OneMoreMileAnHour Have you ever been through the complete schooling of several dressage horses, from first level to Grand Prix and been through the actual learning of the use of a double bridle for many years under an experienced dressage trainer to guide and teach you for many years? Then you should not cut it down, because you don't know what you are cutting down. You would not understand the purpose or use of the double bridle. So here it is: the purpose of the double bridle is to further train the horse and refine the aids. When you have a snaffle bridle, it is like you can talk to the horse in one language. When you have a properly fitted and used double bridle, then you have two languages to speak to him with. It is as if you were doing ballet, but can't use your hands and arms. With the double bridle your conversation with the horse expands, and the horse's dialog with you also expands.

No I haven't! I've never even seen a Grand Prix dressage horse in real life! I don't claim to know anything about double bridles; the closest I've come to it is a Pelham with 2 reins, hence why I asked about them. That sounds great and I'm sure you're right but I still don't understand why she's riding him in a snaffle at home. Surely if that's the case she'd ride him in the double all the time, except maybe on hacks or soemthing?

OneMoreMileAnHour Also, there is no similarity between a pelham and a double bridle. The action is completely different. The pelham is not allowed in dressage competition and most dressage trainers are experienced and knowledgeable to not use it during training.

I asked a simple question, innocently trying to get a good answer and all I get is come pretentious twat replying like he's talking to a piece of shit. Just so you know, I do dressage at prelim level for fun and because I don't have transport and it's the only event near enough for me to hack to that's also on a day I don't work. I don't ever plan to get my horse to the level of riding in a double. I prefer jumping anyway. +OneMoreMileAnHour ..not necessary to use double when not in competition. In lower level dressage, horse is trained with snaffle, which can be used for at home work, or just hacking out. When the higher levels of training begin, more collection is necessary to compete. You can still ride in snaffle if you choose...but in competition...collection is easier in double..which still has snaffle.unlike pelham.

I think her point is that she didn't start out with tons of money. She wasn't the daughter of a millionaire that became an Olympian because daddy bought her the best horses. She worked hard until her talent was recognized, and now she is able to do what she loves for a career.

Again not true. Her first decent horse cost £18,000; money from her granny; they were not poor. Charlotte has ridden since a tiny child and she did not go to Carl Hester as some naive novice, she was already a very accomplished rider. Yes, she did work in the stables as well but she also got to ride a lot otherwise she never would have reached such an advanced level of dressage.

Yes, because worked hard to become an accomplished rider. Does getting picked up to ride with a professional somehow make you rich? Absolutely not. Her mom even did an article where she talks about how hard they worked to make sure their daughter could keep riding because she was talented. Buying a horse with inheritance money when her grandmother died hardly counts as proving that you need a lot of money to compete at high levels.

I completely agree. As soon as I went to college I didn't have a penny in my name and so I had to sell my horse and focus on school. For about 5 years my mom paid a cheap local barn to give me lessons and she bought me my own horse, but after a while it was obviously clear that I would have to stop. It still breaks every single bit of my heart that I can't ride anymore. I even started an official grooming business to try to make my own money and pay for everything but it went down hill and here I am. I lost my very best friend and my passion in life because I don't have Nearly enough money to do this sport.

Anjounet Leavell I had to give it up too, but i went to school, got a good job, and bought a horse. I went to school, worked hard at a job that paid well BECAUSE I wanted horses. Make it happen.

Nicola Kerslake Such ignorance. No horse can score well if spurs are used improperly - if spurs are improperly applied it affects everything in the training pyramid. Spurs are used to refine aids, not to cause 'shame' with their action.
