The soda sweetens the buttermilk and the soda requires an acid to leaven and the buttermilk provides that. The baking powder is a combination of baking soda and cream of tarter. The cream of tarter provides the acid to make the baking powder leaven. Love the science of baking!
This is what I was able to find out: The acid in buttermilk reacts with baking soda to help the batter rise, giving baked goods a light and fluffy texture. The acidic content as well as fat, helps to tenderize the gluten from the flour by breaking down the protein strands. This results in a softer, more tender baked good. Makes sense to me❣️
Dear Leslie, I thank you for another wonderful video. Praying for this emergency. We know that the Lord is in this situation and walks along side the person who is having the crisis. Also praying for Pastor Bryant for strength and guidance as he also comes along beside the family. Praying for his tooth too. Love and hugs from Iowa, which by the way has been the warmest so far this year with temperatures to be in the 40’s this week.
Having a sweet or treat for visitors when they dropped by was called hospitality! Growing up, we always had something... as did my grandmas and aunts... I still do, usually put if small batches in freezer that are easy to access, since there is only 2 of us now, and not many visitors here anymore!❤
I have one grandmother that done that put some kind of dessert and coffee and my other grandma would do it with soup and stews seem like back then they always had something Brewing on the stove I remember those days house always smells
Leslie, that cake looks so yummy. The icing is also yummy looking. I’ll have to make this one for sure. Hope Bryant is doing better and that he has relief from his broken tooth. I’ll keep him in my prayers.
The other day I was sharing one of your older videos with my daughter. We both thought your hair looked wonderful.. it was when you wore it shoulder length.. it was so feminine and flattering.
I guess I am still a kid at heart. When I bake a cake, no children around, I lick my beaters, and eat batter left in bowl. 😭😭😭😭 this cake looks so good and I am on a diet 😢
This looks amazing! My husband makes a cake called Kentucky sweet cake. It has buttermilk in it and you heat the butter, water and cocoa and add to the flour. And when the cake comes out you have the icing ready which is milk, butter heated in post and add to the confectionery sugar mix fast and pour on the hot cake. Oh my. I’d make that tonight but making a fresh apple cake because I have apples to use. If anyone is interested I can share the recipe!!
Happy Monday!!!!! Love a good chocolate cake.... We love you whether you say the wrong thing or not. You are human... Not like you don't do so many different things each day.... The batter is very creamy looking... That looks amazingly delicious.... God bless you both hope Bryant's dentist appointment went ok... I'm saying prayers to the emergency he was called off for .. have a good day . Love y'all... 🙏🙏❤️❤️
Mrs. John here. Sounds like hubby's in for a crown at dentist office. Been there, done that! Mine was from chomping down on a popcorn colonel. Such is life. This too shall pass!
My mom made that cake icing but she would add coco powder to it and we ate it on homemade chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious and amazing
Thanks for a wonderful cake recipe! I remember my Mother making this. One of our favorite! Need prayers for my family, my father is 95 and has been in hospital since January 10th. He is very weak. We're trying to make him comfortable. Thank you God is with us!
Oh my sweetness Leslie..this cake brought back so many memories. My mom made this cake and the icing was exactly the same one..she sprinkled pecans on top! Yummmm such sweet memories..keep sharing. Love it😇
Hi Leslie --- This cake looks amazing! I would suggest adding maple flavoring to this icing, then pour it on a Black Walnut Poundcake like you made in your last video. That would probably be delicious. Thanks for the recipes! May God bless you, your family, and your church family.
Leslie, I just read this online about adding baking soda to buttermilk: Buttermilk is acidic and baking soda is a base. Mix any acidic liquid with baking soda and you get an instantaneous reaction that produces CO2 gas, which causes the bubbles and foaming. This is how baking soda causes muffins and other baked goods to rise.May 23, 2017
I come for everything, especially the conversation. The baking soda keeps the buttermilk from being bitter or sour. It neutralizes it. We call that Amish brown butter icing, even though you didn’t brown the butter first. It browned anyway. It is good icing. We make it and love it. Great on molasses or applesauce cakes. Great video.
Awesome video, Leslie! Thank you for sharing this! Oh wow, Caroline’s Icing Cake looks amazing! I know that I would love that icing! Poor Pastor Bryant, I pray that his tooth feels better. That sounds so painful. You guys do so much to help other people! Prayers in Jesus’s Name for the situation with the emergency! I love you guys, God bless you all 🙏❤️🤗
Oh yum! That icing reminds me of my mom's homemade caramel icing. If you continue to cook that icing until it forms craters instead of bubbles it makes really awesome caramel too. I gotta say this one made me drool...Lol!
This cake looks amazing ! I was expecting chocolate frosting, but this looks great! I am keeping you all in my prayers. If it is ok to share, how is sweet Judah feeling?❤
I see someone else mentioned it too but you could add cocoa to the icing. The cake looks delicious. Talking about habits, my bad habits have bad habits so he shouldn't feel bad! My best friend & I were literally just talking about how many sticks of butter we will use on the bread I have rising! That's one of mine. 😂Good thing I'm going to the dentist before we come home to get into the bread tomorrow.
Hello Leslie your cake looks amazing thankyou for sharing I wish I had a piece lol your window looks great I love it And I wanted to tell you I love your sweatshirts that you wear they are so cute my prayers are with you have a good week God loves you and so do I🥰🙏🏻❤️
Hi Leslie...the icing you made today reminded me of one my grandma used to make. She was known for her angel food cakes and sometimes this is the icing she would put on. Also thanks for the great tipthe other day for spraying our baking pans...Mrs.Steve
Leslie, I have try over and over to make biscuits and they never turn out good. I was watching one of your videos this morning while I was getting ready for work and you made biscuits using the two ingredient biscuit recipe. I made them tonight and they turned out prefect! Thank you so much! I enjoy your videos and your sweet family!
When my husband quit smoking back in 1985 he started chewing tooth picks. The eventually he started chewing on the plastic hair picks that you use with brush curlers. He did that until he passed away back in November of 2017
Leslie your faucet was dripping.. haven’t made Devils food cake in a long time I just used to make it with regular buttercream frosting this looked so good I could eat that batter ..
According to Google: Thread Stage is a cooking term meaning that a sugar syrup being heated has reached 106 - 112 C (223 - 234 F.) It is a test of how hot a sugar syrup is, and of how much water is left in it. At this point of heating, the sugar concentration in the syrup is 80%.

That cake and icing looks amazing. Leslie I'm loving your hair. Did I miss something about a new hair style? Oh hope everything is good but will be praying for Bryant's emergency 🙏💖💖✨
i watched this video and loved it. i watch you every day but not on my computer so i never get to comment...HOWEVER...this is not why i am writing. i just got through watching your video from 2 years ago ( i think) and it was about reveling your newly remodeled kitchen. honey, i cried buckets of tears when you were talking about your family and Bryant's family. such sweet sweet memories,oh my stars! i occasionally watch your church service too.i am just in love with your whole family and thank God for bringing you all in my life..love you bunches ( i have a daughter named Leslie too )
An older relative of mine gave me a recipe for a dark chocolate cake years ago, and the recipe is almost identical to yours down to the use of cocoa powder. The one difference was that she instructed me to heat the water, just like you would for blooming yeast when making bread, then add the cocoa powder to the very warm/hot water and mix to dissolve. She was convinced that this made for a richer chocolate taste, but I have never made it any other way so do not know whether it makes any kind of difference. I have been following this recipe for over 50 years.
Hi. Leslie, hope Bryant does well with his tooth-OUCH!! Keeping the situation in my prayers and for your family as well. I was really expecting a chocolate frosting on this cake but this looks amazing- YUM!! Love the sweet stories you always share about your family or the memories from your family while growing up. I would like to make a request if I may. Could you possibly bake one of your top five cakes maybe once a month or so, or more often( cake is my favorite dessert!!). Also, can you tell me where you got your big batter bowl from. I would love to have one that size. Sending prayers and love! ❤️🙏🥰🍰🥰🙏❤️
Hi Leslie and Bryant..I am fairly new to your channel and I absolutely love it. I am very careful in what channels I subscribe to. I don't do Facebook or any other social media besides RU-vid and Pinterest. You have me lol because you are so humble and honest. You share your kitchen and your hearts and love Jesus most of all. I hope to stay in touch and I do share your channel. Catching up on your past videos but it will take awhile. Lol. Keep smiling..keep praising and sharing Jesus..God's richest Blessings to you and yours. Blessings Linda from Michigan 😇😇
I don’t think people visit like they used to do since COVID. I usually keep a dessert fixed or ingredients for a fast one if someone comes. My husband’s and my waistline has paid for it!😂I wonder what that icing would taste like on a yellow or white cake where it would be the star of the show? Have you tried it that way?❤
