I drove my car into a flooded road. The water was up to the bottom of the car. The engine seized up. At first the insurance covered most of the cost and I paid 15% of the cost, at the time was about $1500 for a new engine. This was a 93 Ford Probe One month later, I recieved a letter that stated there was a recall on my car. They needed to install a water seal on the air intake to keep high standing water risking engine failure. Two weeks later after taking the letter to Ford, I recieved a full refund for a new engine at 36,600 miles.

You are lucky that you had a ford probe that actually worked. I had nothing but problems with mine and I didn't drive it through flooded areas and the speed limiter made sure that I could never drive the engine in such a way that it would stress the engine. It was a 3L V6 which was a bit overpowered for that car.

@@PigglyWigglyDeluxe Not really, its just the syncro's cannot function with the lower gear than intended But one can still man handle it, or just let the engine rpm drop enough via the clutch to down shift, and then when the clutch is let loose, the wheels will drive the engine instead of the other way around. Usually the rev limiter will deal with an over rev situation. A big problem we ran into on standard transmission models was the user downshifting causing overrevs which the ECU/PCM has no control over. Nothing worse than a closed throttle/high manifold vac overrev. It's a rod killer.

I'd ask the owner to show which part actually failed not from abuse. This is common with BMW "M" engines.. driver thinks he's dropping into 4th, but he's dropping into 2nd.. lets out the clutch, RPM's go sky high and the rods ventilate the block. Engine becomes an instant toxic boat anchor.
@LoneTiger

And what about people who engine-brake? You downshift to slow down, the engine revs up, and suddenly you are overreving.
@brian5o

I was like, how the hell could this happen in a modern car however what you said about a downshift in a car with a manual makes sense.
@cdw3423
@cdw3423 11 часов назад
Since the forces acting on the rods, piston, and crank are proportional to the RPM squared, it doesn't take much of an over rev to to push past the stress limits and stretch rod bolts or something else. It's pretty easy to accidentally down shift too soon or skip a gear when down shifting and your engine can be toast in an instant. For that reason and the fact that a dual clutch transmission can sift so much faster, if a quality dual clutch transmission is available for your car, it would be stupid not to have one if you want to win a race.

Answer: Relative who had the same warranty, was racing his car, had told them when he BOUGHT THE WARRANTY that he was going to be racing the car, and they did not make any protestations about it or bring up "That is abuse of the WEHICLE!" and would not be covered by the warranty. He made the point that the 'special terms' making it a "I will not replace the engine!" was 4 or 5 pages into the agreement, that no regular person was going to read that far into the agreement, and the judge agreed and pointed out a little known law in his state (W. About 25 years ago, I watched the representative of an engine builder read the engine revs map for an entire race on a laptop computer plugged into an electronic sensor on an engine in a single seat formula car in a stair step class. Taking in account the improvements in computer related technology, it’s conceivable that the manufacturer could have an engine revs map or log of the entire life of an engine in the ECM. Please check this with someone current with prevailing conditions. It all boils down to “if you want to play, you have to pay”.

To everyone saying you can't over-rev a modern car because of the rev limiter....this was a manual transmission. When you drop the clutch the tranny is rotating at x rpm, multiply that by the gear ratio, and that is the speed the engine MUST rotate at until opposing forces slow it down (or it rips itself to pieces). Shifting from 2nd back to 1st when you are at the limit of 2nd gear and trying to hit 3rd will push any manual WAY over the rev limiter.

This is perfectly OK in theory. The manufacturer can see the engine's "danger log" which records all exceptional conditions. If you fail at driving and damage the engine yourself, of course the manufacturer shouldn't be liable. The question is: what does "redlined" mean? Over-revving is different to redlining. Redlining is in the normal operating envelope, over-revving (due to bad downshifting) is not and damages the engine. I know for a fact that eg. Porsche records in their cars' ECUs all over-revving conditions, all rated according to severity. If you have too many high-severity over-revs then that is clearly operator error and the most likely cause of engine failure. But redlining should absolutely not be cause to void warranty and shift liability, because engines are meant to operate normally in a way that they occasionally hit the redline.
@MrBlueBurd0451
@MrBlueBurd0451 14 часов назад
Agreed. Pushing an engine TO red-line is something different than PAST red-line. Underneath the red-line the engine should be able to run without problems, excessive wear, or damage. Above, you risk all of the above. It's not the user's fault the manufactuer's red-line indication is wrong.
@ColdRunnerGWN
@ColdRunnerGWN 13 часов назад

The same scenario in the not distant past happened to a local truck owner. He had a local shop install an exchange head on a diesel engine and some weeks later a valve broke off and dropped into a cylinder destroying the engine. A read out of the computer apparently showed two times where apparently a shift was missed and the engine overshot the governor by approximately two hundred to three hundred RPM. The dealer and not the manufacture initially denied the warranty even though it was proven that the valve stem failed. There are also parameters for how much overspeed is likely to cause damage and how much is deemed something that happens normally in the operation of the engine in this type of use. The manufacturer was contacted and supported the dealership in denying the warranty not because of the overspeed, but because the shop that installed the head was not a factory authorized outlet. Right or wrong, the computer history function has become a tool to be used to limit liability for manufacturers.

Back around 2002 or 2003 I had a 2001 Camaro SS come into the shop I worked at with bent pushrods and a spun bearing. It belonged to a 16 year old kid who had received it from his father. GM initially denied them warranty coverage on the repair (not voided their warranty; that's a different issue) and told them the car had been abused on the race track, which of course it had been. That's when they brought it to us. When I told them what it would cost to fix it they lawyered up and went back to GM. Their lawyer found a case where the court had ruled that if the performance of the car was used as a marketing tool to sell the car then they were liable for warranty coverage when the car was used in that manner. I don't recall the case or the court, but I kept it on hand for several years after that thinking it may one day be useful again. A letter from the lawyer to the dealership citing that case was all it took to get GM to warranty the engine.

A lot of people don't understand that Rev limiters can't protect the motor from excess RPM under many conditions, particularly with a manual transmission during downshifting if you select too low a gear for the car's speed. Having done a lot of racing and track days, one thing I've seen others experience is coverage by insurance when a vehicle gets damaged at the track and it really depends on whether the damage occurred during a timed event or not. Any modern engine control unit will log way more info than anyone would believe. Even if it doesn't keep a log of all the data element, there will be bins that keep track of events at the macro level. Counts of the number of times a threshold RPM was exceeded and for how many seconds, and so on.

Good clutch control was necessary to keep the back wheel from loosing traction as a result. Bike started incorporating slipper clutches to deal with this. I should probably add that in racing motorcycles it was pretty common to hit the rev limiter. You've got helmet and ear plugs in but with the loud bikes around you it can be really hard to hear. The bikes typically pull really hard up to the limiter and all off the sudden the bike stumbles for a second and you realize you're in the limiter and bang an upshift. I'm not familiar with the car, but g-forces can mess with the oil in the pan and get pulled away from the pickup, so momentary loss of oil pressure under high load and RPMs could lead to a failure. It sounds like they gave an explanation to the customer and it'd be interesting to hear how it failed. I'm guessing bearing wear leading to rod knock either overheating and seizing or created a hole in the block.

High performance Hyundai is an oxymoron. But all joking aside it sounds like dude made a money shift.

There are several ways to severely over rev a car with a rev limiter. Ask me how I know!

You may be a mechanic but clearly not very knowledgeable about cars if you think rev limiters make it impossible to over-rev an engine.

The "red line" is there to protect your engine, there's a rev limit. If hyundai thinks that he over-revved it, he has an argument that it's a manufacturing defect, in that if it can rev past a safe rev limit it's their own fault.

If that's the stand they want to take, they should install a Governor. I wouldn't put a warranty on a race car either.

It takes a certain kind of dumb to buy a Kia or Hyundai. They have ALWAYS been trash on wheels with too-good-to-be-true “warranties” that are always declined for technicalities.

$10K for an extended warranty on a Korean car!? That’s insane, I thought they were trying to screw me when they tried to charge me $8k on an Audi RS5. This dude needs to call Tomi before he buys another car.

Surprise! It’s a Hyundai! “Driving your Hyundai voids the warranty…”

Q: Why isn't there a system to prevent redlining? A: Because then they couldn't deny your warranty claim when the engine fails.

The car is smart enough to not let you rev the engine to a point where it would be damaged

Hyundai and Kia are garbage. I would never buy either of those.
