Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song was inspired by Atlantic Records co-owner and producer Jerry Wexler. As recounted in his autobiography, Wexler, a student of African-American musical culture, had been mulling over the concept of the "natural man", when he drove by King on the streets of New York. He shouted out to her that he wanted a "natural woman" song for Aretha Franklin's next album. Song was written for Aretha & recorded in 1967 then 4 years later Carole records her version on Tapestry Album

I disagree. I am sorry you don’t feel emotion with Aretha. That is what she does best. That is what she is famous for. That is what she taught Whitney Houston and any singer that she has EVER mentored. Her emotion and her vocal ability and power is what make her the greatest female singer of all time ( with Etta James in my opinion). Carol conveys emotion and gives a lovely quirky and emotional performance, but these ladies are on two different lanes. Carol is more of a songwriter than a singer. We all need to know our lane in life. And we all know who the queen is. 👑

The most important female composer/songwriter of the twentieth century. She had an excellent singing voice, yet chose rather for most of her songs to be massive hits for other artists. The words of this may be credited to Gerry Goffin (by way of Jerry Wexler) but King’s influence is unmistakable.
