I disagree on her take on Supa Ugly, the level of disrespect Jay threw at Nas would've had most dudes trying to kill that man. Callin a man gay and ugly an entire song wasn't emotional, but smashing his baby mama, and he actually did which she admits, was emotional? That doesn't make sense, sounds like he baited Nas in takeover with that "you know who did you know what with you know who, we'll just keep that between me and you". Then said Allen Iverson got up in it too, that also makes me doubt her credibility of their friendship/relationship being as close as she claims it was. Jay z saw an opportunity to one up his opponent, and she doesn't seem to think she was a pawn in that. I doubt her and Jay were as close as she claims.
True she was a pawn. The beef started before her. Jay z wanted a feature from nas but has never acknowledged him, even after he gained mainstream success. He knows he’ll never be as good as nas and he’s competitive so yeah…he went at nas because he wanted to, not because of his bm. Nas knew he was trying to bait him with the bm situation, he never mentioned her in ether which I think is genius, Jayz was expecting him to because with most men it would have hit a nerve but he just clowned jay z about his looks, which jay z is sensitive about (no such thing as an ugly billionaire). Ether is a masterpiece because he didn’t play into jay z’s hand. He pulled his card and knocked the deck out of his hand. Kinda like Eminem in 8 mile. She failed to recognize that Jay is studious and recognized that he would have to learn his prey to claim his spot. He always had a plan and ulterior motive and she was a means to an end. To get the top spot one obsesses over the individual at the top. So the infatuation was a studious obsession vis-à-vis The Art of War. These triangles, insecurities included, have continued to play out in Jay’s life. To him people are actors playing a role in the production of his life. He feasts, gains the fruits of his labor, and moves on to the next prey/goal.
Nas was never at the top though. Yeah he’s respected lyrically but Jay was well ahead of Nas commercially. If anything, the beef revived Nas’ career because people were saying he fell off after Nastradamus.
Good interview. But I think Carmen is giving herself too much credit. Lol Jay Z said the reason why he went after Nas and Prodigy is because they were both the best lyricist in NY. Ora Maponyane But he was the president of Def Jam at the time and he had the final say about who gets signed and the terms of the deal. Being the president of a company is a whole lot different than just being an employee.
If the premise was that Jay Z signed Nas to Roc-a-fela then this notion that Nas lost the war because he signed to Jay Z would hold some sort of weight but Nas signed to Def Jam because of L.A. Reid. LA merely informed Jay Z that Nas is coming Jay Z didnt confound that deal he was just a face to attract other artists like Rihanna, Neyo, Teiraa Marie to the label after Lyor left and they needed to take a new direction.

I just stated a fact that Jay was the president of Def Jam and Nas did sign to Def Jam when Jay was the president. Anyone who holds the position of president of a label always has the power to decide who gets signed or not. Nas has been interviewed about this numerous times and he said that him and Jay talked about him coming to Def Jam months before it actually happened. It would be crazy for LA Reid to sign Nas without consulting Jay knowing that they had one of the biggest rivalry's in the history of hip hop. LA Reid is way too smart to do something like that.

Lyor Cohen offered Jay Z the Presidency but got caught up in legal drama for torturous interference. When they brought LA Reid there he had all the mandate and powers. He gave Jay the position as a courtesy but Jay didn't do shit for Def Jam. All the signings went through LA. Jeezy Rick Ross Rihanna were all signed when Jay was President but Jay doesn't get credit for those signings. Ok somebody help me with the math. She said she met him around age 16, 17. Then she said she got pregnant 9 months after hooking up. So she was pregnant at 21….huh?
She says in her book, they met, and she didn’t see him again for 3-4 years. When they first met it was brief. Just them seeing each other…not conversing. Nas supposedly falling in love at first sight. But it was a few years when they actually connected and started getting to know each other.
That info was out there for a long long time. If you check out the album credits on Stillmatic, there as a photo of Nas in the studio during 1992 when he was working on Illmatic.
That beef was because Jay-Z is jealous and envious of Nas being naturally gifted and respected long before Jay-Z even linked up with her. He loved Nas flow, etc and I don't believe she never knew this.... she was just a pawn in Jay game of thinking he was Tupac with Faith.... only Nas reaction was not Biggie reaction. Look, ya'll can be mad and say she thinks too highly of herself, but she had 2 legends Nas and Jay legit in their feelings and fighting over her, she is the catalyst of the hottest hip hop beef ever, and she had Allen Iverson, the hottest NBA player at the time. This woman was LIVING. She has every reason to think she was the shit at the time. SHE WAS!!! Her social life was fascinating as hell. She was getting it poppin just like these guys were.
