What superb performances. Maria Ewing is sublime and so suited to this role. She is supported so well by Luis Lima. I have the feeling that Bizet himself would have been so pleased. I know that I was !
Sans doute l'une des représentations de Carmen la plus belle et la plus bouleversante que j'ai vue et entendue.....en tout cas, celle que je préfère.....Avec Maria Ewing (qui malheureusement nous a depuis quitté, et c'est justement Luis Lima qui nous l'avais annoncée) qui incarne une Carmen séduisante, fière et déterminée, même devant la mort, et le poignant, l'incomparable Don José de Luis Lima....passionné, devenu quasiment fou de désespoir par l'abandon de sa maitresse, et qui va commettre l'irréparable....C'est d'une puissance inouïe, et on y crois vraiment....Ils ne jouent plus, ils "sont" les personnages.....J'avais eu le bonheur de dire à Monsieur Luis Lima combien je l'admire....et j'e fus tout particulièrement touché par l'humilité et la gentillesse de ce grand Artiste ....❤👋🙏👍💃❤

Wow! I don't think that I've ever seen a more frightening end to Carmen than this one. Luis Lima is just spectacular as the unhinged spurned lover, Don Jose. If I had a time machine, I'd love to go back in time to see this performance in person. I guess that makes me an opera nut! But that's OK.
Luis looks real, his phrasing is spontaneous and poignant 6:15 being a perfect example, and the way he stopped her from singing at 7:20 was effective. A very inventive artist, I can’t help but wonder if he is improvising some of these reactions, particularly the scene on the ground at 7:24. I can’t say that Maria was able to match the level of fire in his performance, despite her being a competent singer. I frankly don’t think she understood the character, it is a strangely passive characterization of Carmen. She reacts too often with a puzzled, slightly uncomfortable facial expression. She wants to be a Carmen, but she's still a Dido to me.
A emalag999: Luis Lima supo ser un Don José proverbial por la pasión que le hace expresar al personaje y durante años lo cantó realmente bien. Es verdad que no pudo mantener una buena calidad de voz tanto tiempo como Domingo y sí, los que lo apreciamos lamentamos que alguna vez haya querido extenderse más allá de sus límites.
