"Carol of the Bells" is a popular Christmas carol composed in the Russian Empire in 1914, by the composer Mykola Leontovych, with lyrics by Pyotr Vilhousky. The song is based on a Ukrainian folk chant called "Shchedryk", which means "generous" in Ukrainian and Russian. I hope you enjoy this beautiful unusual version.

@@m4thew22 I was wrong with the date for some years, it is was written in 1916, a year after before Ukraine got rid of the Moskow occupation for a several years. This was written in the time under of occupation ukrainians by russians, on ukrainian language, by ukrainian composer and conductor Mykola Leontovych, who then toured Europe and the USA with choir and everywhere presented this and other songs preciesly as Ukrainian. For which he was killed by Chekist in 1921. Why do the russians not like it and run around in the comments and spread lies about the "soviet song"? The question is rhetorical. Your answer clearly shows that i was right about imperialism of russians. For those who still think that "its putins war" now.

I got here based on an Ebook I was reading. "Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan." By Clemet A. Miles 1912. The book sighted the song being based on a folk song. In English it is called "Swallow". I lost my page. It also said it was a New Years song traditionally sung in April prior to Christian conversion. Was said to be a chant with mystical properties. Had no idea it was the basis for "Choir of the Bells." Pretty cool.

Stop making a war of political commentators between us Russians and foreigners, although this song is considered Ukrainian, it was written during the Russian Empire sometime in 1914, the Ukrainian language then appeared recently (in the Russian Empire it appeared in the early 20th century). Just consider this song Ukrainian, but written in the Russian Empire. And moreover, the song itself was not written for a quarrel between foreigners in the comments, but to celebrate Christmas.
