The saddest part of this is how the interview was impressed with Carlton’s academic performance and had high expectations for him. Will was immediately looked down upon but soon earned the respect of the interview by being himself. That’s all Carlton had to do. He had it in the bag but his jealousy of will got the best of him.
Agreed. If Carlton had just been his usual self, he could've walked out of there with a full scholarship with all the trimmings on it. But as you said, he let his jealousy of Will get the better of him and he tried to be someone he wasn't and look what he got instead: rejected from his dream college, suspended from school, forced to face the disappointment of his family (especially after he lied to them about getting in on a full scholarship) and the hard truth that he let both them and himself down in one of the worst ways possible.
What I find most sad and reflective of the world we live in is no matter how much you work hard, study or give up to attain your dreams, it will usually all be decided by someone with a cavalier attitude in a 5 minute meeting. Meanwhile, the guy who has mocked you, belittled you, doesn't care and only wants an easy life will have all those dreams handed to him on a plate - because he was born taller, wittier, more charming or just naturally more intelligent than you are. This happens day after day to millions of people. Life is deeply unfair.
anicetune usually that’s true but on that one your point is completely bullshit. Carlton did that to himself, lied about it, and couldn’t give credit. If he would’ve been himself that wouldn’t have happened. Don’t make excuses for some ones jealousy. The point of the whole episode was be yourself
I really disliked Carlton in this episode. Will never told him to act like that, he just went and did it, and then blamed Will for "ruining his life" and told him to "go back to Philly". What an asshole he was
He wasn't really an asshole in general nor through-out the show. When someone like Carlton busts their ass everyday to get even a chance to get into Princeton and then someone like Will, who didn't even try, gets an offer, it is enough to make anyone do something out of character.
Crucifier61: Right. It is true that Carlton really messed up in this episode (he should have acted like himself instead of like a bad imitation of what he thought that Will acted like, and the death threat was really stupid). But yes, he did what he did after he saw that Will got close to being accepted into Princeton without even trying. So he misjugded the situation and put on a fake "rap master" act. And when it became obvious that he had failed to impress the man from Princeton, he simply got really desperate, tried bribery and threats, which is when he blew his last chances. Also, Carlton was often portrayed as having less social skills than Will. So he was never able to charm his way through life like Will did. So... it is very understandable that Carlton got angry with Will in this episode. Sure, it is true that Will can't be blamed for Carlton's mistakes. But I can still understand why Carlton would hold a grudge against him after this, just because of envy.
Carlton acted like an ass from the get-go. He’s an A-student in academics, and when it comes to common sense, he’s a dumbass. Let Red Forman be his dad, see how he acts.
@@Furienna Well, the reason colleges have these interviews is to help both the schools and students see if they're the right fit for each other. The Princeton interviewer noted about Will's grades being lower than requirement, but Will impressed him by not only showing that he was a smart kid underneath all that swag and street, but that he also wasn't afraid to be himself no matter what, and the interviewer potentially saw him as a student that could bring some change to a seemingly stuffy Ivy League school like Princeton. I can also understand why Carlton felt like his hard-working efforts were for naught after Will got into his dream school by just being himself and not busting his ass almost at all. But Carlton shouldn't have let his jealousy and insecurities overshadow his courage to be himself. Had he just gone into that interview as his usual self, he could have blown the man away with his grades, great record, and love of academics, and walked out with a full scholarship with all the treats and trimmings on it. But instead, he (very poorly) tried to imitate his cousin to ride on his wave of easy. And then when he realized he'd blown his interview, he desperately tried everything else to change the man's mind (proving it part of his life's plan, begging and pleading, bribery, etc), only to dig himself a deeper and deeper hole with each one, until he finally buried himself with the death threat. And then to top it all off, after this, he tried to cover up the situation from his family by lying to them about getting a full scholarship, hoping he could intercept the phone call from school about his behavior. But his dad got the call before he could, the truth came out, and Carlton was forced to face his hurt and disappointed family. And then he understandably but still unfairly blamed Will for everything just because Will unintentionally upstaged him. All because he couldn't keep the courage to be himself.
@@Crucifier61 But remember Carlton wanted to record Will getting embarrassed earlier in the show and Will was honest he said he was himself. Carlton took it upon himself to try to be like Will why? You would had been fine if you just stuck with what got you there.
This scene was funny and sad at the same time. Carlton really hammed it up but seeing his dream disappearing was sad. If he had’ve been himself and mentioned that he wanted to follow in his fathers footsteps, who is a legend at Princeton, he would’ve been accepted on the spot.
Man this scene brought tears to my eyes when I was a kid. Now I’m back and it never gets old. “Unfortunately at this time Princeton doesn’t accept the clinically insane.” 🤣🤣
No ones been themselves since like 2008.... Nowadays everyone's like a robot.... Same music .... Same hair cuts.... Same slangs..... Its pretty damn sad what the human race is becoming
Point taken, and the interviewer didn't know it, but Carlton's sister was HOT!! Haha, had I been the interviewer and known how hot Hillary was, I would have taken him up on the offer!
@cj8803 What's the big deal? It just supposed to be funny. Idk why you taking it so serious. Plus the way how Hillary was dumb she would've probably done the same thing too
Rest In Peace the great Earl Boen, (1941-2023) best voice actor and forever be remembered as Criminal Psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Silberman😔🙏🪦🖖🩺 “Curse You, Lung 🫁 Cancer how many more people must you take”
People are saying Carlton should just be himself, but the psychology on show here that he's displaying IS that he is showing himself, how desperate he is, how he'd copy Wills natural persona to get in, how blinkered he can be in thinking this would work, and how extreme he'd go under pressure, when something he desperately wants is taken away from him. Part of Carlton is extreme and unhinged, partially because he has to behave a certain restricted way under his dad's shadow. That's why he's a fascinating character. We might laugh at him, and the lengths he'd go to, but underneath that it's a great study in how the mind works under pressure. The interviewer should have twigged he was emulating Will, educated though he was, he wasn't observant, and didn't see the obvious. This is what you get when you have an academic without common sense. In the duration of my BA Hons degree, I met a fair few of these types.
Exactly. The interviewer had a short memory because it was obvious. And Carlton definitely wasn't acting unlike himself, he was acting like Carlton but doing things he thought would impress the interview. And what is acting like yourself if not a presentation of how you want others to see you?
Why would the interviewer care about a guy who called himself Rapmaster C and starts doing a weird dance? Why would he know that he had any connection to Will? Also Will didn't go in and?start acting weird. Will went in and sat down and the interviewer wasn't impressed but Will turned it around when he solved his Cube. They are grown men not little kids.
The thing is, he absolutely wasn't being himself. He was afraid that Will would out do him, and was willing to act like something he wasn't.. that is the whole point here. I know it seems intelligent to say that "he was being himself because he was copying Will", but that is not the point. He was clearly imitating Will.. thus he wasn't being himself. The real Carlton was not like Will at all. What you're talking about is desperation, which isn't a personality, it's a character trait. Also, Carlton isn't really desperate, as that implies he has no options. He absolutely does, he just allowed himself to distort his reality by allowing Will's success to get the better of him. He knows deep inside he is more intelligent than Will; that is the objective reality without question. But any time Will might have the upper hand in anything related to academics, he gets bent out of shape and jealous, feeling the need to do anything to feel superior again. Those are two very different things. He has done this several times throughout the show, like cheating by copying off Will's test simply because Will outscored him in the PSAT. He did NOT need to cheat, we all know that. Yet he wants to feel he is superior, to the point where he will copy Will to some degree if he thinks it will make him feel he is on top again just because Will got a slightly better score. This is more a superiority complex than desperation.
@@vikvegas8593 The thing about Will is that if you notice, he didn't do anything like what Carlton did when he went in to imitate him. Carlton basically did an imitation of how HE perceives Will. Will acted pretty normal even for himself during that interview which is something Carlton didn't know. But Carlton has always perceived Will as just a mediocre guy from the ghetto that could never match his manners, academic skill, or flattery. He has said things like that throughout the show, like when he calls Will a "ghetto goof". So, when Will was considered by the interviewer, he believed that the best way to impress the guy was to act like that guy from the ghetto that he always saw Will to be. After all, if Will could pull it off, why couldn't he? He completely forgot that the main reason to be accepted was to have high scores with many talents and extra curricular activities. Carlton let his superiority complex get the better of him. "Be yourself" was always the moral.
Rest In Peace Actor Earl Boen. This is the best scene I know Earl Boen from as the Princeton man in Fresh Prince "...Was that a death threat, hmm?" R.I.P.
Will eventually won over the interviewer due to his charisma and being himself. He didn't put on an act to impress him, like Carlton did. It was obvious to the interviewer that Carlton was faking it and thought he was insane.
Facts. Plus Carlton had came to the school with a camcorder to film Will's failure, but he was mad that Will got an offer to attend Princeton and was even more pissed when his father showed Will love and gratitude. Will told Carlton many times I was just being myself and that's how I aced the interview. Had Carlton would have listened and not went into the interview acting like a moron and being himself, he would have gotten accepted but he chose not to and had the nerve to threaten the recruiter and took his anger out on his cousin who told Phil to go easy on him when he spoke to him. Plus Phil and Vivian would have been more happier to know that both their son and nephew got offers to attend Princeton.
It had been bugging me for awhile that I didn't include the part where Will said "Piece of cake" at the end and apparently others as well, so I uploaded the ending and Carlton's interview together. That...and after 9 years no one else had a decent quality of Carlton's interview. So...here it is. Hope you enjoy the videos I upload!
He was being himself. Someone willing to connive and manipulate to get his way. Someone willing to change himself to get what he wanted. That is 100% Carlton banks. Interviewer was right to reject him.
Carlton was trying way too hard to be someone he's not, Will on the other hand has that natural charisma and likeability that draws people to him. Lesson here ladies and gentlemen is JUST BE YOURSELF
Saw this episode some thirty years ago. I remember this scene very well along with Will's own Princeton interview. May Earl Boen rest in heaven and thanks for sharing your talent with us. (He was also Dr Silberman, the psychiatrist of the first three Terminator movies.)
Carlton honestly could’ve salvaged it at 1:45 if he had told the interviewer that he wanted to connect with him by emulating Will. Of course he just had to escalate things by running his mouth.
I don’t understand why Carlton lied to his family about getting a full scholarship. They definitely would have found out sooner or later. That’s not exactly something you can hide or fake
I once heard a story about a young man telling his parents he was teacher in oder to not disappoint them. He lied about this studies and made up stories about his 'job' as a teacher for years. In the end it came out that he made a living by robberies and never set foot into a college/university.
@@MrBell-iq3sm Yeah but in this episode, Carlton was still a minor. They would still have to help him move his life all the way across the country from California to New Jersey. They would definitely find out sooner rather than later that he never really got accepted.
That’s why they say ALWAYS be yourself. Never try to duplicate a personality you don’t have because you won’t keep it up forever and people will notice is right away.
Both Terminator (T-1000) and Carlton have a thing in common: they both frightened this guy (remember the "come with me if you wanna live" scene in Terminator 2 - the actor who played the role of Princeton interviewer in this scene is the same one from that scene in Terminator 2)
Poor guy ! I always feel pity for him when I view this scene. It reminds me of Paris Geller in "Gilmore Girls", she had crashed herself as well. This is what happens when you put too much pressure on someone. Working a whole lifetime to achieve something and to be crushed because you got judged on a 5 minute impression, and then facing the reality that your lifetime goal has now turned into a delusion... Man, what kind of world do we live in ! :-(
If he had have just been himself and mentioned that he wanted to follow in his fathers footsteps he would’ve been accepted right away seeing as his father is a legend at Princeton.
@@kendallrivers1119 the show dealt with serious themes and was daring. One can many life lessons from it...even though it's a TV show its still rooted in reality for the most part.
Carlton really missed the point of what Will said about being yourself. That’s literally all he had to do but his jealousy of Will always got the best of him in times like these
Princeton's principal also played the boss of the girl who married Charlie Marno in Tales From the Crypt. Yes, I know I'm the only one who knows that..
This scene made me so angry. Carlton would have aced this interview without question, but he let his perception of what he thought would get him in distort his mind. Will's consideration was a rare exception, it only occurred because of one action which earned the respect of the recruiter, who learned more about him and came to like him as a person. Carlton's academic achievements would have been more than enough, but he felt that if Will got in, then there was no other way but to act like something he wasn't.
Both Will and Carlton were Princeton material but for totally different reasons, that's okay. Carlton just had to be himself in the interview, he surely fucked it up.
Carlton really messed this up...all he had to do was be HIMSELF. He had the grades and the potential. But he was too jealous of WILL, and that distracted him. That's what I didn't like about Carlton. He was smart, but had a jealous streak sometimes.
I havent seen this episode but dang, the comments revealed something bad about Carlton. Not to mention when he got desperate, he thought of every low thing like selling his sister, bribing and even death threat.
2:32 A clear lesson of despite passion you should think before you speak. Don't make threats unless you are in control of the conversation and can back it up and get away with it unscathed. To quote, "he's Carlton Banks the son of the Honorable Judge Banks. You have to go a thousand miles to meet someone who don't know you're name. So, don't come down here with your anger, trying to prove something to yourself."
All Carlton had to do was just speak & converse normally - there was no doubt his credibility & creditentials were set in place. Moral of this do what you have to hit success for you yourself. Dont get influence from others actions that's not yours
Because he saw how far Will can go with next to no effort put into it rendering him and his qualifications questionable, if not nil, which is never an easy thing
xD see there’s a difference of what it means to “being from the hood” will had charismatic qualities with a ghetto twist, but Carlton thought the stereotypical “ghetto” mannerisms were the way to go but that wasn’t it xD
All Carlton Banks had to do was be himself during the interview for the Princeton University scholarship. Carlton has the book and academic smarts but lack the charisma and street smarts that Will have.
you know.. i ain’t tryna make this deep or nun but this is a lesson for men of all ages. Carlton was so busy tryna be like Will to get accepted that he neglected his own super powers, thus makin’ him lose the opportunity in the first place. The guy was already interested & impressed w/ his stats & wanted him on board at Princeton. Carlton proceeded to mess tht 💩 up by his own doin’ which many do today tryna portray somethin’ they not fr💯
-T-1000: "Look, Silverman! You seem like an intelligent human. A human who knows what is good for himself. Allowing me to locate John Connor would be very good to spare your irrelevant life. Because Skynet has more T-1000 models like me. T-1000's, Terminators made of liquid metal and no human emotions. 10-4?!
it implies that he has friend that are Italian and are in the Mob what I think is very stereotype, to reffere Italians as criminals, we are not criminals at all.
I think there was an episode in which Will dared Carlton to live in the hood for a few days and Carlton managed to build himself a crew. With that in mind, his threat might not be so bogus.
Rap Master C, ask me again and i'll tell you the same 😂😂😂😂

It makes no sense for Carlton to be jealous for so much Will has gotten he always had it rough growing up knowing the way he is shows he always worked for good things to come to him as Carlton was born rich and with everything not every family could have knowing his father worked a lot. If he was in Will’s shoes he’d know how much he has gone through. If Will did wanted to go to Princeton I wouldn’t see a problem without it knowing he’d can definitely make a better living for himself plus staying with his aunt and uncle was just a temporary basis. Carlton can be so selfish and uncaring for others.
