Act I aria from Bizet's "Carmen." Elina Garanca (Carmen). Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Production: Richard Eyre (2009). From the 2010 Live in HD transmission.
I just recover myself after what I consider a top ten actors play ever in Opera if not the first ever. Words are missing, you just feel it straight in all your being. Once you've seen Carmen played like this demon actress, you just know the opera from a new angle and other may sing better (which is not easy she's an extremely good singer but her French is not very impressive) they'll never reach such a degree of intensity. Because you feel it in her voice too, so that's why even with a better voice you're not to make a better Carmen! I just... yes try to recover atoms of myself gone everywhere in the universe!
Wonderful ! I have never seen a singer so completely "possessed" by spirit of Carmen. That´s how she should be if real. With all respect to other singers, but SHE IS Carmen.
Idk... Carmen is not that sensual in the original book. We don't feel enough the essential thing : her freedom. But I suppose that's the Carmen of the opera.
@@fl.oralion I'm damn late. She's not nessecarily described as sensual but she should be "free" and her whole thing is to play with love. She's very playful and captivating.
@@job8285 of course. She's free in an absolute way, about everything, not just in love, that was my point. in this video this aspect is quite restricted but it's okay! (the scene goes like that I mean) I just thought it was more interesting in the book since she's less in her seduction role and she appears more free about every aspect of life (in the book she frequently seems like an unbearable child)
Ya know, when he knocked the stuff off of the desk, I gasped. It just got so real there. Like, suddenly a very hot fun. , wrong, human interaction. I liked it.
Can we talk about Elina's incredible core strength during the embrace at the end? It looks like she's falling into his arms, but he's not really supporting her. She's essentially holding a boat pose while singing at the top of her range.
When I watch this I get that tight choked up feeling in the back of my throat that you only get when you watch something you absolutely adore, they are both just perfect, with incredible voices and the acting is so intense. I get completely lost in this opera.
Collegiate opera singer here. To some extent, there is going to be face-to-face singing, though we generally try to "cheat" our faces towards the audience both to maximize audibility to the audience and to minimize all the noise that's being directed at whoever's on stage with us (Singing in technique, opera singers can exceed 100 dB of sound - really, really loud).
That has to be the sexiest performance of Carmen ever. I've seen Marilyn Horne, who many said was THE Carmen of the seventies, sing the role; and I've seen Denyce Graves, who many said was THE Carmen of the nineties, sing the role. And I have to say that neither one of them can hold a candle to Elina Garanca. In this production, she becomes Carmen in a way that I wouldn't have thought possible.
He’s a great acting singer / singing actor, and I find him quite believable here. They have great chemistry. (And, for Trivia fans, I believe he actually was in the military briefly as a young man....)
There is a DVD of this performance available for purchase. In addition to wherever you might usually buy a DVD, it is sold by the Metropolitan Opera and can be ordered online
@@narellealana2954 If you've not seen it yet, go to the Metropolitan Opera website on December 4th (any time between 7:30PM EST and 6:30PM EST the following day), and it'll be their "Nightly opera stream". Here is the schedule: www.metopera.org/user-information/nightly-met-opera-streams/ But on December 4th don't click from schedule as they'll ask you to pay. Instead, go to their main page metopera.org and scroll down to the "Nightly opera stream". You need to start before 6:30PM EST on December 5th.
One of the greatest things I've ever seen. Been comparing this to other Carmens and to me it's the acting, staging and directing that takes this over the top. Of course, the singing is amazing, but when Elina combines it with such convincing character acting it becomes overwhelmingly good. With her eyes she communicates the inner thoughts of Carmen the entire time and it's memorizing. And, of course, one can't help but fall in love with her cuz she's so DAMN GORGEOUS!
@@wackneyhick7129 I believe they are using it to express surprise. It seems they are saying, "but," to also express, "and," as well as express surprise. Maybe English is a second language and they would not know, "but," is a qualifier.
No Alagna. Ahora, para mi, no hay ningún tenor con voz adapta para don José
I love the Seguidilla even more than Toreador and the Habanera, and I love this performance of it. The way this scene is played it's clear Carmen is going to eat Jose alive and spit him back up before she's through.
Good grief!! Elina wiped every other singer off the table with her performance. She is just amazing. Wonderful! Roberto aldo performed well but Elina took the honours.
It has already stood the test of time given as it was composed almost a couple of centuries ago. BTW, the Metropolitan opera will stream this full performance starting at 7:30PM EST on December 4th and keep it there for 23 hours thereafter, part of their free "Nightly Opera Streams".
Yes. Most of the moves are director's choice, but she is a great actress regardless with the facial expression and all. I saw her at the Met in this and also in La Cenerentola, you are right.
She reminds me so much of Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind, especially when she smiles at 00:40. Which is rather interesting when you compare both characters!

Thing is, Carmen is as vulgar as she is s*xy. Garança takes the s*xy up to the freaking Stratosphere while doing next to zero vulgar. Still, who cares. 😍
Amazing! Thousand Bravos for that! A muse inspired our quintet of Carmen In Jazz! Incroyable ! Milles Bravos pour ça ! Une muse a inspiré notre quintet de Carmen In Jazz !
