As the father of the skipper of SV Auryn, the first cruising boat to drop fuel and food, I feel compelled to add a few comments. My son and family, including our two grandsons, were on the same route to Nuku Hiva as Travis and family. They have been on their boat for over a year, down from SoCal to Mexico and then to French Polynesia and beyond. I have not lost a single night's sleep worrying about them; I don't worry about school mass shootings, or my grandsons exposed daily to rampant drug use. A few here have decried taking a family to sea as reckless and not worth the risk. We ALL live with risk every day. Consider that we rarely think twice about driving 75 mph on the freeway with the baby strapped in the back; all the time subject to immediate disaster if another driver makes a mistake. Families continue to live in Tornado Alley with their small children. Families in the Northeast drive in minus zero temperatures with their children in the car. Even just staying home is a risk, as we here in the greater SF Bay area know by the ever present, and unannounced earthquake that could kill thousands in a minute.

Courage under duress is indescribable. The courage to continue forward after a catastrophe is admirable. Camaraderie of mariners is heartwarming. This episode has so much in it to take in.

That was a tear jerker. I have to say that little baby is soooo cute. What an epic story, I am glad he stayed with his boat and bought her back to port. Thanks for sharing this adventure/rescue/safe landing with us all. I hope they get more than enough donations to get their rig back up and continue their journey to the South Pacific. Safe and epic journey to you all.

The human race never ceases to amaze me. To quote one of my favorite lines of all time: "Humans are at their best when times are at it's worst." May God continue to bless not only this family but everyone involved with helping this amazing family.

And captain, you are the best example those boys could possibly have. A man doesn't quit his home. He protects it, saves it, and motors it to a safe harbor against all the odds. Beauty in action. I was sailing in the same storm. We heard about this couple through a friend we were in touch with that was in PV. We were 2 days SSW of Socorro. I can only imagine what they were dealing with because at our position it was 8-10 foot waves at a period of 10-11 seconds! I noticed they mentioned they assumed the rig was good because it was serviced by the previous owner. You have to check this before you leave!

Fabulous storytelling Colin. And what a brave and resourceful man; geez… a true hero! Not a dry eye in this house either! (boat)

Standard equipment for passaging can and should include a jury-rig. A stowable mast, sail, stays, sheet, running rigging as an alternate in case of dismasting. A spinnaker pole can serve dual purpose as an emergency mast or steering arm/tiller for emergency rudder. One that can be fashioned from a floor board or other panel material. All this can be pre-fabricated as redundancy for emergency use. The video does not point out the root cause of the rig failure. Did the traveler rip out of the deck? Did a block fail? Once the boom was loose it seems likely that it impacted the shroud(s) which may have led to the dismasting.

What an amazing story. It’s also a tremendous reminder of the realities ocean sailors face. The reality is, it’s not all Champagne sailing, Beach BBQ’s and dock parties. Offshore sailing and ineed crossing oceans is a serious endeavour. The minute the lines are thrown at the dock for any ocean or coastal voyage you, the crew and the boat need to be ready to handle something like this (and pretty much anything else nature and the universe can throw at you). Thank you Parlay for sharing this sailing reality check! I wish Travis and Shawna all the best in their quest to restart their adventures. I will be doing my bit to help the them along via their go fund me! Last but not least…….. Wow! What a great and inspirational story!

Colin and everybody, take this story as a warning. This gentleman trusted the seller, an 'engineer', that the rig was good. The seller is not going to tell you otherwise. Because of that the mast fell down. The standing rigging of EVERY sailboat needs to be replaced every ten years! YES, every ten years. And if you just purchased a used sailboat....Replace the rigging!! You cannot see the damage caused by electrolysis, tiny cracks just inside the fittings, invisible but there. Chainplates too, just where they disappear through deck. Take them out every twenty years. It's a lot of work but better than the mast falling over. Solid rod rigging on bigger boats is just as vulnerable, have them X-rayed for cracks. Sailing is not cheap, maintain your boat and sail safe. See you out there, Aloha, David.

Maybe I'm missing something but to me this is just stupid. Risking your life for a boat full of just stuff, leaving your wife and three small children to get rescued on a cargo ship by themselves. Don't get it. Kids don't care about stuff, but if they'd lost dad it would've scarred them for life.

I see people using words like Strong, Brave, Courageous. I would like to include the words Incredibly Stupid! Its one thing to live your life of adventure but why include your young kids in your search for adventure. Leave them at home or better yet don’t have them. I would consider this Incredibly Selfish!

I don't usual comment. But christ, I'm a young farther with an ambition of sailing but this video has reduced me to a crying mess. Don't cry usually but this really hit me, Unbelievable story telling from yourselves but what that man went through for his family is truly immense, not to mention the unbelievable kindness of the sailing community. Great job on the documentary- well executed. As a parent, I cannot comprehend taking young children and a baby on this kind of journey. Glad they made it off safe but still. Seems so risky and sounds like they were all very seasick.

I've never seen your channel before but had to click on it when I saw your thumbnail. Your story brought tears of joy to see your family back to gather. The generosity of the Mexican people as well as the people on the other boats that ran to help only proves one thing. Not all angles are above the clouds watching over us...some are in boats that travel the seas. Hillary's words ring true....it really does take a village.
