Ščedryk (in Ukrainian Щедрик?, literally Evening of Plenty) is a Ukrainian song composed in 1916 by Mykola Leontovyč. The piece tells the story of a swallow who flies through the center of a neighborhood to announce that next spring is coming. The song is usually performed on the night of January 13 of the Gregorian calendar, which for the Julian calendar is December 31, when the "Afternoon of Generosity" is celebrated. The first interpretations were made by students of Kiev University. Years later, the Ukrainian-American composer Peter Wilhousky adapted the theme to English under the title Carol of the Bells, which was performed on October 5, 1921 by the National Choir of Ukraine at Carnegie Hall. In 1936 he acquired the rights to the song, adapting the lyrics into a more Christmassy context than the original. In the United States it is considered one of the most popular of the time.

Damn I want that bass! It's beautiful, I dig the painting, and I play five string. I first heard the original song - so to speak - on Savatage's "Dead Winter Dead" album, then saw TSO's music video for it. Then I figured out that Savatage became the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and have stuck with TSO ever since. Liliac covering Savatage's "Gutter Ballet" would be awesome!
