The reason for overlapping is outstanding. Have been playing for 43 years and have never heard the reason for it. The right hand covers the left thumb so it can 'take orders" from the left hand. So on the takeaway if the left shoulder starts the swing the left thumb pushes the right hand away without the right hand or shoulder taking over.
