locked and also it would have made more sense to bring the w/c closer and do a stand pivot. If the person is needing mod assist for the transfer, no reason to have the wheelchair clear across the room.

It takes three family members to move my mom who weighs 117 pounds but when the hospice gal comes in she can do it with one move. Family members need to know how to move a body without injuring the patient or themselves. How about a video showing how to move a combatant dementia patient because that would be a realistic video. This was not helpful at all.
@chrissyj4702
@chrissyj4702 3 года назад
I agree 100% I'm just starting out and the patients can barely stand let alone pivot to the wheelchair but I see others do it and they just have tricks that are nowhere to be found in any of these videos

Wouldn't it be easier to move the top part of the bed to an upright position when getting the person out of bed?
@bellegreycats490
@bellegreycats490 4 года назад
No, because of weight distribution. You want them to participate in moving and the weight of the body is transferred not to the buttocks, but to the lower back, and that is not the correct way to transfer a person from “sitting” they have a better chance at sliding if the weight is not on the buttocks where it belongs in transferring position.
@browneyez4069

That's right, position the feet , raise the head of the bed to whatever is tolerated by the pt., then swing the feet..etc.
