I’ll enjoy it again but only because of the quality of the narration. This whole bedtime stories for grown-ups development is a really precious thing I feel. Thanks again, Mr T
When I read Carmilla years ago it struck me as almost comically melodramatic. Your narration has erased that impression so completely that I'm scared to go to bed now. I'll fold laundry and possibly make a cherry pie to normalize my "frighted" nerves. I was exhausted when I started listening, thinking I'd go to sleep in half an hour or so. It's now midnight 45 and I suspect sleep won't come until dawn, you know, when it's safe. Thanks a bunch, Tony, no cherry pie for you, unless you can materialize across the pond to my hall bedroom. Omg! Don't, not tonight. 😮
This has to be one of the creepiest stories ever. My favorite of LeFanu's for sure. Many of his stories are hard for me to get through, making them perfect to fall asleep to. ❤
There’s some surprising foreshadowing within their first interaction that I don’t recall in other narrations of this story; I was rather shocked at Carmilla’s boldness of strange emotional “overcoming”. It is rather odd & so naive. 🕷️🕸️ It makes me wonder if this is a newer embellished version, or the actual text & I just don’t remember it being so obvious & disturbing- so much talk of death! A lovely, eloquent narration, once again! The image is a perfect image. Thank you. 🪭🧛🏻♀️🐾🦷🫀 P.S. I’m very interested in the analysis❣️
To me, this story, significantly earlier than Dracula, marks a liminal moment in English literature, or at least one of them, bridging the gap between the folkloric and literary vampire. In many ways, it's a milestone, if not directly in LGBTQIA literature, then certainly in literature that moves beyond purely heteronormative narratives. And it's always been one of my favorites
I don’t agree or disagree with what you wrote- but I will say that is very much your perspective. This story, ostentatiously involving a romance between 2 young women, isn’t really about that at all. It’s is about vampires, their charms and manipulations, their many ways of finding and chasing and killing their prey. Not true romance, but bloodlust. Is it a *presentation* of romance between 2 same sex individuals? Yes. Is that what the story is about? No. I’m not sure you want this story to be in the category you’ve put it in, but I understand your pov as well.
@@yesterdayitrainedI think the main thing is, there is some romance. Is it healthy? Absolutely not, but it is there. Carmilia herself is oddly complex for a monster from that time. She seems to genuinely want to draw out her murder of Laura, she tries to find logical reasons for her own behavior, she tries to explain that she has a disease and not a curse. In terms of lesbian literature, it is fascinating
One of my favorite recordings from your channel. I really like listening this one before bed. I didn't notice a missing chapter in the other uploads, but I guess we'll see.
Carmilla is my favourite vampire tale, or was until I read John Metcalfe's novella, The Feasting Dead, yesterday. Pleased to be able to listen to this again, though.
My favorite line from when I read it years ago. General Spielsdorf: “She was standing, near the door, a little group surrounding her, all looking at her with faces of unspeakable terror. I, too, had seen her, and in the forest, far away from the schloss. I am resolved to trace her, though she should lead me to the mausoleum of the Karnsteins. There, with my sword, I clove her skull in twain, and beheld it reeking with blood.”
Sorry ,,I am not ever Consice!! Thank you Tony,, Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Narration!! We really enjoyed *The Casket* written by your good self! I hit the Like Button and Shared it with Mr D. ... XxX...
Just as gripping this time around. Love the story, the expressive, vivid , elegant narration and very entertaining voices. Le Fanu is one of my absolute favorites. I bought his "Ghost Stories and Tales of Mystery" over my ever faithful local web-bookshop. The back cover states "This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it today." True, very true. But that is not why I bought it. I bought it not for "scholarly" purposes, but for the sheer desire to be entertained. Why use one word where ten will do?! Pour on the adjectives in complicated sentences!! Right now I just finished the first story in the book ,"The Watcher". Perhaps you are right, as you pointed out about another author of the time--can't remember which one-that no modern day editor would let him get away with the ending. But who cares? I vividly see him before me, sitting in the Spirit World, dressed in "period" costume, shaking with laughter. "Where will said editor be in 200 years? I`M still here!!!" Thanks for introducing us, Tony. J.S. and I have become true mates!☺👍👍👍
I meant, of course, " A modern editor WOUDN`T let him get away with his endings", who cares? His Green Tea has put me off real green tea for good. J S's mother probably made him drink it as a kid or something. For his health. Off to listen to your great narration of Green Tea with new ears. Thanks for all the hard work you do for all the hard work you do for us, Tony!💐💐💐@@ClassicGhost
Wonderful job!!! Listened to Carmilla on RU-vid since I had it downloaded. I'm guessing you also like old horror movies? The anagrams vampire used reminded me of.Lon Chaney Jr's Count Alucard 🦇🧛♂️
Just as gripping this time. Never will tire of this tale and your vivid, word-images narration. You're the best, Tony. Thanks so much for your hard work for us.
Some of chapter 10 is cut off, just after the colonel asks how far off Karnstein is, then it picks back up at the beginning of Chapter 11! Love your readings so much, I’m trying to hit all of them before Halloween!
Mate I love your voice, as a listener to a million stories never have I heard such beautiful vocal spelling. If You could vocalise an Argus catalogue it would be a best seller!! I can’t wait to listen to a million more of your storytelling.
Sorry, but it sounds like Ch. 10 "Bereaved" got cut off early. Luckily, I don't think anything important got skipped. It's always something with these longer uploads, isn't it?
Multiple issues here. my last editing program Hindenberg has started inserting noise artefacts which they aren’t addressing so i’m trawling around for an alternative. tried logic pro (for music) Pro Tools (won’t install on my computer) Adobe Audition- the best but expensive and a resource hog . so gone back to trusty Reaper but when he move files it squashes them and adds fades. last problem os my famous lack of attention to detail !
@@ClassicGhost So much for computer programs making our lives easier, huh? You have my sympathies and my thanks for putting up with all that to share your fantastic narrations with us ❤
I think Le Fanu was Irish as was Bram Stoker but I dont know if they were around at same time.I wonder if they knew each other. That would be a great dinner party to attend.
@ClassicGhost THANK YOU.I HAVE A BRAIN INJURY AND LEGALLY BLIND AFTER ACCIDENT.SO I CANT UNDERSTAND READING ANYMORE.I REALLY LIKE TO LISTEN TO YOUR STORY TELLING.IN IRELAND STORY TELLING IS IN OUR D N A !!THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION ABOUT LE FANU AND MR STOKER.I MUST RESEARCH.KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.I APPRECIATE YOU AND WHAT YOU DO.
Thank you Tony!!❤👍 Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Narration of another 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Choice of Ghostly Tale of Terror!! My friend, Jasper is now Convinced he's really Famous!! I very much enjoyed Your Own 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Writing,. And also the your 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Narration of those!! *The Casket* is Fantastic!!. (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟X10!!) And very beautifully Done!! I really must apologize for not 'getting' the full Confusion of the protagonist at first!! My excuse would have been to explain that I'm still not 100%, after the change of Medication and the Allergic reaction. ( I had to Yeet them back to the GP!!) So, I'm probably much more confused than Mr Armstrong himself!! Jasper barked out, ~ "That's the Truth!" ~ Adding ~"She hasn't quite grasped that,, of course I'm really very Famous now It was only a matter of time!"! (The Silly Woman!! ) Namasté 🙏🕊️💞 Andréa and Jasper. ...XxX ..
Fantastic story and narration! I love this story so much. I listened to the previous recording and did not even notice Chapter 12 was missing. LOL! I wondered if I should only listen to Chapter 12 or listen to the whole thing? Easy answer for me. I listened to this twice in the last day to catch everything. I am glad I did! I love the artwork for the story. As with everything else, it fits the story perfectly. The artwork for your previous recording is excellent as well. Thanks for recording this classic!
@@ClassicGhost In the description of The Space Casket where it says “Exclusive videos for you!” The next line has a quotation mark at the beginning that I assume was copy pasted in. I assumed someone wrote it for you as it doesn’t feel like how you would write or speak. I didn’t want to draw attention to it but since you asked.
