As a part of our Dress Shoe Review series, today we take a look at Spanish shoemaker Carmina’s Style #190 Wholecut Oxford in Shell Cordovan #8. Recognizing us as one of the leading authorities on luxury men’s dress shoes worldwide, Carmina has graciously agreed to grant us access to their entire collection of shoes to review for you on our RU-vid Channel.
SHOE INTRODUCTION
The Carmina Style #190 Wholecut Oxford in Shell Cordovan #8 is a part of Carmina’s extensive lineup of shell cordovan shoes. Constructed on the Rain last, the shoe features a soft, square toe that gives the shoe a modern, slightly updated aesthetic. The sleek, simple Wholecut design of this model showcases the beautiful, waxy texture of the Horween shell cordovan leather without any visual disruptions, and really allows Carmina’s craftsmanship to show through.
The shoe retails for $750 with free shipping in the United States. For those located outside the United States, they can be purchased from Carmina’s European webshop for 690€. Cedar shoe trees are an additional $70 and Carmina offers flat-rate returns for $35.
DESIGN
The Carmina #190 Wholecut in Shell Cordovan is a simple, elegant shoe that showcases a graceful balance of the Rain last and the beautiful Horween Shell Cordovan used to make them. The shoe is quite simple. You really get what you see here.
However, in the iconic Horween #8, which is a beautiful oxblood, the shoe can be worn during the daytime with a navy or dark grey suit or even on the weekend with a nice pair of dark denim jeans. It wouldn’t be appropriate formally in the evening, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t get away with it.
The Rain last is one of Carmina’s most-popular. A total of twelve models are constructed on this last, more than any of the company’s other fifteen lasts. The Rain last features a soft, square toe that gives the shoe a modern, slightly updated aesthetic. It is a beautiful shape, especially for those who do not want anything too round.

MATERIAL
All of Carmina’s cordovan is sourced from The Horween Leather Company in Chicago, the only cordovan leather tanning factory left in the western hemisphere. Horween’s name is synonymous with shell cordovan. Cordovan has a beautiful, natural satin patina that is immediately distinctive, totally unique, and very easily cared for. The shine or waxy luster of cordovan is an inherent property of the skin, which does not require much maintenance to maintain. This is one of the reasons that cordovan is a cult favorite among road warriors and shoe aficionados.
In addition to using only the finest quality shell cordovan available, all of Carmina’s shell cordovan shoes are exclusively made with JR Rendenbach oak-bark tanned leather outsoles and combination heels.
The combination in the durability of the cordovan uppers and JR Rendenbach outsoles make this shoe incredibly durable.
CONSTRUCTION
Carmina is so well-known amongst shoe enthusiasts because of how well their shoes are constructed. All of the elements of quality and craftsmanship that one would expect on a high-quality pair of factory-made, Goodyear welted shoes can be found here. Beyond this price point, you begin to hit the point of diminishing marginal return. The value here is quite exceptional.
The shoe is completely Goodyear Welted, which is the designer of high-quality factory-made shoes. Goodyear Welting is the process whereby a leather strip is sewn to a linen ribbing that attaches to the insole. The outsole is then stitched to the welt.
The upper is also very well-lasted, which gives the shoe a good definition. You can tell that a shoe is quickly lasted by machine if there is little to no shape to the upper. However, with these Carminas, you can see that the shoe indeed has a nice shape along the edges of the shoe, and especially where the upper meets the waist. In short, the shoe has an elegant, three-dimensional shape that showcases the lasts design.
Carmina is passionate for shoemaking, and everything about how these shoes are constructed and finished is superb. At $750, they are an incredible value and a shoe that anyone could be proud to wear anywhere.

Excellent review, Kirby! Sometimes things just come together. For 2 weeks I had been visiting Carmina's site everyday weighing my options. I was looking for a nice burgundy shoe, likely on the rain last. Going custom wasn't an option as I had never ordered anything in UK sizes before and I needed the option to return. So I was trying to decide between the museum calf quarter brogue, or this slightly pricier cordovan whole cut. The morning I get up to finally place my order, this video is in my feed. You made the decision seem like an easy one. My shoes arrived today and they are every bit as impressive as you suggested! Thank you for the information as always, and keep up the great work!

Forgive me if you've already answered this question in the past, but I've always wondered what the exact meaning of "Italian" leather was. For example, if a pair of dress shoes is made with Italian calfskin leather, does that just mean the leather was sourced from Italy or is it a specific process to make the leather? Also, is Italian leather just generally better quality leather than say a leather from anywhere else? Thank you for your time!
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 5 лет назад
Normally it means that the leather was tanned in Italy. The actual hide could be sourced from anywhere. It's the tanning process that really makes the difference. Different tanneries produce different quality of leather, and most of it boils down to how quickly the leather is tanned. Fast-tanned leather is "less expensive" than slow-tanned leather. Take a look at all of our JR Rendenbach videos. You'll really learn a lot.
@BassFishing81

Kirby, I’ve been thinking of buying these exact shoes for over 4 years, and every time I think I’m ready, I see a used set of wholecuts (albeit calfskin) with wrinkling that really makes me think I won’t wear them past the 6 month mark. Their clean, simple look is appears easily marred by use. So how have these aged?
@krollic
@krollic 5 лет назад
Cordovan is extraordinarily tough, far more so than regular leather (skin). It doesn't wrinkle; it bends in "waves" and if kept in good condition, the upper will last longer than you will. That's the reason they're so expensive. It's borderline impervious to wearing out when it is treated properly, just make sure you're using the right conditioner for it.
@dapperneveah
@dapperneveah 3 года назад
I'm in the us military and looking to upgrade my dress shoes. I have 15 years left and am ready to invest in a high quality dress shoes. I can either wear a cap toe or whole cut. They will be worn several times a month for 4-6 hours at a time. I think the whole cut looks better in formal mess dress but I wonder if it will hold up as well as a traditional oxford?
@samuelrosethorne1858
@samuelrosethorne1858 Год назад
I guess that is more contingent on leather quality and care routine? I am someone who wears dress shoes daily, and I think that proper care (and watching the wear) can certainly extend their life, as long as you aren't doing things like trekking through mud in them, which would make them more difficult to clean. Also, in direct response to your question, cap-toe and other decorative elements mean essentially nothing to the overall durability of the shoe. (A lot of those elements are just decorative, such as the fact that broguing nowadays is not truly perforated). There is no added structural benefit. Go with your preference.

"Cordovan isn't actually a skin. It's a membrane found underneath the skin from the hindquarters or rear shells of a horse." [The term 'shell' refers to the dense, fibrous, oval-sized membranes found beneath a horse's hindquarters, the size of which will vary with each animal] Thanks for the clarification, Kirby! As long as the flap is glued back down properly (which Carmina, of course does), it doesn't affect the outsole at all. The worst that could happen is a small tear between the outsole stitching and the edge of the outsole, which is no more than 2-3 mm.

I don't have any specific recommendations for denim brands... I have had some jeans made by a company called 3x1 in New York City. They have the largest selection of raw denim in the United States. Quite exceptional. As for care, I suggest washing as infrequently as possible. When you do have to wash them, I suggest soaking them for 24-48 hours in light detergent to pre-treat and then rinsing on a gentle cycle. Hang dry from the cuffs.

Camina's are better than Allen Edmonds despite both using identical or similar materials. Carmina takes far more time and care at every step. From the stitching density/evenness. The application of the welt, the sharpness of the broguing and pinking. The additional details missed on the Allen Edmonds that Carmina got right. Example: my Carmina boots have a patch of shell on the foot bed of the boot with details, an additional hint that you got a nice pair of shell shoes. Allen Edmonds uses their default insole/lining that can be found on ANY of their collection. Whether a $300 forever on sale model, or a $700 Flagship, Trunk Club exclusive Shell boot.

I use a CARMINA cordovan pair of shoes in good condition from 2001, and some others of the same brand, purchased in CARMINA shoeshop, placed at Gran Vía of Madrid. I do truly think CARMINA shoes are among the very best brands worldwide, as Kirby Allison has affirmed. Moreover, I have used the former footwear brands belonging to José Albadalejo and family (CARMINA's origin) from the 70's decade, besides some others as Charles Jourdan, Fratelli Rossetti, Allen Edmonds. there's one thing i've noticed about these really high end shoes. like kirby explained, they only have 3/4 stitching on the edges which is almost invisible, and the good year welt stitching also isn't visible on the sole of the shoe. this is very similar to cheaper shoes where the sole is cemented on the upper, making the stitching invisible, and only decorative stitching is visible on the shoe's edges. that makes me wonder how one could tell apart the two.

You don't get cemented leather soles for one, and the difference between a Goodyear welt and a fake Goodyear welt is pretty apparent.
@kaikaichen
@kaikaichen 5 лет назад
I think it's just something where the consumer needs to be educated and informed about the brand as well as the specifications of the shoe before purchasing, e.g. having awareness that Carmina shoes are all Goodyear welted and come with invisible channel stitching by default. That said, for a purely cemented shoe, if you take a very close look at the area between the sole and the and the upper, you often can actually see a little bit of the glue.

All good commentary here. And, yes, there is such a thing as "fake Goodyear welting" where a faux welt with stitching is glued onto the shoe between the upper and the outsole. Generally speaking, though, you can tell by looking for the stitches. And, more importantly, by doing your due diligence before purchasing a pair of shoes. Most reputable makers should be fully-transparent about whether the shoe is welted. That said, blake and cemented shoes do have their virtues, especially for more casual shoes that need to be more flexible and softer. Even Gaziano & Girling has a cemented range of "Fresco" shoes that are very, very nice. And any skilled cobbler can resole cemented shoes. They just won't last a long as a good pair of Goodyear Welted.

Thanks for the review. (Never understood the camera 2nd angle though. Just look at me if you're talking to me.)

If we had a larger office, it would be even more offset. Unfortunately, slightly limited to what we can do because of space constraints.

They would look better with the heals together. Loakes makes wholecuts. M.

Seamless whole cut is actually a very difficult shoe to make and not something I’ve ever seen done outside of bespoke. And in Cordovan, it’s probably impossible because the hides are not large enough to pull over the top of the last.
