Careless Capybara gets Caught by Jaguar

Jaguars in the Pantanal, in Brazil, feed mainly on caiman crocodiles, but they do catch Capybaras from time to time. In this incredible sighting, the Capybaras were just too close to the Jaguar to resist, and she got her timing spot on. The Capybara made a mad dash for the river, but ultimately came up short, and despite an amazing effort, succumbed to the strength and sheer power of the Jaguar.

me too. first time i've seen a capybara killed by jaguar. I'm pretty sure it happens more often than not, but on camera, we mostly see the failed hunts

It was because right before it got into the water, it was the mud really slowed down capy's progress into the water. Had the soil been hardened, capy would have got away.

You are right. Their only weakness they don't work as well in team like hyenas. Only lions seem to use their numbers to their advantage. Most other cats are lone predators.

I think the Capybara wasn't careless. They simply don't have enough natural predators. That's why they are super chill (just like sea cows/ manatees). I have seen large group of Capybaras chasing off Jaguars but only when they are in large groups. Small groups don't usually have enough attackers to grow fear in them (or change the algorithm of their dna to grow survival instincts).

Read that Jaguars have the strongest bite force of any big cat. They're often confused with Leopards, but more heavily bodied. A large male Jaguar can weigh around 215-220 pounds, whereas a large male Leopard weighs in at around 185 pounds. Don't remember where I read this, but think it was wikipedia.

Pound-for-pound only. Tigers and Lions still surpass Jags due to the 2 being larger/more massive. Unfortunately, the Jags bite force, while powerful, has been exaggerated by random websites which all copy-pasted the "1500psi-2000psi" Jaguar bite claim. If you notice the websites who claim that, none of them had references of where they got the bite force, which Jaguar, when the test was made, who are the scientists involved, how the test was done, etc...

Why are people so surprises? You can't be yourself when you are hungry, so why are you expecting a Jaguar not being a house cat when it isn't full? Most Capybara you see, sitting peacefully with Jaguar, is because the Jaguar already had a Capybara 1 hours before.

So if these cat develops an instinct of not actively attack those rodent, the rodent will develops an almost normalized relationship with these cat, as in don't actively see them as dangers.
