Carol Ann Duffy, the author of acclaimed poems such as Havisham and Medusa, imparts her take on writing about the natural world in this excerpt of her upcoming BBC Maestro course on writing poetry.
She suggests that poetry’s power comes from naming what is around us, and that when talking about the natural world today, the strength of the words will come from bringing the harsh truths to the paper in front of you.
Learn how to approach delicate and complex subjects to create powerful, timeless poetry, with Carol Ann Duffy's course on Poetry Writing, coming soon to BBC Maestro.

Long ago I composed and performed music. Now I write poetry. As Duffy says - it is a language of love. I experience it as a language of heightened perception expressed as a love of the world - especially Nature. Sometimes I feel as if I'm living out of time - that I should have been walking the wild English or Irish countryside with Emily Brontë, Yeats or other Romantics because that's how Nature reveals itself to me as I shape my perceptions down into words. I wish we had the same sophistication and love of poetry in South Africa as do the British. Publishing and other supportive platforms for poets are almost non-existent here. So like the 2 Emilys - Brontë and Dickinson I write for the love of it and forget about it. After all that's what poetry is all about.

Tell me which quadrant in GB counts as normalized? Soho? Westminster? Bletchley Park? Furthermore I'm a huge fan of Anglo-indian cuisine. Though that comes second after traditional indian, which can be found in Fiji and Malaysia and could be found on Manners St. over here at some stage. Oh, the good old days.
