At 1:22 Nope it wasn't SOS. SOS is 3 short | 3 long | 3 short. What you've heard was just the general alarm code used on almost all ships. The code used is 7 short and 1 long, emitted by the fire alarm devices (Red boxes on the walls), the ship's horn and whistles. On some newer ships, when this alarm is triggered, it automatically sends an emergency signal to the coast guard.
lol. For anyone curious, S.O.S. is actually 3 short, 3 long, 3 short. (Or sometimes unofficially any grouping of the same sound 3 times, as a general emergency call for help.)
The cruise director told you what alarm was being called, why would you think it was SOS? The alarm called was the "General Emergency Signal which consists of seven short blasts followed by one long blast of the ships whistle. Upon hearing this signal, you should go to your stateroom, don your life jacket and immediately proceed to your assembly station." You should have heard something similar to this when you practiced the Muster Drill within 24 hours of all guests on-board at your home port.
That's not SOS. That's the general emergency alarm. However in school I had to take a US Coast Guard course in basic shipboard safety training, and in that class they taught us that the general emergency signal is one long, continuous blast "for no less than 10 seconds". What cruise lines say is for a general emergency, the US Coast Guard calls "more than 6 short blasts followed by one long blast" and says is specifically for abandon ship.

It doesn't matter what is said by the tour person. If you hear that alarm get to your muster station. You can de-escalte later. That alarm means there is somthing seriously wrong and it is sounded by ship crew usually by or on the order of the ship captain.
Patrick- Good video. Why didn’t everyone need to report to their muster stations? Or is it that during a general alarm, the passengers are on “stand-by” mode waiting for the next set of emergency tones or instructions?
They told us not to go to the muster stations. The "smoke" was contained in tthe rear of the ship. we found out later that they decided to let it burn itself out.
I was on carnival panorama it literally caught on fire on the bottom of the ship but the horn was louder than you think I will never forget that Jesus Christ
Depends on which ship. Where i work we have a completely different code for fire and a similar code for medical. We have some 8 codes for different situations, along woth other standard mariners phrases, like for example security levels.
It's odd, the signal given in this video is that for abandon ship (More than 6 shorts and 1 long on whistle/general alarm). What they meant to sound was 10 seconds of more steady on the ship's whistle/general alarm for Fire and General Emergency. If you are on a cruise ship and hear more than 6 shorts and 1 long on whistle/general alarm you should go to your abandon ship muster station. *Source: I'm a merchant marine Captain
Thats not am SOS alarm lol. The SOS alarm, on the horn at least, is 3 short, 3 long. 3 short (aka Morse code for S-O-S) This is just a general emergency alarm. 7 short, 1 long. This means to go to your stateroom, grab your life jacket, and proceed to your assigned muster station. They go through this with all passengers shortly after you leave the home port.

The fat lady has no idea what goes on behind the scenes. They can't just take a ship out of service like that. It will be very expensive to do that. Passengers are safer where they are.
The head cruise director very distictly said later that there was no fire only smoke, I didn't record this but we were clearly lied to even if thet thought it was for our own good.

I was on the ship and have one planned in Feb. that he is the cruise director on...We enjoyed his announcements!! We are not stupid and did know there was a fire!! Anyone that says this experience was awful, stay at home. My husband said this was much better than any time spent on a Navy Aircraft carrier...Big deal we were forced to eat healthy food!
I would like to clear a few things up. This video is after the "Alpha, Alpha Alpha" announcement. The "guy" in the video speaking is me and I know what S.O.S sounds like and I also know what sarcasm sounds like. The cruise director did his job and that was to say whatever he was told, having said that, we could have been informed of a fire that was obviously under control that wouldn't ended in "riots"; wost people know what would happen if you jumped 12 stories off a boat.

We enjoyed his announcements..we have a cruise booked in feb. and he is the cruise director!! Anyone that says this cruise was awful needs to stay at home!! My husband said it was much better than any Navy Aircraft carrier. He was also quite comical at times,which was very tasteful!!

There are two ways. A passenger presses the fire alarm button on any deck to sound an alarm that is only in the bridge which will alert the crew so they can investigate and ask the captain to sound the alarm. Or the captain can be told by security that they've seen smoke/fire via CCTV and he can activate the alarm. No, the captain's alarm isn't a break glass one. It is either a grey button labelled 'General Emergency Signal', or it could be a red one saying 'General Emergency Signal'.
The general emergency alarm can only be activated by a button located in the bridge's emergency command centre. Possibly, there may be one in a lower deck control room, but thats not confirmed. The buttons usually black, but some ships the button is a transparent black so that the LED under the cover can shine through when pushed. Jinga roblox said that a passenger can activate it, however that is not true. Those Consilium or Autronica call points you find onboard cruise ships don't activate the signal. It sends a signal to the main alarm panel in the bridge. Basically, the alarm system on large vessels such as cruise ships are similar to the ones on land with manual activation (call points) and automatic activation (smoke and hear detection), the only difference is that there is no alarms connected to vessel systems, which is why theres no alarm signals immediately upon an alarm condition incoming. They always send someone (fire guard a.k.a security) to investigate and if that manual or automatic activation was positive for an emergency, the appropritate signals are sounded
However, Carnival Cruise Lines is one of the very few cruise lines to have a distinct signal for a fire, which consists of 2 long blasts over the alarm system and the ships horn. If it was a fire condition, or even a smoke condition, I would think they would sound that signal instead of the general emergency signal.
If I was any of them I would find the lifeboats just to be safe anyways if I get on any boat right away I will find them lifeboats and if there is a problem I will board them lifeboats
You should report to your muster station anytime a situation like this should arise, unless the crew advises otherwise. In this case, people were advised to move to open air and normally muster stations are on an open deck. However, you can't actually get into a lifeboat until they are manually put into position by the crew. In events such as these, crew members will often be waiting by a muster station JUST in case evacuation is necessary.
i hate cruise directors like that, taking 2 million words to say something simple and sounding all sycophantic. "and a very good aaffternoon ladies and gentlement." just say: "there is a fire in the engine room. we are fighting it now. please do this and not that. we will now sound the general emergency alarm but there is no need to go to your muster station. we will announce it if so."
The Captain says "a good afternoon..." First of all because he is English and here in England we use manners. Secondly he says this to assure passengers there is no need for alarm and that is further reinforced by the fact he has the time to say this in a calm relaxed manner - in other words, it makes it more of a personal and relaxed announcement.
