Here's the deal. Carl Weathers does not get nearly enough credit for his talent. The Rocky sequels were all subject to unevenness. Some better than others. The common denominator is the opponent. Weathers ( while a former athlete) always wanted to be an actor. He brings more charisma, energy, and pathos than any other actor. All the other opponents were either dour, super serious, or just cartoons. Weathers made Creed a real flesh and blood man. I mean Creed's whole plotline hinges on a character that died three films ago!!!! Plus Weathers us just so likeable, other guys can't say that.

doing the Rocky films probably acted like a double edged sword for his career, Apollo creed became such an entity in itself i think Carl struggled to shake the character afterwards, which is a shame because he was clearly a massively talented actor and could have played roles beyond the action genre

Carl Weathers was great as Apollo Creed! "Creed" was a big letdown for me. I used to think Rocky V was the weakest of the series until I saw Creed. At least Rocky V had an original story with Rocky training Tommy Gunn, Rocky's neglected son and the street fight at the end. Creed was not original at all. Creed did the persistent young boxer seeking Rocky for training again which they had already done in Rocky V. The boxer and girl get off to a rocky start and then fall for each other has already been done so many times (and it was done much better in the first Rocky). Unknown boxer gets picked by the world champion's team to get a shot at the world champion was already done in the first Rocky. Underdog story has been done many many times already. Michael B. Jordan's performance is a bit weak. There are many other actor's that could've played that role just as well or better. The Rocky movies had a very memorable soundtracks and memorable lines. Creed has neither.
