Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Time-lapse of a nearly 1000 foot Container Cargo Ship arriving and docking in Antwerp, Belgium. This is one of the longer pilotages on this ship's current route and typically takes around 5 hours or more including a pilot changeover.
Filmed using the GoPro Hero 8 Black.

Being from belgium I frequently drive my Chevy Van out to the abandoned town Doel besides the nuclear powerplant you see in the video. I spend many hours sitting at the water looking at these majestic ships coming into port. This is the best video I’ve ever seen mainly because of the other point of view, now I see it from the ship instead of from shores. You’ve got a new subscriber, keep it up! 😎

Great video, I'd have to look at a chart of Antwerp, a very big port.

Wow, that was long to get into port. Like going down a highway. Would have been nice to watch them unload for a while too. Hope you get to leave or go to another port during the daylight hours. thanks. :-)

Thanks again John. While everyone loves to visit Antwerp, the pilotage in can be a drag having to spend so much time on the bridge. These videos were all recorded on my last trip, but when I go out next I plan on following the advice of yourself and some other viewers and incorporate more of the cargo unloading and loading. Whether we go in during the day or night is unfortunately out of my control but I hope to have more daylight transits in the future! Take care

Hey man! I’m trying to get into the industry! Did you go to a maritime school? Any tips or tricks on getting a job on a ship? Love the vids keep it up!

Yea I went to the US Merchant Marine Academy (King’s Point). It is a federal service academy which requires a commission in the military reserves while working in the maritime industry or to go active duty in any branch. There are other state maritime academies which do not require military service including Maine Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime, SUNY, Texas A&M, Cal Maritime, and Great Lakes (although many students there do participate in ROTC programs). These are all 4 year colleges where you can graduate as a Third mate or third engineer. Kings point has age limits for starting since you will be in the military. The other academies I believe you can start later in life. Those are the best ways to become a maritime officer in my opinion. The other route is becoming an unlicensed AB. You won’t get paid as much, have as good of benefits, and less responsibilities, but the path to getting on a ship will be much quicker. From there you can build sea time over the years and work on getting your license by taking courses at various maritime schools around the country such as MITAGS in Baltimore. Some unlicensed unions even have AB to Mate programs where they will help cover the cost of classes. I highly suggest you check out the website www.gcaptain.com. This is the website I advise anyone interested in the maritime industry to check out as it answers most questions people have. Check out that website and let me know if you have any questions from it. Good Luck!

Your best video ever, what are you using to record?

Trump 2020 thanks for the support! The time lapses are done on a GoPro Hero 8. While I really enjoy this camera, it does lack a bit with low light conditions due to a smaller image sensor.

Bryan Boyle thanks, I thought the optics were excellent, picked up all the lights very well made it more natural.
