This special, originally aired September 12, 1961, is a one of a kind tribute to Jack Benny for the benefit concerts he performed all over the country to raise money for struggling orchestras. Through the course of his life, Jack said nothing gave him more pleasure in show business than these concerts, affording him the opportunity to play with the greatest symphonies in the world while helping them stay afloat financially.
This largely musical special is overflowing with great performances, by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, pianist Van Cliburn, violinist Isaac Stern and jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. If you're only interested in the portions that Jack appears in, after the opening, skip to 34:52.
The priceless concert footage here has hardly been seen since this special originally aired, and I'm not aware of any other video of Jack's symphony performances.

from Dallas, TX ... What a treasure!! for all who love Jack Benny and great music performed by legends including Texas' own Van Cliburn. I well remember the NY ticker tape parade given to Cliburn after he won the first ever International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. He was proclaimed "the Texan who conquered Russia."

Sep. 21, 2023 ... Seeing Roberta Peters here reminded me of seeing her, Jerome Hines and other opera greats on The Voice Of Firestone tv show with the orchestra conducted by Howard Barlow. Our family watched that show every week. The show always opened and closed with the song that began, "If I could tell you .. of my devotion, " etc. Is anyone else out there old enough to remember The Voice Of Firestone??

After appearing with Jack Benny, Leonard Bernstein summed up, "He came. He sawed. He conquered."

He didn't restrict himself to "pop music". Benny also recorded a number of symphonic and chamber music sides, as well as performing with symphony orchestras over the years.

@@fromthesidelines That's right! Roberta and Jack did a spoof of "La Traviata" with Roberta as Violetta and Jack as Alfredo!

One of the all time great opera singers. Her roles included Gilda in RIGOLETTO.

Sep. 21, 2023 ... I listened to this two years ago. This time I was especially moved and astonished at the performance of Roberta Peters. I'm so glad this program has been preserved and posted. It is very sad to realize that ALL those great musicians on that stage are now dead and gone. I'm old enough that I saw the original broadcast in 1961, so I'll be dead and gone soon myself!!

I'm not sure whether this was Jack Benny's best violin playing, or whether he was intentionally missing some notes and intonations (and not counting the hilarious false starts) but either way, this was pretty good "amateur" violin playing on his part. I mean, "the Bach concerto for two violins in D minor"! and I don't care how self-assured Mr. Benny was as an entertainer, I can't imagine how scary it was to stand next to Isaac Stern and match him note for note (almost hehe).

For Jack to appear and perform with various symphony orchestras over the years- usually at charity concerts- he pushed himself to practice as often as possible. He was quite diligent about being the best violinist he could be when playing it "straight"- but it also took practice to deliberately hit "clinkers" and "wrong notes" when in "comedy mode". His timing was flawless. Isaac Stern knew that- and was delighted to play with Jack at these kind of concerts, and introduce him to other talented classical performers {they were close friends for almost 30 years}.

whatever your ruminations on the Jacks quality of playing;he played well enough fro his audience to enjoy it repeatedly...

@@kelvyquayo, do I detect a note of sarcasm in your reply? There are plenty of old TV clips in much better quality so I don't think this one is deserving of an upload. That's my opinion so live with it! Perhaps I should not have been so blunt but I was not commenting on the performance itself but the dismal video quality.

@@markblass4490 Fair enough, buddy. I'm just saying this is a very specific performance that doesn't seem to be available for free easily.. To me this is like finding an old piece of dusty art but discarding it because of the dust.

I was playing Viola only 2 years when Jack Benny came to solo with my teachers in the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra; he was playing the Mendelsohn E Minor Concerto. He not only played it straight he played it very well. Very personable and courteous to young musicians; just 3 years later I played in the Phoenix Symphony next to my teachers as young artists like Yo Yo Ma came to town.

Ahhh Benny Goodman! My father’s idol when he was a kid and he had original albums of Goodman and Glenn Miller and others. I grew up listening to dad’s Big Band music. In 1975 the family saw Benny Goodman in concert and my father was like a kid in a candy store. He was just thrilled to death to see his idol and seeing dad made me happy. Dad got a clarinet as a kid to play like Goodman. Never worked as dad squeaked. But I have his clarinet whose so old that the original case the handle fell off. Because my father idolized Goodman and grew up to Swing, seeing this has a special connection.
