Really proud of Struff what a performance! Over 50 times to the net was clearly the right approach to face Carlitos and break his rhythm. Really small things and outcome could have been a win for Struff. Way to go Struff!

I think Struff's performance here is going to be a template for a lot of players facing Alcaraz in the near future. Charging the net at any opportunity takes away the drop shot, although then you've got to play the net as well as Struff...

I just love the context: The biggest star of tennis and huge favourite in the Spain masters tournament final in front of his home crowd face an 'old' lucky loser german and huge underdog with no titles to his name, and it turn out to be the most exiting match of the year. Jan Lennard Struff indeed put up a terrific fight against Carlos. Serving and volleying on clay against a guy with a beastly all court game is an insane strategy to begin with. But Struff executed that so well. Struff always felt like an underperformer and looks like be is turning a new leaf over at 33. Wish he stays consistent and reach greater heights. As far as Alcaraz is concerned be is by far the best ever 20year old player i have seen (been following the game since the early 80s). He will be a multiple slam winner for sure and may go down as one of the greatest players ever.

This match was Struff's for the taking, and Alcaraz was playing a notch below his usual level. The Germans serve and volleying on key moments let him down. Even though he was aggressive, that killer instinct, possessed by few players like Rafa, Novak, Serena and now Alcaraz...to decimate the opponent, when he/she's down, is what separates the best from the rest.

Congrats to Alcaraz on his 4th masters and a phenomenal effort by Struff. Although the result ended as most would have expected, not many would have fathomed that Struff was close to winning and could have won the match if he had taken his chances a little more. Props to Jan for displaying a very high level of serving, returning and net rushing. He should keep his head held high despite the result. Despite Carlos's ability to get the job done against a red hot opponent, he'll really need to cut down his unforced to stand any chance against an inform Djokovic in a best of five match.

Struff actually played far better than the highlights show. His biggest weapon his serve, let him down, dismal 1st serve %. Even though he was making some ridiculous volleys, he was missing far too many sitters on the BH side. Struff, like Sinner showed the potential key to beating the Spaniard...solid, aggressive baselines game of both flanks and attacking mindset at the net.

Not that easy. Alcaraz adapts and that is his strength.. Struff had a unique game style with net rushing that made Alcaraz uncomfortable. Plus Alcaraz beat Rafa and Novak at Madrid last year as a less experienced player.
