Caroline Vassa Hayden (1866-1950)
Also known as: Carrie V. Hayden, C.V. Hayden, Caroline Vassa Hayden/Stearns. Caroline was an American artist, poet and composer. She lived and worked in Boston. She was the daughter of the prolific composer Winslow Lewis Hayden (1839-1886). Caroline had three younger brothers
and a sister. In 1888 she married John Prentiss Stearns. They had two children. Exhibitions of her work in portrait painting have been shown in Weatherspoon Gallery (nowadays Weatherspoon Art Museum). National magazines have published her poems and her musical compositions have been accepted by publishing houses. The earliest C. V. Hayden piece published was in the 1st edition (July 1908) of The Crescendo, a monthly publication devoted to the interest of the mandolin, guitar and banjo. Her composition 'Reverie' was published in The Crescendo, June 1909, Vol.1, No. 12. Other works she composed for guitar: Cambridge Gavotte, Constellation March,
The Darkies Dance, Delight Polka, Elfin Gavotte, Elsie Mazurka, Gavotte
My Love, Happy Heart Polka, Happy Memories Waltz, In Dreamland Waltzes, Maidella Waltz, March Brillant, Romance of Venice, That is Love, Unique Gavotte, Waltz Gayety.
