The amazing thing about this movie is that being in drug recovery myself (for heroin) 14 months sober, and I used for 10 years (now 31) -- and when I saw Shame, there was such great parallels to drug addiction as he struggles with sex addiction. So many of the same things that alcoholics and drug addicts do in desperate times in the film they show him struggling quite closely to what all addicts feel. Drugs, sex, alcohol, food, or codependency addiction is addiction and this movie was amazing.
as she's singing, New York becomes his brother... if she can make it there, she can make it anywhere. she wants to be a part of his life. she wants to make a brand new start but he doesn't let her, it's up to him... Sissy always falls in "love" with people who cannot love her back and the reason she has relationships like that is Brandon. on the other hand, Brandon is never satisfied with his love life because he can't be together with the one he wants, Sissy. oh god, this was such a saddening, deep movie.
She's sad. She's an adequate singer. The lyrics mirror her aspirations. The slow tempo forces you to pay attention to the lyrics. These little town blues (back in Ireland), are melting away. I'll make a brand new start of it in old New York~~ No they're not. The blues has followed them to the new, big city. She's gagging for love and affection. She's suffering. Fassbender feels those lyrics because Brandon suffers in his desolation and Fassbender is an artist himself. He moved to a big city to start an acting career. This song speaks to an artist. Brandon feels the pain of childhood trauma and Sissy is a reminder. Fassbender was a struggling actor and might have felt those lyrics. So he sheds a real tear because they're (Brandon and Sissy) both suffering and lonely in the big city.
The song is too slow as is the film in many ways. The story does not unfold through speed; it piles up slowly and settles. Even so, I could have found myself sleeping to it, too, if I was not emotionally invested in the protagonist. I feel it is important to watch this scene with all the scenes before it and after. Though I like it alone as a stunning interpretation of Sinatra's classic.

this scene says a lot !!! She is so sad while singing ''I wanna wake up in a city that doesn't sleep. And find I'm king of the hill...Head of the list '' It is kinda depressing. Her brother kinda feels guilty for her. We can see anger in his eyes. It's so intimate and sad. Great movie, great performances.
I watched this movie almost a year ago and LOVED this scene. Then I watched this video over and over and fell in love with everything in the scene espacially Carey Mulligan herself. She was so perfect for the movie and the song. I'm watching it again and I forgot the emotion from the movie and the scene became so boring. Now I understand that you need to become into the movie a little bit to be fond of the scene. I still love it.
This scene was shot entirely in real-time - all three actors were being filmed at the same time, one take. It was the first time Dale and Fassbender had heard Carey sing. Their reactions are beautiful.
Fun Fact: Carey's performance and Michael's reaction were filmed at the same time with two seperate cameras.. so this was his actual reaction as it was happening live and he was seeing it for the first time. It also wasn't in the script that he was supposed to cry, that was just his natural reaction because he was so moved by her performance and they decided to leave it in and make it a part of the movie.

There is no way that anybody could have gotten through this maudlin version of the song without being stepped on by an after work New York audience. At best they would have broken in to applause during one of her pregnant pauses as a sign to end it. I love C.M. and she has a fine voice, but they should have edited this scene.
This scene was a little bit boring. The song was interpreted really awful, starts to be stronger and before it gets a high, it fell down back and again. I like Shame, but this was boring. And afterswards Fassbender cry, I think the director wanted to show, that he's not a cold-monster, that devour women one after the other, but this whole scene was one of the less good in this great movie.
this movie was robbed of so many awards. NC17 shouldn't be the Bane of ratings. Maybe we should have more great NC17 films fill up the market place and show that the Rating isn't so scary. This movie had amazing acting, Lovely cinematography and sharp direction and a sold nuanced script.
I totally disagree. The emphasis on various words and the momentum completely evokes an entirely different emotion. As you said, it gets stronger, gets high and falls back down - much like a person's hopes and desires to follow their dreams. That initial unstoppable drive, met with all the challenges and lack of fruition of those dreams, leaving that dreamer still somewhat hopeful but perhaps a bit skeptical about the possibilities they once thought were possible

She is an awesome talent, performing one of the loveliest songs ever and the public still walked all over her performance. As for McMakisha's well received comment that the reactions were real, let me remind him/her that it took Carey 16 takes to get the shot . Their reactions were in the script. .......... P.S. I disagree. She didn't just sing the song, she sang it honestly. Take it from a seasoned musician, that just doesn't really happen nowadays. An honest performance trumps vocal technique EVERY time. In this scene, not only was Sissy giving an honest performance, but Carey too, as always. I truly believe that everyone in that room that day, cast and crew, had to have been moved. Every lyric of that song connected to something in Brandon and Sissy's past, and Carey expressed that... to perfection.
I think that single tear is not for his sister, but for both of them. There is some very very sad paid they both share from their childhood in New Jersey. Perhaps as children, they used to look at the Manhattan skyline from their broken Jersey home and dream of escaping their pain. Something which is never realized. Perhaps they even shared this song as part of that hope. Hence the tear.
I've never loved too much this song, too classic, too standard, but this version, this outstanding version, this crazy piano arrangement, this right imperfect voice, well, what can I say... bye bye Frank, Liza... Now, I love this song...
I had tears in my eyes the first time I watched it, I have tears in my eyes now, so poignant and sorrowful, carey mulligan is one in a million, her and michael were amazing in this, she's one of the reasons I want to see the remake of the great gatsby that's coming out, even though I've never read or seen the story. Bravo carey

the character is expressing her shattering dreams with this song, fassbender in character ofc is moved and touched by it that he has to cry about his sad sad sister scene with much intensity, rly love it, well done by performers
When that tear rolled down his cheek, I imagined him already holding that golden statue, thanking his parents and the crew of the film. Boy, was I wrong... was I fucking wrong.
I can't believe Fassbender didn't won the Golden Globe, or the fact that he didn't even get an Oscar nomination for his AMAZING performance in Shame. The Academy completely ignored this movie.
I dunno, I think a late-night New York crowd might go in for this kind of artistic, downer rendtion; they'd find it chic and edgy, as long as it was given to them in small doses.
Heh, I don't know... I like Carrey and all but come on! She's got no voice for such a song, and slowing the tempo down THAT much just doubled the challange...
