Carl Perkins looks like a rockabilly Superman here, and what a fun, kind man, everyone seemed to love him, didn't they. The way he pumps up the band and guest stars is so selfless.
Carl Perkins was my cousin. We are related through my father's side and Carls mother. I never had the chance to meet him personally, but his wonderful life is an open book. ❤ I've always loved his music.
RIP Carl Perkins (April 9, 1932 - January 19, 1998), aged 65 RIP George Harrison (February 25, 1943 - November 29, 2001), aged 58 RIP Mickey Gee (July 3, 1944 - January 21, 2009), aged 64 You will be remembered as legends.
Underrated is a term I see way too much on youtube describing people that aren't underrated. However, underrated is a term that applies to Carl Perkins. What an extremely talented, humble and kind man. They don't make him like this anymore.
!!! RIP. Înger de om. !!!
Man, here i sit at age 55, i woulda been 18 when this was filmed, and til today, id never heard of it! Oh, Lord, how wonderful! My heart is fluttering, and im smiling with tears in my eyes. God bless all who made this possible! Amen!
The ultimate salute from the Beatles' generation to the Sun Studio generation, without whom the former would never have existed. Interestingly, the first time Harrison met Noel Gallagher, he asked him if he liked Carl Perkins. So, it's clear that Perkins was one of George's greatest musical influences, and therefore one of the Beatles' and of all of popular music. I feel like this was Carl at his absolute peak singing wise, One of the greats and no one ever stepped on his blue suede shoes!
The first time I saw Carl, he opened for Elvis, at the fair grounds, in Tupelo, Ms. That was the first time back, to Tupelo for Elvis, after he had become famous. My sister and I stood in line for 7 hours, and got a front row seat. One of the biggest thrills of my long life.
I am 19 years old. when I was 2 or 3 years old, my dad would put this show for me to watch and he says I used to stay on the couch in my diaper singing and dancing to all the songs. I liked Carl Perkins so much that I learned to put the DVD on just to watch this show... 17 years later I'm watching this and I get emotional, because my dream is to live from music and Carl Perkins is literally the first guy who I listened and loved listening in my life. thanks
Carl Perkins was one of a kind. Never got quite the recognition that he deserved. No other rockabilly artist can touch him. He had energy, rhythm, the voice and the guitar playing ability. I have listened to a lot of rockabilly over the years and it seems so natural to him where others have struggled to keep the beat and rhythm going. I miss him and would have loved to have been at one of his concerts. What an entertainer, just gets you tapping and moving. This is 37 years after this concert....Wow!
I agree, my father grew up listening to him in the 50's and I have since the 60's, his voice was fucking incredible, he was always smiling and moving around and having a fun time, he was fun to watch. His voice got better it seems as he got older especially in this concert, Carl Perkins is a legend in Rockabilly and will never be forgotten
No one is cooler than Carl Perkins. No one. What a fabulous guitarist, songwriter, singer and performer. Thanks for the memories Carl. Love them Blue Suede Shoes. So did Elvis' mom. RIP Carl.
When a list of the greatest rock n' roll performances of all time is compiled, this wonderful show must rank somewhere in the top ten. In my humble opinion, this might be the greatest rock n' roll performance from any era ever captured on camera. Perkins, Clapton, Harrison, and Starr somehow manage to sing and play better here than they have in the past 40 years! You can feel the electricity in every song as each performer rocks their hearts out with the great Carl Perkins at the peak of his talent. This fabulous show has rocked my soul since I first discovered it in my uncle's collection in 1996. Clapton's dynamite performance at 12:40 is simply the best rock n' roll he's played in decades!
It is great. This came up on autoplay after I played a 1956 live version of Honey Don't. I didn't expect the integrity. He sounds like Carl Perkins. He feels like him. He doesn't really look like the young guys but he hadn't lost a thing. The Beatles--maybe George and John the most--loved this kind of music, and that's to their credit. You can have the whole British invasion for all I care. Not too keen on any more invasions.
Uh, the drive under all those great front men would be slim Jim phantom on stand up trap and Lee rocker on upright bass (of the stray cats). There's a reason why it sounds so loose and tight both at the same time.
I agree. Been listening to him since his Cream days and seen some amazing guitar licks from him ( Derek & the Dominos ) but this concert is one of my all time favorites. He was definitely cookin there.
What was really great about this concert is that each musician actually looked humbled to play and really enjoyed themselves, even Carl at the end with that huge smile knew this came off really well.
The best part about this concert is that the guest artists - super duper stars in their own right - all appear to have not only wanted to have been there, but thankful to have been. And all seem to have had great admiration for Carl Perkins. Quite a statement for the gentleman.
Pure, unadulterated talent! The world will never, ever hear again such pure, raw music. The best has come and gone, all we have left is an appreciative audience. Pray that future generations will seek the 50-early 70's music.
You are very right!! There are many times in my life that, if I didn't have music, I prolly wouldn't be here. And there is nothing I know of that makes a person happy other than god old rock-a-billy and fantastic people playing it!!!
I've read most of the previous comments and agree with them all, what a turnout of muso's, rest in peace Mr Perkins your music lives on, you set the standard, brilliant.
Carl perkins put the rock in the roll!! What a concert! What a collection of talent! And i will bet you the farm that each & everyone of them idolized mr. Carl perkins!!
The absolute truth is, George usually loved playing with Paul and John . . . and ALWAYS loved playing with Eric and Carl. You can tell he loved every second of it.
I've seen this show now for about 50 times and I still like it very very much. What a great artists they are and what an amazing concert. Cannot get enough of it. Carl Perkins, you are amazing.
This music is so life affirming and rich in tune! A great reason to get up and move too! We need to grab on this goodness and remember we all danced! Wonderful to see this and long live Rock & Roll & Rockabilly
Truly a magical night of blissful rock n' roll that captures a vibe and spirit of pure joy like no other concert video I've seen. A masterpiece for the ages!
Really like Ringo's "Honey Don't", playing and singing. This is great. Haven't come across this concert before somehow. Like the guitar background, grinding but still harmonic. Grateful to those that filmed, recorded, and mixed this for us.
@@vayabroder729 To deny that elvis's critically acclaimed recordings were light years better, speaks volumes about your low IQ level. I love Carl, Johnny, jerry lee, etc...... But elvis's critically acclaimed recordings are at another level entirely.
@@bradhuskers I believe we have a communication problem and you are putting words in my mouth. Go back and re read and try to understand. And second; why do you feel the need to attack immediately? Do you feel inadequate in your life perhaps? I suggest you go in for psychological counseling. Good day.
I remember when this came out as a TV special. I still love it with all the great musicians playing with Carl who are having a blast & playing with one of their musical heroes. Great!!!!!!!!
Carl Perkins was the BEST ever!!! His soft, smooth delivery of rockabilly music glides right under your skin and makes you feet move whether you want them to or not,
You can tell George is in his element here. Of course he progressed as an artist, but playing good old rock n roll with a Gretsch guitar was home for him.
@@gabrielstatescu9039 That's exactly how they used to play the double bass in early rock n roll, starting with Bill Haley's great bass players - Marshall Lytle, Al Rex and Al Rappa.
Ever since Elvis released " Blue Suede Shoes " ahead of him, the business put Elvis ahead of him. I'd much rather hear Carl Perkins than Elvis Presley.
Hi all. I’ve watched this hundreds of times and appreciate every artist on the stage and the reverence they show mr Perkins but quite frankly mr Clapton bossed it as he always does when he has people he looks up to, it’s almost like he has a super sense that takes it to another level, no one matches him in this mood. I’ve seen him loads of times and sometimes he’s just on another planet. Thank you.
Carl influenced George. Meanwhile, a singer in Florence, Alabama influenced John and especially Paul (Paul said he wanted to be just like Arthur), John and Mick Jagger. His name was Arthur Alexander. Mick said when he heard Arthur's Anna Come To Him, he immediately wanted to record it. Unfortunately, Paul and John beat him too it so Mick chose another of Arthur's songs, You Better Move On, which was an immediate hit with Jagger's fanatical female legion. So yeah, Southern soul singers and Southern Rock-a-billy artists had the biggest influences over the greatest of the great.
@@kenperk9854 They were influenced by *ALL* the early American greats - Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Jimmie Rodgers, Duane Eddy, in addition to Carl Perkins -- and yes, this list includes Arthur Alexander.
Carl was only 53 here . Seemed older then that for some reason . He’s a legend who will hopefully will get the appreciation he deserves in years to come .
I know. I had just turned 18 when I watched the original broadcast of this on TV and remember thinking how great it was to watch this 'old' original rockabilly, who I'd only seen in black and white recordings. Now here I am at 53yo myself and the same age as Carl was then! He really wasn't that old at all.
This concert was really a great gig and a great event for Carl and everything due to George Harrison who gathered and inbolved a bunch of famous people , his friends, to honour his hero, Carl Perkins. George also sang True Love at his funeral.
Yes, Conny! Seems i once read that he was the musician co-ordinator & director for this. He's there on every song - but always playing acoustic rhythm rather than stretching out on an electric lead, which he is so renown for. A real team player here. Love this.
Not long after this Ringo started his ALL STAR BANDS and GEORGE started to record again and the WILBURYS got together so I'm sure this concert had a lot to do with it! A big thanks to CARL for that! They really ROCKED the NIGHT OUT HERE!
@Tessmage Tessera You need to brush up on your musical history. Ringo formed his All-Starr band in 1989 after he sobered up. He hadn't toured since 1966 - with The Beatles! "It Don't Come Easy" was his first hit single recorded in 1970 as a solo artist ... nothing more and nothing less.
Ringo Is fantastic, Can jump in and never miss a beat. Carl Perkins MADE Elvis, and all the rockers who came after him. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Doors, Rod Stewart, ALL!!!
