Carl Brashear overcame many obstacles in his Naval career. He was the first African-American to graduate from U.S. Navy Diving & Salvage School and the first African-American diver, rising to Master Diver after a rescue mission led to the loss of his leg. He was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in Men of Honor.
