Did anyone notice how Carol beams when she looks off to the side toward Vicki after her introduction? There's genuine pride and excitement in her face, and it just reinforces what a supportive person she is.
Carol Burnett always said that Viki Lawrence was like a baby sister to her. In my opinion the whole cast was like a big happy family and I truly enjoyed watching the show as I was growing up.
Carol has always been like that...Vicky Lawrence even acknowledge that Carol was always on her side and proud of her and opened up opportunities even when Vicky didn't understand what she was doing.
I attended Vicki Lawrence's Q&A and she told the story of how Carol and she met. Vicki happened to write her a fan letter including a picture of herself and told her about s contest/pageant she was in. Carol went to it and essentially told Vicki she wanted to meet up with her later to talk about her career. They have such a beautiful and supportive relationship. Carol definitely took her in and jumpstarted Vicki's career!
It sounds like she is singing along to her own audio track cuz you can hear a little doubling in the voice... No matter though. An absolutely incredible song and well one performance. Great job Vicki Lawrence!
I was ten years old when this song came out in '73 and AM Radio was King and for whatever reason it always gave me the chills back then and even to this day... 👀 Spooky
Of course it did. This was a song of reality for many people, especially in the south. The thing that they don't talk much about during the MLK marches, is that some people who got arrested by authorities, when family came to see their loved ones at the county jail. There was no record of them being arrested. Nor were they ever seen again.
I heard Vicki sing this live at the IP Casino in Biloxi last night. She is comedic gold, and I had no idea of the story behind this song. Very funny and gifted lady and the world is better for having her. Thanks Vicki
I’ve been trying to find that, too! Stinks! I really hope somebody posts that also, of Carol Burnett surprising Vicki L. with the Gold Record someday. 👏🏼 🙏🏼 🌟 🏆 ❤ BRAVA, Vicki Lawrence - & major bravos to her ex-husband, Bobby Russell, for writing such a magnificent song! ❤
Actually it was circumstances that were out of her control. Around the time her song was released in 1973, Vicki's original label Bell Records (which was at the time owned by Columbia Pictures) underwent a major managerial shakeup with Larry Uttall, the head of the label, leaving. They replaced Uttall with Clive Davis, who formerly headed CBS/Columbia Records. Davis then underwent a major housecleaning with the label, letting go artists such as Tony Orlando and Dawn and Vicki, but retaining Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester and Bay City Rollers. In late 1974, Davis relaunched Bell under a new name: Arista Records. It was also around that time Vicki divorced Bobby Russell (who penned her song) and married Carol Burnett Show's makeup artist Al Schulz.
I know the Reba version and I knew it was a remake but I didn’t realize it was Vicki Lawrence who sang the original. I love her but I didn’t even knew she was a recording artist.
I have come across this kind of thing a lot. The other one that comes to mind how how many people don't realise that Whitney Houston's I will always love you is a cover of Dolly Parton's way of firing her manager in the 1973.
I once asked my mother if Vicki Lawrence performed this song on The Carol Burnett Show, to which confirmed she did and she remembers watching it. To finally see this clip is quite a treat. Don't know where this episode was shown, but THANK YOU so much for giving me the opportunity to finally see it.
After 30 years of begging Carol Burnett to release this to home video my last hope was that some angel would record this from the Museum of TV and Radio. That angel came through for me. Thank you so much for making my dream come true.
I've always liked this song, and never thought much more about it. Then about 10 years ago, it was playing and i saw on my display the artist was Vicki Lawrence (which I knew but never connected). Lights finally went off in my head and I thought, "no, couldn't be THAT Vicki Lawrence!" Googled it and sure enough it was. Sometimes the simplest things just slip past you.
I turn 60 in a few weeks and I remember watching The Carol Burnett show when Vicki Lawrence sang this song like it was yesterday. From then until now those good old days are all over.
I remember when it was on the radio in 1973. The song always reminded me of my Uncle Andy. They said he carried a gun, and he wanted to shoot his son in law!
Always loved this song but this video really hit me. 1. How beautiful and talented Vicki is. 2. That subtle mood change and look on her face while singing the last verse. The song and her face reveal at the same time; “I’m the evil little sister…”
Also, if you notice the camera work and how the shadow of the tree was shown against the back of the stage?? Maybe I'm ready too much into it but it looks like a hanging tree😒....very subtle.
I remember this song when it was a hit! I did watch the "Carol Burnett Show" sometimes, but never saw this performance by Vicki Lawrence. The song still gives me chills. Thanks for posting.
I had a 45 of this with a chip out of the lead-in area, right up to but not including the grooves containing the song: to play it from the very beginning involved waiting until the chip came under the tonearm, then dropping the needle right onto the first beat of the song. I got good at it.
I had no idea Vicki Lawrence sang this song period back then we didn't know who sang what's song unless we listen to Casey Kasem. We didn't have the internet so we didn't know much !!!
Oh my gosh I love this I played that record till it was worn I called the radio station asking them to play it I remember watching this and loving her performance oh my goodness gracious seems like a lifetime ago
They must of had different 45's made. My neighbor bought the 45 record, the flip side was a song called, "He Did It With Me" I remember as kids we looked at each other and started laughing. LOL
@@billaccord717 "Dime a Dance" was on the Original released copy. "He did with me" was the oldie copy that would put the songs follow-up single on the fiip
I remember this episode. First offered to Cher, who turned it down. The song was a big hit, but it took a while and a few plays for some people to understand what the song was about.
Is it my imagination or can Carol pass as a sister of Molly Ringwald? Besides the same coloring, she has some of the same facial characteristics of Mr, especially when Molly was in "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles".
This is available on one of the Carol Burnett boxed sets... I can't recall which one since I have bought them all hoping for shows I didn't already have!
Finally get to see this after seeing when I watched the show. That said, I always thought she was sitting on a staircase singing this. I’ll take it anyway.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've been looking for this for years. I remember it just like it was yesterday. If I'm not mistaken, Carol even presented Vicki with a gold record, but I'm not sure if it was on this episode or not.
The sisters brother plead guilty to protect her..and he was hung for the crime a innocent man until the sister heard the spirit of her dead brother say you need to clear your gulit and she confessed to the 40 yr old murder of Andy and her brothers wife.
The wife was going to be found out eventually for cheating on her brother. She shot the wife for hurting her brother, but ended up hurting him worse than she could have ever imagined.
She shot the wife who was cheating and that guilt she had was finally cleared when from the grave her executed brother told her to clear her guilt and the heavy burden was lifted when she confessed to the 40 yr old cold case murder.
She shot the SIL because she had been cheating on the sister's brother with Andy. The brother took the fall for the murders and now she is confessing to her role in it years later. I also believed that the sister shot Andy as well because the sister was in a relationship with Andy, and in a fit of rage, shot both of them when she saw them together.
The late Bobby Russell wrote & sang "Saturday Morning Confusion" in October of 1971 that went to # 28 (Billboard Top 40). Also Carol Burnett sang that song with the late Bing Crosby.
This song was #1 on the charts when I Iwas a kid. It scared me because in the south this was a real reality. That's why other artist refused to sing this song before it was offered to Vickie
Never knew she even song . Had no clue she sang the first. Wasn't until a few years ago when Reba mentioned how she loved Vicki's version. Off to Google and found that she sings and was her song first.
Nice to see the original as aired on Carol Burnett. I wanted to re-watch the clip of Vicki and Reba singing it together, but I can't find it so I guess it's not available anymore. :(
Glad to finally see this performance. BUT, the staging is TERRIBLE. She should have been given close-ups and medium shots, instead of the camera aimlessly wandering across the stage. By the way, I have always wondered about the lyrics. Andy's sister was the killer? Why did she kill?
The sister who did the shooting carried the guilt for 40 yrs until she heard her dead brothers voice from the grave to clear the guilt she had and she confessed to the shooting of Andy and his brothers wife.
