After hitting hard in the soul circles with his deep Timmion Records debut single "I Can't Love You No More" and following it with "This Is What Love Looks Like," Carlton Jumel Smith is back at it with an album full of contemporary soul gold. The material mined here is none other than the vintage groove troves of classic 1970's r&b, something the Cold Diamond & Mink crew brews up effortlessly. The songwriting and expression by Carlton carry strong echoes of Curtom productions, Memphis soul and naturally Motown. We're talking about musical traditions he's incorporated into his expression since witnessing James Brown at the Apollo as an 8-year old.

I've never heard this song or of Mr. Smith until today, when I heard a snippet of his song on on some news video and just had to look it up. From what I can see, he's an older musician who stayed true to his music without ever achieving great commercial success, and somehow the Walmart campaign found him and used his song. I'm so happy about that and hope that he has all the financial security he ever wanted now. I also wish him all the happiness he ever wanted as well, though I have a feeling that he's one of the lucky and wise few who already achieved that whether or not he was rich financially.

Got the Pre the other day via ITunes and the FULL Today. I am school teacher and the 5-8 Graders were appreciating the music as well. The Album is Soulful, Rocking and Beautiful. Very Nice. Well Done and Bravo Zulu. It is amazing about the Indie Cross Pollination. I found Daptone Records via a Northern Soul Channel. Good Stuff All.
