This overture is a miracle of orchestral writing and of architecture. YES! And marvelous performance by the just-departed and sadly-mourned maestro Haitink.
Icimde, kalplerimizde yasayan Maria Puder' e ithafen ! 💕
People forget how esteemed Weber was. Wagner was a fan who learned from him, and Mendelssohn based his MSND Overture on a scene from Oberon's Act II Finale ("And hard, the mermaids...").
Haitink is superb with this masterpiece of the German Opera. A masterpiece of the whole German repertoire in fact, and that's saying an awful lot. Kudos to Haitink. I love how he tweaks the bass fiddles, just right, from 7:20 to that ensorceling passage at 7:44. Abracadabra. He makes a warm, quickening pulse. Perhaps Oberon, himself, flitted into Weber's bedroom to sprinkle fairy dust. And a pinch for Haitink, too. Magical enchantment.
I have to thank to Hellsing Ultimate for discovering Weber. I will not say that it's unfortunate that I discovered him through that anime, because it would be extremelly unfortunate to not discover him at all.
Hi--we corresponded about Balanchine awhile back--Nichols, Kent, Edwards. Stumbled on this Weber entry by chance. Thanks for posting--my favorite overture, hands down. And a great neglected opera.
The same holds for Mendelssohn with whom von Weber not just had a good personal relation but an astonishing similar musical sense cf. Mendelssohn‘s ‚A midsummer nights dream‘
More dynamic and ambitious than Der Freischutz, Weber come into this piece with coolness and happiness. I can sometimes notice the shapes of great composer from his cousin's husband, the genius W A Mozart; but always regarding his convenable difference.
The music and the performance are excellent. The comments are important but I can never understand why so many people comment in strange languages that only a very few can understand.
