A great Italian American beauty, superb singer in two registers (pop and classic), distinguished actress and of course premiere dancer. Always polished and somewhat an enigma publicly, in life a total realist. When she wrote her own story, she turned not out not a lovely show biz bio but an honest, look-life-in-the-eye look back which revealed just what a tough road she'd traveled with grace and dignity.
This Bell Telephone Hour DVD sharply accentuates the dancing and singing talents of this wonderfully talented woman. I highly recommend it. No fluff here, it's a solid compilation of her appearances on the program.
@GDM34000 she was the originial Maria on Broadway in West Side Story, and was married to Robert Goulet... she is a very accomplished dancer, singer, and actress.
Amazing! Both her voice & the fact that I have NEVER heard of her!! (So have just Googled to see who/what she is/was.) I love films et al, & am even currently reading Marni Nixon's auto-bio, so I though I knew much re Who's-Who in Musicals/Hollywood/et al. [.../cont.]
[cont./...] What a perfect voice - rich yet light. Such a shame she didn't do the Natalie Wood role in the film of 'West Side Story' (much though I like Marni Nixon!). What is it with Hollywood, & their insistence on the film's lead being a current-film-star?! They did the same thing to Julie Andrews & 'My Fair Lady'!
And with also Barbara Cook in The Music Man Carol Channing in Hello Dolly Ethel Merman in Gypsy and Angela Lansbury in Mame all the original Broadway artists who like Carol Lawrence in WSS and Julie Andrews in both MFL and Camelot would have been better in the movies.
Carol Lawrence was another victim of the stupidity of the movie producers. She and Larry Kert lost their Maria and Tony in West Side Story for non singers Nathalie Wood(dubbed by Marni Nixon) and Richard Beymer(dubbed by Jim Pryant). They did the same with Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady,Barbara Cook in The Music Man, Angela Lansbury in Mame,Carol Channing in Hello Dolly,Richard Burton,Robert Goulet and Dame Julie in Camelot(although in this case Dame Julie didnt want to do the film because they didnt want to wait for Burton, who was making another film and they didnt want Goulet. So she didnt want to make the film without them) etc. There were many great talents that didnbt make the films and we couldnt see their talents.Thank you from The Bell Telephone Hour that we can see some things like this and also the Tonight duet between Carol and Larry Kert.
1) The name is "Bryant," not "Pryant." 2) Julie Andrews was not in the film "My Fair Lady." It was Audrey Hepburn who Ms. Nixon dubbed in that film. 3) Carol Channing was not in the film "Hello Dolly." The film role was played by Barbra Streisand, and she did her own singing.
@@arthurharrison1345 You didnt understand what I wrote..I said that they did with Carol in WSS the same they did with Julie Andrews in MFL Carol Channing in Hello Dolly and with Barbara Cook in The Music Man they didnt let make the movies and put Audrey Hepburn and Natalie Wood that they were dubbed.by Marni Nixon. i didnt name Barbra Streisand who of course sang her songs in Hello Dolly.Read with attention
@kgarmaker123 Yeah, then the times changed, they divorced, she didn't get any more jobs (there wasn't any for her kind of talent) and she became "ultra" religious in her later years singing christian music; guess the only recourse outside of Vegas and Vegas didn't want her either. Shame, I liked her.
