Please join me in this video, Carol White - The Battersea Bardot - Kitchen Sink Drama to Hollywood!
Carol White was a British Actress who took the 1960s by storm! Starring in a string of movies with some of the biggest A-listers of the decade, including Richard Widmark, Gregory Peck, Sir John Mills, and Richard Todd to name but a few.
Carol White was born in London and even though Hollywood was calling, she never truly took her heart with her - it always remained in London. Beginning her career as a child star, Carol White grew into a glittering glamour girl of the swinging sixties, discarding the image only for her kitchen sink dramas such as the 1966 film ‘Cathy Come Home’ which brought her fame, success, and great acclaim along with the title ‘Most Promising Star of 1967’
Gleefully accepting everything the sixties had to offer, Carol White lived an indulgent life of excess which included a string of famous lovers, broken marriages, and dependence on all the things that would eventually bring her to a tragic end at a young age, leaving behind two sons.
Please join me as we remember the life and times of the Battersea Bardot, and take flowers to her final resting place at Mortlake Cemetery - as reminiscent of her most famous role, Carol came home to the place she loved so much. Her ashes are now interred with her parents and other family members, although sadly Carol has no headstone.
If you are interested in reading more about Carol White - her autobiography ‘Carol Comes Home’ is occasionally available on Amazon and other second-hand book sites. Although it is expensive and relatively rare - however, it’s worth searching out as it’s a great read!

I never met Carol but my Dad and brother did. Her brother Barry used to own our local pub The Tite Inn in the village of Chadlington Oxfordshire in the 1970s. Carol used to come to visit now and again. My Dad told me what a lovely person she was but she was very troubled. I was just that little bit too young to go to pub then unfortunately. But from what I have seen of her she was a great actress. Why is it the good ones lives end so tragically.

Thank you, This one brought mixed memories for me ,As a child our family lived in Hammersmith, and my mates and I often took bits of lead, and stacks of old newspapars to Joe Whites ( Carol Whites dad.) He had a scrapyard in Great Church Lane Hammersmith,so we would lug our booty up to his place, and come away with about a Tanner (sixpence ) each, which payed our entrance to the Saturday Morning Pictures at the Gaumont Cinema ,Hammersmith. A little later I learned that a pal of mine, was attending Corona Academy ,a school for children intending to go into theatre ,He was always going on about a pretty girl he'd met there called Carol, I never did meet Carol, but one aternoon at my pals house the phone rang, and YES ! Carol White on the line, my friend allowed me a few polite words with her, then she said "would you like to speak to my sister Jane." , Yes says I,and so we had a little chat,and I found her really charming and polite,so much so. that I am pretty sure Jane White was probably the first girl I fell madly in love with,,,,,,, 'never met her either'.......Thank you for taking me back through 'the mists of time' Luvvly !!!!!!! Carol and Jane were child BEAUTIES,,,

She was a natural as well as beautiful actress, but very much a London girl, which is why I find it rather sad that she chose to be away from home so much in her career and personal life. For me, 'Cathy Come Home' was her greatest achievement and the subsequent (well deserved) recognition a double edged sword. At the risk of being glib, she probably ought to have followed the advice in the play's title more closely. But from a personal point of view, I still find her very watchable and admire what she achieved.
@BeautifulBadandBizarre
@BeautifulBadandBizarre Год назад
I think you’re right about Cathy Come Home! I think she had star dust in her eyes - a kid from the streets of London found herself in the glitz and glamour of both NYC & Hollywood - she couldn’t believe the luxury of it all - she, her husband and sons were staying in the very best hotels and it all went to her head! ❤️ which she completely admitted x

RU-vid recommended I watch your video about the arrogant and contemptuous Charles Hawtrey, and your reference to Carol White at the end encouraged me to watch more - along with your splendid presentation and research. A colleague of mine was close to Oliver Reed and he sometimes joined him and Carol on nights out. He revealed to me that she was wilder than Ollie, which is really saying something, and so it is no real surprise that she burned out early.

Dulcima was not a bit part. In fact, it is my opinion that although produced in a somewhat amateurish way, it was the best character part that John ever played. The copy I have was obtained by the net via Australia as it is hardly heard of elsewhere as it was a small budget film. Nevertheless, Carol's part ideally complimented John's. You should try and see it, I am sure you will agree.
@peterphosphate5436
@peterphosphate5436 Год назад
@@neilstone4226 I have seen the film twice and Carol White was the lead female actress with John Mills playing the stingy farmer and Carol the financially hard up housemaid. The film ends tragically for both characters. I liked John Mills portrayal as Micheal in David Leans film “Ryan’s Daughter” If I remember correctly John Mills won an Oscar for the role. For me that would be the best character part John Mills ever played but everyone have their own opinion.

Carol White indeed made a significant impact on screen, and "I'll Never Forget What'sis Name" is a great showcase of her talent. It's one of my most favourite films - I'm a massive fan of Oliver Reed too! The untimely passing of both Carol White and Oliver Reed was a loss to the world of cinema. This is a nice tribute to an icon of the British cinema. I first came across Carol White in 1971, where she was filming a now overlooked film: 'Made' with Roy Harper. It was being filmed on the old pier in Brighton and the story was about a girl who meets a rock Star and after a brief fling tries to followup the encounter. Harper wrote the song 'Valerie's people' about the fictional character in the film. She had a flat in Lambole Gardens in the 80's if I remember correctly: I met her at a party I was at with a friend, but sadly she was very much the worse for drink and came over as a rather tragic but undeniably enigmatic lady. I seem to remember Lindsay Anderson being there too, but I'm not sure if they ever worked together. I am so glad you made the film so that people can remember her. Rachel Roberts was another of our great actresses, now largely forgotten...

She reminds me of Julie Christie. The movie many mention here in the comments is Poor Cow. I think I'll watch it as my introduction to Carol as I love the English "kitchen sink" dramas of that period. I have a hard time believing Prince Charles ever snuck out to do anything at any time in his life. He just doesn't have it in him. His comments at receptions were always scripted for him in advance, so some courtier probably told him to whisper that into her ear hoping it would get out (it did) and make him seem less robotic (it didn't)

Hello Shar🙋‍♀️ Thank you for an interesting and informative video📹 I don’t remember the dramas 🎭 Carol White appeared in, but I do know that “Kathy Come Home” was a Play that had such an impact on British Society, it was talked about for years!! It also inspired the Charity “Crisis.” Controversial plays “Poor Cow” and Up the Junction” also tackled difficult subjects, and changed laws. Although Carol White appeared in some of the most influential Plays of the 20th Century, it is so sad there is not a grave stone or a memorial plaque. 🌷🌷🌷 As a matter of interest, Stephen Ward, of the Profumo affair, was cremated and buried at Mortlake.

Hi Alison! I hope you’re well - thank you so much for your comment - Timmy was well behaved at the end of the video 🤭 Yes! Cathy Come Home had a big impact on the way homelessness was perceived - Carol was in so many movies and I do think she has been more or less forgotten now - which is such a shame - although having said that - her book commands really high prices and I think it’s a bit of a collectors item now! Also I really do wish she had a memorial there - I think she deserves one! You’re spot on about Stephen Ward too!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Hello.Thank you so much for your great podcast series. I'm a stickler for the British golden oldies. Carol was such a great actress, wasn't she. Dulcima was such a wonderful film with Stuart Wilson & Sir John Mills co starring. I saw Zorba the Greek the other day online, because of Alan Bates. One of Bates' greatest performances was in a film called The Fixer, which is about a persecuted Russian jew, wrongly sent to prison for rape and theft. One of the most harrowing films I've ever seen. Bates' performance was so outstanding, he was actually nominated for an Oscar, which he should have won, but didn't. As on so many occasions, they got it very wrong. I strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. Carol White plays Bates' wife. She only has a cameo role, where she visits him in prison, but she is absolutely marvellous in it. Incidentally, The Fixer also stars the great Hugh Griffith, who, as I'm sure you know, plays the funny judge in Oliver. Thank you.
