I have a BBC 427 in a Corvette. 100 miles on the motor and the collar on the distributor slipped... zeroed the oil pressure. Still ran, but on borrow time. Just pulled it apart - adding more compression with domed pistons, better rods and a better crank. For all the same reasons you stated - you know it works, and now it's time to really turn it up
Instal the new chain you have so you can do a compression test, not that much work. Then install the double row chain when you have it. you wouldn't need to assemble much except the timing cover (oil pump)
When it rains, it pours...Good opportunity to delve in and see if any particular thing caused the chain to snap.Hope the cam didn't get de-lobed. Enjoy the holidays and put this on the back burner for a while.

put a chain on and do a compression check while its apart, odds are many of the valves are bent. Use a genuine AC Delco sensor or you will be doing it again pretty soon.
Hi. And merry Christmas. Why not just replace the timing chain gear set with the supplied components. Then do a compression test. Standard practice for engines that have snapped cam belts. Then you can decide whether to pull the engine out or put it back together.
Merry Christmas from up In Sydney. We will not know until probably a week after Christmas as to how wide spread Covid is. It sucks what has happened to the motor but hopefully the damage is minimal. We had a rebuilt unblown V6 on the dyno and it broke the head of a valve at full revs on a horsepower run. Did that cause some damage !

Did it have oil pressure when you were checking for spark and other stuff?? I wonder if the cam or balance shaft have siezed causing chain to break?? Pull off the oil filter , use a proper tool for cutting it open and see if any metal has made it through the oil pump. You may have bottom end issues as well.
Making the Smart choice Scott. Get it done in one hit mate. No one knows with Sydneys fairly loose rules which way it will go. One already has good idea what it will run. Go for more.
If you change your mind about redoing everything, just give it a leakdown test to see if any valves are bent. If they're good, slap on the new chain and go convert tires into smoke.
No good scotty . The reason your timing chain broke is not because its weak but because you did not have the valve guides machined down for clearance. I bet they are making contact with the retainers and thats whats caused it to snap the chain. It states on maces website you need to machine the valve guides. Imo pull the engine and give it a proper freshen up. 400k bottom end aint going to last long and it will be out again. I went stg 2 cam so i didnt have this issue and also did double row chain and oil pump gears. Btw when its going again im calling you out L67 vs L67 at wsid if your up for it ?
I just think its a combination of spring pressure and lift in combination with the budget replacement chain. I knew I should have gone double row but was in a hurry at the time. Oh well, we'll get it sorted. Happy to line up if the opportunity presents

Leave it as together as possible, swap the new chain in and reset timing. Start it up and drive it around and see if it seats the valves tight again. If that trick works replace timing chain again because the current new one will be rooted.

Whatever you do, DO NOT replace the crank sensor with an aftermarket one, I’ve seen 5 dodgy aftermarket ones in the last week, all from reputable suppliers in your area too lol
Definitely pull it down and check it over. Even though it was a $500 donk at those power figures the bottom end should be alright so no point going for the full 4.2 stroker yet. But I say put a double row chain on it. Get the heads ported and do the blower too while it's off. Put the intercooler on there (water to air I'm assuming) and wind the boost up to 15psi. Shoot for 300kw or so.

Glad you are making the decision to do it right, nothing would be worse than going to the trouble of putting it back together only to find you have massive leak down or worse. Time for a cam upgrade as well?
I think you made the right decision mate with a break like that you need to know its all fine before you send it. And as you said you have it all apart you may aswell do stage 2 in prep for stage 3 even. Have a great Christmas break guys. Merry Christmas to you both and your families.

Crow valve spring let me down. Even sold my bro the wrong cam for he's supercharged motor. He put in & all. Didn't make the power he expected so he rang them as a new customer..asked what cam for he's motor & they said a different cam to the one they had already sold him! Blamed a staff member 100% their fault but wouldn't just swap them over. Let alone cover time & cost of fitting or dyno ...12months later they handed him a suspect & what looked like was a used but reground pos cam. He again Fitted it & it was also no good. Over the whole project by this stage... he Binned crows crap cam & bought elsewhere. Had no issues on fit again payed up to be tuned. But made what they claimed..thanks mace happy days. 😁👍 I Couldn't believe they admitted the mistake then did nothing to sort the shit out. Crow scams
Definitely get rid of the single row chain. Been running a double row with a solid roller for years without issue. Remove balance shaft and plug the oil gallery at the back of the block
Wow really? You honestly stripped the whole motor down and rebuilt the shit just to leave the single row timing chain ? Loooool you guys are great and all but far out really it’s advised to change to a double row timing chain when you change the cam let alone with a charger on top. It just goes to show you not much thinking goes into a lot of the stuff and it shows. I mean you upgraded the rod bolts yet the single row timing chain stayed ? Nice good work
buddy scotty mate you right, do it right the first time and get it tuned that way you have the best of the best parts and a lot more power, plus a small cam as well to suit the engine plus hp figures you want around 300 KW at the rear wheels easy and that way she is done, just hope the auto holds up and the diff, thats the next problem? Anyway i hope you have the great xmas with the family and all the best a the drags. :)

bloody v6,s ... im sure a witch was hired to hex them as they rolled off production line hahah all up i went thru 11 of them in my vp skid car ranginging from timing chain fail at high rpm to smashing holes in head dropping valves and spinning bottom end bearings bad enough to weld the crank to the block almost

lol I told you about those rollmaster timimg gears when you first started this build! Rollmaster = Rubbish that Crow ar a Cloyes single row are are plenty strong! My l67 had high ratio rockers and most of the same mods (176kW) and it bent 3 valves after the Rollmaster crank timing gear broke in half!
