1977 Carl Sagan Christmas Lectures 2, about the outer solar system and life.
In his second Christmas Lecture, Carl Sagan travels beyond Earth to explore the possibility of life in outer space.
To find the answer, he looks back to the early stages of the development of our atmosphere. The hydrogen from this atmosphere has since escaped to space from Earth, but not from bigger planets like Jupiter. When the hydrogen-rich gases of the early Earth are mixed together and supplied with energy, the essential molecular building blocks of the proteins and nucleic acids are formed.
As Sagan suggests, although this process no longer occurs on Earth, such organic chemistry should be occurring in the outer solar system on Jupiter, and Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The NASA twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and 2, launched a few months prior to these Lectures in 1977, were sent to space to explore this hypothesis.

Carl Sagan was highly intelligent and educated, but I don't see why he should be seen as "the best thing humanity has produced". Elon Musk shouldn't even be mentioned at the same time. He's not a genius at all except for how he is marketing himself. He mostly buys things already invented by others and has had a great deal of luck. Botox and hair plugs..

Wow, so you wish your fool was still around today to spread more of his lies. Carl Sagan "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be." Carl Sagan, "I can’t imagine anyone denying the existence of the laws of nature, but I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky." More from the dumbass, "It’s perfectly possible that the universe is infinitely old and therefore uncaused. In fact, there are detailed cosmological models that hold such a view and that are consistent with everything we know. To my mind, it seems not fully satisfactory to say that there was a first cause. That seems to postpone dealing with the problem rather than solving it. If we say “God” made the universe, then surely the next question is, “Who made God?” If we say “God” was always here, why not say the universe was always here? If we say that the question “Where did God come from?” is too tough for us poor mortals to understand, then why not say that the question of, “Where did the universe come from?” is too tough for us mortals? In what way, exactly, does the God hypothesis advance our knowledge of cosmology? What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" from: www.uscatholic.org/articles/202001/god-and-carl-sagan-cosmos-big-enough-both-them-31939 Read the article. Have a vomit bag or trash can nearby for what a hypocritical, lying, mocking, disgusting, foolish person he was. Now, Carl the dumbass NEVER can get around these laws and what the lead to... Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. ....yet the buffoon thinks creation happened naturally, but the idiot says, "What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" as the crap-for-brains ignores the CLEAR science that creation had to happen by God supernaturally! Still the fool who ignores the laws farted out, "I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky." Notice his mocking God, "man in the sky" as if that makes him look smart as he completely ignores the evidence. His question, "Who made God?" is as dumb as he is. So in his way of foolish thinking, if a supernatural creator created the natural realm, then that supernatural creator who created the natural realm with its natural laws has then become also bound by those natural laws the supernatural creator created. So explain why a supernatural creator is also bound by the laws the supernatural creator created. Or, show how smart you are and just give your science for creation happening naturally and don't forget to give your science how the natural laws were created, too. If he wanted to act smart, it may be a good idea to actually show you are. Sagan the dumbass will at some point face his Maker for his judgment of what he believed in this life. His extreme shame and regret was all his choice. He wanted to be a hypocritical dumbass. Then he'll be thrown into the lake of fire. It will be his 'The End' and be remembered no more. I really appreciate how he asked for 10 volunteers and got 20 and he didn’t bother to tell any one of them just sit down. Instead took the opportunity to engage as many of them as he could even the ones that didn’t seem like they could be particularly useful volunteers, who took the time to make sure that they at least got something out of the experience, attempting to read a very complicated word for their reading level. To see someone take every opportunity to educate. It’s a wonderful example for others.

@@2fast2block The word 'God' refers to first cause. First cause is not a person, creature, thing, or entity that we as physical humans would recognise or understand. Whatever made possible the creation of the universe(s) is not limited to or a characteristic of this/these universe(s). 'God' being a word can become a concept and can get tied to human thought and human psychology and get misunderstood. In this physical existence we can never understand the reality of the correct use of 'God'. In the simplest language I can think of....our existence is possible though the greater and eternal existence of something which we cannot understand directly because of our physical nature. I understand that most atheists think 'God' refers to some human concept (usually due to religious people offering that explanation) and so atheists get the wrong idea. I also know from dealing with religious people that most do believe in a human-like God (at least in some way). So atheists again can't be blamed for getting the wrong idea. The one thing I will say is that any human with any belief system is going to completely miss the reality of what the word 'God' was meant to suggest. Which is why spiritual traditions emphasise humility (acceptance of our limitations and ignorance) and awareness (so we don't mechanically interpret reality to suit our beliefs or thoughts). In short, we should recognise each other as limited, vulnerable, usually wrong and with very little difference from each other.

The idiot is dead. He'll face a harsh judgment when he is raised from the dead then be thrown into the lake of fire for his final death. Nothing happy about his future. What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" from: www.uscatholic.org/articles/202001/god-and-carl-sagan-cosmos-big-enough-both-them-31939 Read the article. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. Much of the content here and the manner and order of presenting it act as a preview into the 1980 Cosmos series. It is interesting to see how, like science itself, an excellent presentation of science (Cosmos) is itself built upon a foundation of previous work. Much as modern textbooks on Newton's gravitation are much more understandable and better presented than in Principia.

Carl was a fool for fools. I'm sure the 'per capita' in the UK and the rest of the world would be eye watering and not a positive outcome. This was shot in 1977. The school children look like those found in photos of UK school children in WW2.

ALL his choice and for others who follow that fool.

Very dumb. Interesting supposition regarding the source of the sodium gas cloud emanating from Io. Completely wrong - of course. The mission he describes as "Jupiter Orbiter with Probe" was later named Galileo and arrived at Jupiter in 1995.

I've watched these Royal Institution Christmas lectures on the BBC every Christmas since I was very young and attended one with my school, and I can recall throwing tantrums when the rest of the family wanted to watch the soaps. I never knew Sagan presented one, though, thanks for uploading this. If anyone ever wanted a good reason why space exploration should continue, we need only look at how much of this information is now outdated by all we've learned from probes and satellites in the 38 years since this was recorded.
