It’s not really defunct. It’s just under collective management. NS still letters its diesels with little letters under the road number. These are either for N&W, SOU, CR, or NS

Smart choice, the Norfolk & Western railroad was the King of Steam locomotives. They built the vast majority of their own steam locomotives, my favorite steam locomotives are the Norfolk & Western J class 4-8-4 number 611, the Southern Pacific GS-4 Lima built 4-8-4 number 4449 which I have the Kato N scale of it & the Morning Daylight set which is my model railroad excursion train & the AC-12 4-8-8-2 Baldwin built cab forward steam locomotive number 4294 which is on display at the California state railroad museum in Sacramento-those are my 3 most favorite steam locomotives of all time.

Ill have them build me a y6b articulated loco. And a little circut to run the loco

yea I heard, and throttle time too, and its cheaper priced then throttle time with 765, at the cayahoga scenic railroad, though both are a rare and expensive propisition for most, 765 just by being a voleenter there, as I live 40 miles from her hq in new haven indiana I have been in every part of that loco but the actual boiler, I been in the firebox, cab, smoke box, tender tank, coal bunker, and under her when I had to help collect oil samples last year, that was a messy proposition, I even got to help bank the fire 2 times at the open house and throw a bit of coal, a hand full of times but usually such things are practice for the actual crew in trainning, before firing on trips, and the cab on a late summers day is a hot place to be, but what a rare rare occurance in this day and age with amtrak being the way it is, new restorations starting up all the time, though with the tight timetables the railroads run its not the halcron days of the 1990's and before, heck even the new river train is canceled this year, due to rising costs, and that was the last mainline excursion on the east side of the usa, 54 years running, they still want to do it but it wont happen this year, that is to say they still want it to happen and so does amtrak but they could not meet in the middle to make it happen for this year not the way it is.

@@penginator89 yeah when I made this comment, this was actually before the East Palestine disaster, so you can chalk it up to a change of views since then. Perhaps Norfolk Southern in the early days could’ve been more fitting of what I said in the first comment but I can’t say for sure as I don’t know much of how railroads were in the 1990s and the 1980s. Hopefully stuff like the east Palestine disaster will prove that greater regulation for safety is needed and will hopefully end PSR because if stuff like that keeps happening, I can bet you that the government will basically tell the railroads to shape up or they might threaten to nationalize them in order to get them to do what they’re supposed to. that being said, I do think Norfolk Southern definitely is capable of being improved so long as it learns from these mistakes.
